Not really. Based on 2014 figures (annual and other financial reports), the top 10 oil companies in the world alone had combined revenues of around $3 trillion. -

It still seems very high. And a lot of this revenue would not come from oil sales

But the other thing is oil is not only used for energy. The majority (70%) is used for other products like plastics, color, furnishings, cars toys etc. So it will still will be mined and sold even if it wasn't used for energy. For eg if a cheap almost free energy source was discovered and put into production.
-

I think you may have missed the point Winger. It was actually about the perceived vs actual power of Monsanto in comparison to the oil companies.

For some reason many people attribute to Monsanto, which is not a huge company by global standards (they're almost exactly the same size as Caterpillar), the ability to influence lawmakers and scientists all over the world which is out of all proportion to its means. The implication is that they wield their extraordinary power for nefarious purposes at the expense of small farmers and the public.

I imagine the comparison to the oil companies is because it seems ironic that a upper-medium sized company with pockets that aren't all that deep has (allegedly) been able to influence all these politicians to turn a blind eye to their actions, and scientists to underplay the dangers of GM. Meanwhile the oil industry, which is by some way the richest industry on the planet, can't seem to convince the same politicians and scientists to do the same with respect to climate change.
