Fat Busting - Dodge log
-
I'm three days into a bender (I'd been drinking for several hours before yesterdays posts, ditto todays), I'm out at the comedy store tomorrow night and at the cricket with a client on Friday. So 13 stone 8 is looking closer all the time...Hooroo, lets get out on the bloody golf course.
-
Dodge - shoulders suck. Hundred years ago when playing rugby dislocatd one. Was back to bench pressing the BAR only, and had to work my way back up to decent weights. Took 6 months of lifting like a bloody back before the strength / stability was back. Even today though, when benching, my left arm will lock out about 2 inches after the right.
-
it's the worst injury I've ever had because I don't know how to carry on training without it, I'm a swimmer not a runner, so immediately that went. I was a kayak instructor, now I can't lift my left arm above my shoulder line. Having been back in the gym for a week or so, I don't know how to get round it - tonight I had a massage in a pub and i was almost in tears with how painful my left shoulder was when she leaned on it. it's going to be a bit at a time, lifting a bit more every time, using dumbells to do every exercise makes you realise how limited you are on one side. In the next 6 months I'll balance the bastards up, i just wish I wasn't starting from scratch again
Yes lets. Any Sunday preferably, due to cricket -
Right I've successfully got back to 12 stone 10lbs without going anywhere near a gym, I'm smoking too much, drinking too much and eating crap. Therefore I now rejoin fatbusters, this time to take it seriously. My shoulder is still fucked, been going to physio but nothing she gives me to do seems to make any difference, she told me not to swim, so I'm going to ignore that as well.

Smoothie for breakfast, gym tonight. Will report tomorrow. -
ok second gym visit today, got on the rowing machine for the first time in a while, 8min on the dot for 2000m, shameful, but at least I've started - few more sessions and I'll start posting on the Concept2 board. 20 mins on the bike, 2km run, followed by 40 casual lengths in the pool as a warm down. Feel very virtuous, although I'm still gonna have to shake the smokes and the booze.
-
that is not sahmeful Dodge - 2:00 / 500m is what I would call my 'standard' pace. Anything slower than that, bad, anything faster, good. Mainly use that pace though as it is easy to do figures with in your head as you are rowing - if you do 1000m in 3:45, you can say to yourself you are 15 seconds ahead of pace (my rower a C model that has no pace boat). I do lots of shit like that when rowing!!

But throw those times straight onto the board, lets get it packed. -
Legs were a bit stiff today, didn't want to ruin them by running or rowing, so got in the pool and went for it, first serious swim in months, swam 1km in 18 minutes and probably could have gone quicker, was gobsmacked. Pretty chuffed with that. Then still had enough energy to sprint 5 sets of 80m.

feel great today, feels so good to be back doing something, have to keep it going now. Can't train tomorrow, so for the first time in years I will go to the gym on a Saturday. (thanks to Hooroo for being such a pussy he backed out of meeting for a beer tonight and allowing me to go to the gym instead, Hooroo of course was worried I would drink him under the table and kick his arse at pool...again...) -
had a warm up row, did a few weights and then hit the pool, forgot the bloody goggles, did 20 lengths, couldn't see, eyes hurt like fuck, gave up, bit pissed off, didn't feel like a decent work out. Still, have rediscovered the needing to work out feeling.
-
been a quiet ten days exercise wise, played a few rounds of golf, couple of swims in crap hotel pools so don't really count. Best mate got married on Saturday, only just sobering up, been eating and drinking non stop since last Wednesday, I'm at 12 stone 12lbs, so need to take it a bit more seriously. I have however given up smoking, smoked a few ciggies on Sat night at the reception but otherwise didn't smoke for the 6 days prior to or the two days since, don't want to smoke. Gone from 30 a day to none and feel better already.
-
still haven't smoked, eating better, not drinking quite as much, but still struggling to find the committment to exercise. Because my work life is all over the place getting into an exercise routine is impossible, without a routine I'm fucked because I'm too lazy / not dedicated enough to go to the gym when i get home after 3 days away.

oh, and I've seen a guy about my shoulder, buggered rotator cuff apparently, probably needs an op. -
still refusing to have the op and have got back in the pool instead, seems to have settled it a bit. Am up at 13stone on the dot at the mo, haven't smoked this year, still drinking far too much though. Signed up for a health check at work today and they sent me a questionnaire to fill in before the session in April - I can't face telling them the truth about how much I drink so I'm going to have to cut it down before then.

Hate working out when there are other people in the gym / pool, just find it irritating to have my routine shaken even a little bit so only go to the gym / swimming during the day when everyone else is at work, rather than in the evening. Don't like not having a routine, can't be arsed to get into one - vicious circle. Still, I've decided I'll post in here every piece of exercise I do, see what happens. -
Just came looking for this as I knew I'd started one. Had shoulder surgery mid 2007 in the end, had a torn and stretched ligament holding the shoulder in which meant it was popping out all the time. Wasn't allowed to do any proper exercise for 6 months after the surgery so I didn't. Bought a bike but never did much other than social rides, was doing bits and bobs of exercise, footie here, swimming there, cycling there, then slipped a disc skydiving summer 2008, it seems I'm just too old to have much fun anymore. Gave up smoking 1st Jan 2009, was finally able to start playing 5 a side football again mid 2009, trouble is by then my weight had increased up to nearly 14 stone and having not had an event to train for I've been down from it and back towards it ever since. Have to lose some weight this year as am getting married in May (you're all invited) and a. I don't want to look a fat bastard in my wedding photos and b. I miss being built like I meant it.

So, end result is that I realised I had to do something different, can't be arsed with the gym to lift weights to be honest, wanted to be fit again and hate running, so knew I didn't have the dedication at this stage to do a triathlon, remembered I love swimming when I can find the right pool at the right time so found the Great London Swim and have entered it. Its pretty straight forward, I have to swim a mile in a London dock on the 3rd of July, that's it. I have roped a couple of mates in who I have a healthy level of competition with, have discovered that I can get to Crystal Palace fairly quickly to swim in the Olympic size pool and that its quite empty at certain times. Went for the first time last week, nearly died, even 50m felt like a long way! Have been 3 times now, swam 1km today off the bat today, pretty slowly (haven't starting timing yet) but felt better than after the first time's debacle.

Am aiming to swim the mile in under 30 minutes which a while back would have been pretty straightforwad but am not sure I'll be able to train enough to get back to that shape and am trying to stay realistic all the way through this otherwise I'll just get down on myself for being shit! So, long and short of it is that I'll record progress here but would welcome any training tips from any swimmers on here and I remember there were a few. -
Congrats on the engagement. As for the weight loss, why don't you just go to India again and spend a week on the toilet with your head in the sink. You lost heaps doing that last time <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

good work mate. Just continue to increase your distance/intensity over time and you'll be the frigging man from atlantis! How does your shoulder feel during/after a swim? holding up ok. Congrats on the engagement too, from exp I know its a HUGE motivator to get into a shape other than round!
-
swam again today, shoulder is holding up ok although had to have a severe deep tissue massage the other day to free it up after the first couple of visits, it was so tight I couldn't sleep. Having a few issues with asthma which I haven't had since I was a kid whilst in the pool - bit scary tbh but I'm sure it'll come good, might have to get myself an inhaler again.

Other than that it already feels pretty natural being back in the water again, swam some 100m sprints with 30 seconds rest between them today to see how my speed was and it was ok but towards the end it nearly killed me.
