I get that they can drive that distance on a tank of gas, my old holden can do so.
I get they can be prepared and have food and water for the trip so not having to stop.I don't get that there is one, let alone two women on this planet that can drive all that way with out having to go to the toilet..... twice!!
If it is proven that they stopped and went to the toilet in the forest or something then we don't have a lot to worry about (except the incompetence of letting them go in the first place)
I am very sceptical that they didn't use a public facility or a friends place on the way down.
First thing my wife said too. We are being lied to.
Is the family name Cummings?

@JC agree, but i do wonder how many layers exist between the PM and Bloomers and who is running the show on the ground.
Bloomfield's job then is to either cut through those layers, or to ensure competency throughout layers managing quarantine given he's their overall boss. There's no more acute health system issue at the moment, and yet Ministry of Health processes have more holes than the Titanic.

@Virgil I heard our glorious leader this morning. Tight lipped anger was how I would describe it. Not at all fluffy. More FFS you fluffybunnies this is the last thing I need right now.
It doesn't dispel the idea that she is surrounded by idiots. These are the tip of the iceberg, just the ones we get to hear about. I'm sure the reality is far more horrifying

@canefan lol so kind of like most workplaces then?
100%, and exactly why I get so worried about centralisation of power

so NZ now has to sit on tenterhooks for the next 14 or so days to find out how big of a fuck up this is, or as we all hope, just a massive lesson!

one assumes that over the past 3 months much has been done to make NZ more ready to handle a health emergency of this magnitude, and therefore any "outbreak" can now be handled much better, without the need to lock everyone in their homes again

You have more faith than I do.

@mariner4life thats the theory, still doesnt make thier monumental fuck up any easier to take.

i understand that, i guess my feelings, and posts, are based more on my position here
We still have new cases every day. But not many, and most are people coming back from overseas. Despite this, state borders remain closed, and there are no flights moving around the country.
yes, increased movement will probably involve some spread, that's inevitable. But, given the numbers we are dealing with, they should be able to be dealt with, especially because i know Aus has a better response ability now than it did in March.
This thing still exists, we have to get used to that. We can't isolate indefinitely.
-
@mariner4life no we cant, but these 2 should never have been in a position to spread it is the issue here, we had them in isolation.
-
Reading an article about this in the newspaper, the point was made that wearing face masks should be mandatory on all flights for any incoming international arrivals. That would be up to the airlines to enforce but would minimise the risk of infection during the flight and for all staff at the airport before isolation in NZ.

Does anyone have any faith in the Ministry of Health contact tracing system?
I've only been able to get the app to work on my work mobile. And in about three quarters of places I've been there's no QR code to scan. Shopping centres seem to be especially slack at having them anywhere.

I can get to Levin, maybe Waikanae, if not then Pram before I need to refill.
Otherwise it's white nuckle ride down for the last hour on the red line, probably doable, but stressful.
And unless you knew that road like the back of your hand I don't think you would chance not filling up. I've done the trip myself over a dozen times, been in the car with my folks countless more. I always stop once

I guess the theory is, they had a spare fuel can too...it sounds very unlikely, but surely they have been stressed to that lying puts so many lives and jobs in danger...just say we stopped here, was within 2m of the guy pwrking or whatever, means they can start the tracing process now rather than find out in 2 weeks they lied and by then the person/s they came in contact with have already been out in the community.

So now that I've had time to reflect on this, I'm even more angry at the government.
They took 100% of our rights away for more than a month while they implemented the most draconian lockdown in the world. We all went along with it for the greater good, and we got rid of Covid altogether.
And for what? If the virus spreads again, and based on what we are seeing it seems almost inevitable that it will, what then? We can't go back into lockdown. There was debate about whether the cure was worse than the disease with the first one, if we do it again that will almost certainly be the case.
So what was that lockdown for? What was their long term plan? Close the borders until an unlikely vaccine is created? But then if that was the plan, why are they granting exemptions when it only takes one person to spread it far and wide again?
Or are these politicians so hopelessly out of touch that they think they can just do the lockdown again if need be?
I don't see anything coherent around what our long term plan is for this.

I believe their plan is another lockdown, damn the consequences to the economy.
