@Snowy not arguing white isn't better....just why does it have to be this muddy/cowshit green/white
Agreed. My first comment was "couldn't they have washed it?"
-
@KiwiMurph if they really want to see then they should do what most Highlanders fans (that's ive talked too) would prefer and that's an Maroon away jersey
-
@Kiwiwomble Agreed - though wasn't the whole shift to lime green a distinct move by Highlanders to try and separate them from Otago/Southland provincial rugby and make Highlanders their own entity?
-
@KiwiMurph from memory the first green jerseys we're supposed to be our home/main jersey for that reason....but they bailed from that idea pretty quick because the fans didn't want it
so if we're sticking with the Blue/gold of Otago as the home then....
-
must be January. The annual whinge about the jerseys is upon us.
no, i am not above it, so to get my GOM man on
fuuuuuck you adidas. There is one fucking game in NZ where a change jersey is required. And that's the Blues and the Highlanders. Because back in the day you fucked up and allowed both to be blue. Otherwise everyone can play in their normal jersey.
But nooooo. New jersey every year. eye sore "away" jerseys that have to be worn every 2nd week. All so you have more shit to sell to dickheads at outrageous prices.

I'm not sure why this jersey (or similar) wasn't used again?

'Coz then anybody who owned that already, wouldn't be in the market for the new one?
But in general - the idea of having all the away jerseys as close-to-white as possible was, IMO, a good idea. Minimise the wailing and gnashing of teeth from jersey-clashes.
Now... just issue the mandate that they're only worn when necessary, or maybe as a compromise - a minimum of once or twice in the season - but only after a bit of thought, not just for the hell of it. Against the Brumbies, for example. -
I've got no issue with 'home' and 'away' or clash jerseys. In fact, on another jersey thread last year I advocated for (in a normal, full length season) an NBA-style City (Region?) Edition jersey as well.
My rationale for the latter is that this gives adidas and the franchises the opportunity to trot out the more unusual jerseys: eg non-traditional colours and the kind of 'braided rivers' patterns they plastered on the abominable Crusaders away jersey last year. In a full regular season of say 15 games, they could wear this perhaps twice. The 2021 Highlanders away jersey could fit this category well if it turns out it's some kind of ode to hunting and the outdoors or something.
I don't see any reason whatsoever why the home and away jerseys can't be simple inverted colour schemes. Canterbury use a black jersey as an alternate, as should the Crusaders. The Blues could go with dark blue and light blue, Canes yellow or black, Highlanders blue or maroon and the Chiefs who really cares (jokes, you grumpy little Chieftans: black or a yellow/red combo for you).
OR bring the franchise partners more into the alternate / away jersey. For the Highlanders this is super easy as the entire region consists of three teams and three colours so maroon with blue and gold trim or gold with maroon and blue trim. The Crusaders could use green, black and gold for South and Mid Canty, or a combo of blue, white and red which covers Ta$man/Nelson Bays/Marlborough/Buller/West Coast. The Blues have used a light blue which might be Cambridge Blue or is at least similar to it, so why not bring in some maroon and black? The Chiefs have multiple options here too with several partners they could honour, whilst it goes without saying that the canes go with an orange, white and blue number.

I love the length and thought to build the convincing back-story before... boom, the punchline.

I wasn't suggesting an exact replica but to use maroon as the main colour in an away/alternative jersey.
Some fans might buy every new SR jersey of their team but I bet the majority don't. The only Chiefs jersey I own is the 1996 heritage jersey that was released in 2019.

ive always liked this idea
always felt the obvious choice for the Landers was Gold as it was common between our three feeder unions

A better look at the new Blues away jersey -

Yuck. I wouldn't buy that - but then I wouldn't buy the latest one or last years. I would buy an Otago Raiders jersey though.

Highlanders
IMO, the ugliest away outfit: they seem to have mixed green and black, to get some sort of grey-green colour for the collar, cuffs and shorts. In this photo it looks more grey, but having seen the other photos, it's definitely some kind of green. On instagram people describe it as cowshit green.
a closer looks...
