well given she is going up against Cindy who is the kindness queen with the smile wider than her head...
It should be irrelevant, and I dont think it is anything to do with her sex, all about perception, if she never smiles or has her serious face on all the time, people arent going to warm to them as easily.
IMO of course.
Aunty Helen learned the hard way that you need to have a believable smile

I don't see any issue with talking about a smile, people about Trump and his smirking all the time. Not to mention his hair, his orange skin, his weight, his golf swing. Nobody calls that sexist?
Smiling, along with all other mannerisms form effective communication tools. Crucial for a politician.
Not withstanding the fact he's a colossal dickwad Trump is apparently allowed to be mocked cos he's white and successful whereas anything even remotely derogatory towards the other side is racist/homophobic/sexist/bigotted/transphobic/fat shaming/ageist etc.
The double standards are what I hate about the extreme left.

I don't think it's a left right thing. All people are judgemental about a person's appearance, just in different ways for men and women

Oh undoubtedly but it’s the extreme left that cry foul if someone makes an observation.

Most likely if it's a woman. Helen Clark used to get lots of shit for her appearance, she publicly used to ignore it. But I remember her losing her first election as opposition leader, next time she had upped her PR in the looks and demeanour department considerably

The old saying about polishing a turd comes to mind

Judith shows the other lot how to deal with a scandal. Woodhouse is demoted and Dr Shane Reti made Minister of Health within 15 hours of her assuming power
An intelligent appointment (who knows why he wasn't installed before), Dr Reti would appear to tick a lot of boxes

Don't recall anyone fapping on about Muller's smile. Or boy wonder Luxon, whoever he is.
I did see several comments about him being bald though. Sure the same will be true for Luxon. It is a distinct disadvantage neither can do a great deal about.
@dogmeat said in NZ Politics:
@Mokey Maggie Thatcher said she had to change her voice in order to win the leadership battle so I don't think the comments are that out of order.
And as we saw with Simon Bridges your cadence and accent is all a part of the package.

RNZ is reporting that Nikki Kaye will announce today that she is stepping down from politics and will not stand in Akl Central.
Man wouldn't mind having the National Party's signwriting contract.
Deputy Leader to gone in 72 hrs.
Sounds like Amy Adams will leave too

The 'experience' factor is boiling down to Crusher and Brownlee.
Brownlee IMO is one of those 'hangers on' that only appears to know about things through longevity. I do know that he isn't thought of very highly among those that have had to work under him as a minister.
I'm surprised that Crusher didn't pick someone with less baggage than Gerry. -
Nikki Kaye's statement is an obvious cover up too...
“I have spent most of my adult life serving the public and the National Party. This is personally the right time for me to leave. Cancer has taught me that life can change in a moment and I am ready for the next chapter,” Kaye said.
She said she was still set to get a senior role from Collins.
“I made the decision not to stand for Leader or Deputy on Monday and I offered my support to Judith prior to the caucus vote. While Judith made it clear to me that I would be part of her Senior leadership team and Education spokesperson, I am ready to retire.”
“I believe Judith is absolutely the right leader for the Party at this time and I will be supporting Judith and the Party to win this election. New Zealand needs National.”How can you go from 'keen as', and newly appointed deputy to 'this is the right time to go' if something hasn't changed drastically in your outlook.
She knows that she has played the game and lost. Simple as that. Destined to be a drone if she stays.

The 'experience' pitch has gone out the window. Not quite sure how National can make a strong case to having the personnel to do a much better job than Labour (apart from some of the nun-ties in Labour).
Collins, Brownlee and waaaay down the pecking order, Nick Smith are about the only publicly recognised names left.
When your numbers 1, 2 and 3 from the last shadow cabinet are gone it is a hard sell.
Saying that, one good topic left in the open for Crusher to attack on and the picture could change.
