Every time I come back to NZ, I visit an independent "record store" - and buy pretty much every NZ CD which came out since I was last in-country.
This time, I did a little research before hand (VERY little - I checked the NZ Music Awards shortlist)
On visiting the store - I find the two "top" artists of the year, didn't release on CD - only vinyl, with MP3 downloads included? An interesting way to go... but fuck, I need a job if I'm going to finally go into vinyl.
Anyway, some of the more notable artists of 2019...
Benee - yeah, probably not the cup-o-tea of the old-white-guys/hot-young-polish-girls here - but she's talented, catchy, modern
Avantdale Bowling Club - haven't heard much, but from what I have - although they were the top award winner - fairly bland NZ hip-hop
The Beths - seem to be a solid resurgence of the Flying Nun pedigree
Six60 - I've never bothered buying an album. From what I've heard - the blandest of bland "NZ BBQ dub"
Marlon Williams - good at what he does (crooning) - but not much to distinguish himself from the rest of the worldAll that said - as I say, I love to support and buy up NZ music when I'm home, so... - any suggestions I give any of the above another chance, or recommendations of other recent (or older) music - appreciated.

@MN5 Kimbra doesn’t get a enough love for being a hot chick.
Shit's fucked up.
Cos she has an amazing set of lungs.

My 3 favourite kiwi songs of all time are:

Shihad: For What You Burn
Split Enz: 6.months in a leaky boat

The Exponents may be many things, but
If someone says, " I don't know"
Someone else will say "o-o-o, why does.love, do this too me"
Fucking. Anthem

They have been responsible for some great music.
As a child of the 80s, who can forget the Mockers

Neil Finn is a total legend, he's written so many great songs. I'll pick two, message to my girl and Don't Dream its over. Timeless
Saw Neil & Tim performing at the Royal Albert Hall 2005. They did "Don't Dream it's Over" & "Charlie" with no amplification, just their voices, two guitars and one spotlight.
You genuinely couldn't hear a pin drop.

Really can't go past this.

I've seen Crowded House twice. They upstaged REM opening for them in the early 1990s at Western Springs, and the front row of the Dunedin Town Hall for the Woodface tour complete with Tim Finn. Brilliant

Since there seems to be some other non rock entries I'll add:
Juice and Cruise Control by Headless Chickens, these were huge in the early 90s.
Chains by DLT and Che Fu, good mid 90s NZ hip hop.
French Letter by Herbs, and of course E Papa by Herbs during the rugby.
E Ipo by Prince Tui Teka was huge at my parents parties when I was a kid.

Darcy Clay. He didn't do much, but shit - the crazy fuck had potential.
Really don't get the whole Darcy Clay thing, bought the EP (I think) due to the hype and thought meh.

Can confirm Jan is still HOF
To add to the hot chicks - Peking Man, Build a Room that Echoes with Margaret Ulrich.
