@Nepia was good in Hurt Locker

    massively overrated movie

Agree, Zero Dark Thirty from same director was a much better movie, and more deserving of an Oscar.

@taniwharugby People seem to rate him due to Hurt Locker, I'm not convinced. I actually thought he wasn't too bad in Wind River, which is another overrated movie.

A big movie can often hype an actor and they do little of note after that. @voodoo mentioned Edward Norton but he's done SFA since Fight Club and American History X.

@taniwharugby But still from the 1990s.

I don't even remember his character in Birdman but he got a nomination. 🤣

I think Norton has preferred to be a character actor on screen than try to be a leading man and do theatre.

Coincidentally, the last movie I watched with him in also starred Renner, The Bourne Legacy.

He was the First big Hulk too but walked away from that. I'm glad too as I really like the guy who plays Bruce Banner now.

    Taken.

When it’s on, you watch it.

    The Great Outdoors (1988)

Dan Ackroyd, John Candy, Annette Benning (was pretty sexy in her day!)

This was a cool era for films, so simple, not pretending to be anything and just a bit of fun.

3 talking racoons out of 5 96 ounce steaks

Also rewatched Second Hand Lions: Robert Duvall, Michael Caine, Haley Joel Osmant

    I really like this one!

4 bar fights out of 5 travelling salesmen

    Next: PLanes, Trains and Automobiles

Lions was a bit of an under the radar hit. Great cast, good story and just hits the sweet spot with every shot.

    Spencer Confidential

Netflix movie in which Mahk Wahlberg is an ex-cop who tries to solve a dirty cop mystery. It's basically an action-comedy. It falls a little short. Plot is a paper-thin cliche. Some parts you know were in there as LOL moments but just aren't any more than mildly amusing. Alan Arkin is in it, and he's old.

It's in Boston, and the thickest accent is with Mahk's girlfriend. Who also has pretty great cleavage.

It would be an absolutely nothing movie without Mahk being Mahk. We've had the discussion on here before, but i like the bloke. He's pretty funny, and good at taking the piss out of himself. This character could be in any one of half a dozen of his movies. But swap him out for someone charismaless like Jeremy Renner and this movie is a 2.

3 lobstahs out of 5 oh gee i wonder who the dirty cop is.

He's a peacock, you've gotta let him fly.

A rewatch of Gladiator. I've always enjoyed the movie but I struggle to understand how Russell won the best actor for that performance.

Last night was The Big Lebowski. It's not my favourite Coen brothers movie but John Turturro and John Goodman are scene-stealers. The Dude, is well, the Dude.

It did poorly at the box office didn't it? A cult classic that has grown in stature over time

It looks like it did according to IMDb. But box office success does not always equal quality. The Shawshank Redemption bombed too.

I think it's all relative, at the time of its release it was the second most successful Coen Brothers film at the box office, Fargo was really their only box office success at that time.

So probably more an expectation of box office rather than its actual box office and if Fargo hadn't turned into an Oscar smash then The Big Lebowski may have taken less.

Coen movies are not always for mass appeal either. You would think Raising Arizona would have been popular at that time, and apart from Fargo, my personal favourite is Miller's Crossing.

I really didn't like the Coen's early movies, but I've liked most of their post 2000 ones. I reckon they've been slightly more mass appeal since No Country for Old Men.

Millers Crossing was one of my most disappointing movie watching experiences after watching the trailer. I should give it a rewatch some time.
