Gets an awful lot of shit, but he is in a ton of movies i like
Deepwater Horizon
Lone Survivor
Pain & Gain
The Fighter
The Other Guys
Shooter
The Departed
Invincible
Four Brothers
The Perfect Storm
Three Kings
The Big HitThat's not a bad career.
now imagine all those with someone whose range extends beyond looking surprised all the time.
Don't need a lot of range for the characters he plays. Being an everyman, boofhead type works for him.
Like the literature professor in The Gambler?
I've seen worse actors.
So have I, but I don't expect much from a school revue.
Parts like direct him back to what he does well.
Remember, if it was easy as everyone thinks, then everybody would be doing it.

Marky Mark was brilliant in The Departed.
Yes he was good in that. It had a brilliant cast.

Supply vs demand.

@antipodean There are 100 much cheaper Marky Marks that would use instead if it was easy. He may not be your cup of tea (he's not mine either), but he's competent at what he does.
A very narrow range.

I heard something similar on a podcast about George Clooney. Basically he doesn’t have much of a range so he just picks roles within what he can do . The studios know that and fans will come to see him be a variation of basically what he usually plays.
Sells his part in Return of the Killer tomatoes a bit short but it’s otherwise fair .

I think most actors have a type, which is similar to their own personality.

True , then occasionally you get someone like Billy Bob Thornton .

Big Mark Wahlberg fan.
For those saying he doesn't have range
Ted, The Fighter, The Departed, Boogie Nights
Tell 'em they're dreaming.

A lot of big name actors are like that and for some reason because they're associated with successful movies, they're seen as bankable stars. So they keep getting gigs.
Philip Seymour Hoffman could act. As in genuinely different characters. Same with Gary Oldman (until he no longer cared and started ringing it in). Obviously DDL. Robin Williams could, etc.
Perhaps there are others who could but were typecast. But it's hard to watch a modern movie with Pacino or De Niro these days without wondering if you haven't seen this movie before.
I used to think Tom Cruise couldn't act, and then I saw Collateral.

I wonder if he did Scientology auditor Tom Cruise in that movie?

I thought Whalberg showed he had the range to do comedy when he said that he would've stopped 9/11 if he'd been on the planes.
Wouldn't have had to be on ALL the planes? Now that's range.

Not for me, he was always just Philip Seymour Hoffman in every role he played (to me). The love for him as an actor always bemuses me, DDL I can understand because I think he was a truly great actor pre Gangs.

Really? Boogie Nights, Capote, Charlie Wilsons War for example.

@antipodean no love for Tropic Thunder?

Great movie. I'm still embarrassed to admit I didn't even identify Cruise until well into the flick

Tom's Les Grossman turn stole the show. Robert Downey Junior was brilliant too.

Think it took me a while of thinking "man that guy's familiar". Then...
Ohhhh....I know who that is.
