I mention one thing, in all seriousness and I wake up to all this. None of you are my friends anymore.
It's an actuarial fact that lack of friendship reduces lifespan.
On a positive note, that mean you'll probably get a better annuity rate with your pension pot when you retire,
Is your wife eligible for a widow's pension?

Not that I’ve told her.

Unlikely given there's likely to be bugger all left of value in in the wine cellar

That seems based on an assumption that you had been invited round.

one in particular who made £40m by growing and selling his firm!
Yes, but he didn't go out and buy a Spitfire after that and race it at Reno did he? He put it all in bonds and term deposits.
He'd have bought a Hawker Hurricane before a Spitfire, that's for sure. Much higher survival rate.

I always bring my own booze when I visit people.

@victor-meldrew One for the grumpy old man thread. When you take a nice bottle and it doesn't get opened and instead you get given the latest Bulgarian Shiraz and your Grand Cru is never seen again

You and I must know some of the same people or were you giving me the heads up regarding @Victor-Meldrew ?

I'm too much of a gentleman to embarrass people by bringing wine they wouldn't really appreciate.

Each to his own, I guess. I just drink the stuff.

Wow, what a 48 hours in Europe.
So, like falling dominoes, all the big countries halted the AZ jab on the back of some scare mongering reporting. UK keeps soldiering on. Then the all U-turn on it after the EMA declared it was safe. At the same time the politicising of their vaccine programme continued as the tough talk rambled on about sharing vaccines etc.
So basically all the achieved was a temporary pointless delay to their programme, and an whole lot of anxiety for people about taking the AZ jab.
100% completely pointless exercise with the sole purpose of politics.

I see France is going back into lock down too. I imagine that there are quite a few people happy that Europe isn't calling the shots in the UK now.
The French capital Paris is set to go into a month-long Covid lockdown as the country fears a third wave. Another 15 regions in the country will also be placed under the same measures from midnight on Friday. These measures will not be as strict as the previous lockdown, Prime Minister Jean Castex said, with people allowed to exercise outdoors. France has recorded more than 35,000 new cases within the past 24 hours. Mr Castex said a "third wave" of infections in the country was looking increasingly likely. The situation in Paris is particularly worrying with 1,200 people in intensive care there, more than at the peak of the second wave in November, Health Minister Olivier Veran said.

Amusingly, a UK company acquired the go-to supplier of lipids for research and pharma, Avanti Polar Lipids (AL, USA), last year, so the UK government might be able to retaliate by blocking their supplies going to the EU for the Pfizer vaccine.
yeah, I read that as well. Although I suspect that the UK will point this out but not block to try and take the high road.
-
@tewaio It does beggar belief. Go back a week or two when the EU were complaining about AZ supply issues and trying to imply it was a UK problem and you then find out that France had used only16% of the vaccines already supplied as at the end of February. It is such a cluster fuck and they’re all throwing as much shit as possible to detract from their massive and continued mistakes.

It is astonishing to me that the countries of Europe can unnecessarily cast doubt on the AZ vaccine for political purposes, then U turn, and simultaneously keep criticising AZ for not supplying them with the vaccine first
Covering their arses, but can't make up their mind which cheek to use.
