At first I couldn't be bothered with the Tracer App but after a night in Auckland, it would be handy to have rather than having to sign in and out of bars and restaurants.
We had intended to go to Wellington for long weekend, but pulled pin on that this morning. Had we gone, I would have definitely got the app.

IOS and Android were updated today with their joint API to support contact tracing. So I guess since the app was already available, that means they aren’t using this API?
Hard pass from me then.
I'm no app developer but I really can't see why this tracing thing is so difficult when they aren't trying anything complicated or new.
Apps like Strava or Trailforks or Skitracks have become pretty battery efficient and something for this purpose only needs to ping a coordinate every 5 minutes or so. Elevation data can also be removed and speed calls aren't required. A stripped down GPS locator on your phone that stores data which automatically deletes after say 21 days would provide people with the ability to provide tracking data if they tested positive. Also, as per the proposed update to the current one, an file can be sent periodically to have cross checked against potential contact. It could be done anonymously as well. The current QR code thing is a mess.
I'd be happy to turn on my tracker when I leave home, let it store my data and periodically check against a contact list.
It’s not technically difficult, it’s difficult to do in a way that keeps data private and avoid being misused by governments.
More authoritarian governments would love an app that not only acts as an ID Card, but keeps track of everywhere you go, who you meet, or call, or email and throw in your search history and banking details for giggles.
Be like volunteering to wiretap yourself.
I’ve lost count of the number of apologies by Facebook, for example, “accidentally” grabbing more detail that they needed.
This is not a door we want opened, be impossible to close. It’s why Australia’s government’s war on math in trying to ban encryption (or impractically put in backdoors) is so dangerous. Also shows it can happen here.

I assume that limit also includes community sport? I might be able to get out on the field again.
Yup, so we are looking at having gaps between games, so you don't get cross over. But kids sport, incl parents/supporters, a go - as long as it does not add up to more than 100 at a time. Adults sport, the same, you've still got to contract trace everyone there, and make sure groups don't go over 100. I'm sure more guidance will come from SPort NZ etc soonish
-
@Machpants The contact tracing for my team will be my responsibility as the player/manager. We tend to have the same people watching most weeks, so as long as random strangers don't turn up it shouldn't be a major issue.

@Stargazer 22 active cases is another highlight of that!

And yet, L1 is a month away....
It all started from one person. We have to make sure that one person isn’t waiting to surprise us.
To be honest I’m not noticing a hell of a lot of difference to normal at the moment apart from closed borders and less flight options. -

To be honest I’m not noticing a hell of a lot of difference to normal at the moment apart from closed borders and less flight options. You may not have. But I've driven 1000kms in L2 conditions over the last 10 days, and I've seen:
- multiple cafes, bars, restaurants closed as it's apparently too hard to comply
- multiple tourist attractions closed - Waitomo Caves, Otorohanga Kiwi park, Rotorua zip-lining, Waiotapu pools for example
- cinemas closed, including all 3 Event Cinemas in Mount Mounganui (leaving zero alternative)
And you couldn't catch this thing if you tried
BUT - that's not even my point. I'm fine with continued distancing guidelines, whatever makes us feel safer. I just HATE this single rule for all. Why 10, why 100? Why not allow massive venues to take some responsibility, even if you impose massive penalties for non-compliance? Who says a funeral parlour that holds 500 normally cant hold 250 now? Why camt a stadium that typically holds 30,000, host a game with 5,000?
And most of all, why are we waiting a month for our masters to revisit these rules? Given their direct impact on the economy, why aren't they being assessed every couple of days?

Feels like business as usual. Sure there are changes at shops and I’m not trying to go to pubs or cinemas. But I also don’t feel that constrained.
I appreciate that others might though and some businesses still find it too difficult to operate. -

Aren’t they deliberately letting two full potential infection cycles play out?

Who knows? But even if they are, that doesn't answer any of my questions. 2 x infection cycles from some invented starting point really doesn't add any scientific chop here. They should be constantly evaluating, adjusting, expanding. And ideally, but perhaps impossibly, forcing businesses that can and should be operating under L2 conditions, to actually open.

Then we all realised how old we were sounding!

Yeah, it's a strong push, I totally see the other perspective - but the flipside, is why should they get the wage subsidy if they've made no attempt to open?
