They cost too, beyond the infrastructure etc..
We have an IG that we got when we thought we would be dinks forever (i.e., had given up on having little gt12s) and it was great, although getting someone to watch the dog when we went away was a major hassle. Plus finding dog friendly places is a pain.
Since having our boy, it's very different. we are finding it really hard to balance getting the dog out enough and giving her enough exercise. I fight with my wife constantly about the fact that we are the only things she has in life, so we have to make time for her and make an effort to take her out, even though we have kid activities etc.
My boy loves her; she puts up with him as he drops food.
She also has two families (who babysit her when we are away) who like to take her for weekends occasionally, so it's still a worthwhile hassle, but it's a hassle.
So, if you think you can get a safe enough space with enough space at home, and there is enough time in the day for the dog to get some attention and be a real part of the family, then I'd say go for it.
However, given that I'm an IG guy, I'd also suggest looking into adopting a retired greyhound as another option ( see here or here or here. They need homes and are fun dogs; if we were in NZ with a big yard, that would be my choice. They'd be shit guard dogs, but they are generally quiet and like to sleep for about 22 hours a day, so if they get their 1 hour of play with the family each day, that should be enough to keep them happy and whatever life you gave them would likely be better than the one they are leaving.
By the way, bitches only.

@gt12 IG?
It took me a while but the ex racing dog mentions made me twig.
I was quite keen on an ex racer too. Have seen them as pets and they are very chilled loving dogs.
You do have to match your situation and your dog though and having lost two dogs in the last year was keen to have another long term member of the family.
We were lost without a dog in the house for 4 months. Thought we could last until spring and see if life without enabled some freedoms, but no.
Yes, sometimes it creates a bit of planning and expense when they can’t share what you are doing but IMO it is worth it. -

okay, so the family has worn me down to the point where i am considering getting a dog
And if i am getting a dog, i want a German Shepherd. Because they are boss as fuck.
Is this a fucking stupid idea? Anyone had one?
Shit, same! I really want a GS too! Though we won't be getting one until Dec/Jan.
I haven't seen many around Sydney and wondered if they didn't love the heat?
Such wicked animals
I think the long haired GS suffers a bit with heat. It can be very thick. Hips are sometimes a problem so if getting a pup do your due diligence on the parents and have the pup itself checked out properly.

Yeah, you’d think! Get a native breed. Maybe a dingo. You could call it, oh I don’t know... Deans?

dingo puppies are unreal cute. The two we have at one of our wildlife parks were beautiful. They are still not bad now.

but some of the stories you hear out of Fraser Island...

Time for a Chihuahua!
-
Bonesetta is on me to get a puppy, wants a bloody chocolate Dachshund. I'm saying no way as I would want something else and more importantly I think it would be a hassle for us at times. So I've said we either move to NZ or I retire, then we can get a dog of her choice.
Like the look of the IG thought...I once met a choxy that was bloody cool too.

If you like running, IGs are awesome. We used to get 4-5 kms in together every morning, then she'd sleep the rest of the day.
They are also funny as shit when they get zoomy, and they are quiet, don't shed much (basically nothing) and are super snuggly.
God I wish I'd had her when I was single... fuck me, not just a a set opener, they come to you 'Oh, you're dog is so cute'...
Zoomies look like this:

Did a short kayak excursion from Kingfisher 18 months ago. Guide, a reasonably solid bloke, was telling us a story how he was out walking one time and this big fuck-off alpha dingo chased him into the water and stalked him along the shore. Scary.
