Michael Slater has already escaped India and is in the Maldives until he can return home
Michael Slater is a fucking tool
He might be a tool but he's % here. What sort of government decides to threaten Australian citizens with gaol for the crime of returning to Australia?

yeah nah.
the jail bit is probably fair, but the travel ban is 100% on point. And with people just slipping around the world to find alternative ways home, what is the option?
But my main point is, it's a bit fucking rich for a dude who went to India voluntarily to make money, who left India to go to a tropical resort, to take pot shots at government policy

It's a job.
The government decided to prevent people going overseas, then decided to grant exceptions, then decided to make people who had the temerity to travel during what scientifically and mathematically can best be described as a bad flu season pay for their own quarantine. Then arbitrarily decides to implement yet another fucking stupid policy of preventing the same people it let out of the country from returning home. Then it gets pissy to learn others understand about connecting flights and hubs.
This government and the people who support it can go get fucked.

To let Australians come home? Fuck yes. No bullshit restrictions on flights. Administer quarantine for the infected and vaccination rollout like a competent administration.
I've come to the conclusion over the last year watching science be ignored and rational thought disappear that perhaps we really do need a pandemic. Like H1N1 on steroids to thin the herd. Hopefully it can be genetically altered to relieve us of the panic merchants, pearl clutchers and retards.

my problem is, we don't have either of those things. Quarantine is done in fucking inner-city hotels and unqualified staff. Hence leaks.
The vaccine roll out is not happening.
And every time there is a case, State Governments lose their goddam minds.
If everything worked like it should then i am with you, but we both know this thing has been horribly handled and stupidly messaged for the past 13-14 months.

I don't see it changing. If anything it's emboldened them knowing we're so comfortable in this country people willingly give up any pretence of being a liberal democracy and hide under the bed. At current rates of vaccination Australia will be doing this in 2023.

It's an issue because this has laid it very bare that you only need to make people scared to pretty much do what you want, with very few questions. Public attitudes and state elections have proven it.
And what's worse is, any questions that do arise are just fobbed off by pointing at some other government with a different colour. States v Feds, Labor states v Liberal states. Everyone v WA. It's bullshit.
Did you see Qld's latest rule? If you have been at an identified COVID site, you have to go in to managed quarantine for 14 days, with no alternative. Tested negative? doesn't matter, in you go. Given all the fucking evidence of the last few "scares" that is totally insane.
So no, on the basis of idiocy like that, i am not against harder border protections, because i cannot trust my state government.

That's entirely my point - despite our every acquiescence to what is presented as a reasonable measure to a new threat, it just keeps getting worse. Remember when we were asked to buy time for the health system to ramp up to cope? What the fuck happened to that? Now if someone farts in Sydney, other States slam shut. Mandated tracing apps for the temerity of going outside. It's like East Germany during the 70s (I presume), but with Amazon.

well, the messaging changed last year. Now it's eradication because that message wins elections.
And people are totally fine with it. And no one asks any questions. Not the media. Not the population. As i said before the answer is always "it's the Feds' fault" or "look at The UK/Italy/india, if we didn't make these hard decisions, then we would end up like them" and people nod their heads and say "yep, good stuff"
What i really hate is i have started to sound like the swivel-headed conspiracy loons. The mask rules were a fucking joke, so i sounded anti-mask. The covid risk in Australia is minimal, so i sound like a "it's just the flu" guy.
No, i am just someone who likes to think they have a decent handle on risk, and would like more discussion framed around acceptable risk levels. Rather than "any risk is absolute".
-
also, i note we have stopped pointing at the UK/USA as a potential outcome now that they are absolutely smashing their vaccine rollouts.
it's refreshing to see our current record is on a par with Kazakhstan

Re the India travel thing.
I know it's big numbers, but what is the rate of infection? Is it worse than elsewhere?
Or is it fairly 'standard' in terms of % population infected and just amplified because 1.6 Billion? (And relative lack of medical facilities.)
Not sure where to look for info.
If the latter I really don't see the need for total travel ban on top of quarantine.
If it's that bad and every second person in India has it increase the quarantine measures.

You won't find that information. India's official numbers have plateaued out at what the infrastructure can count and what local and national government is prepared to admit.
I know that the NZ government put in their travel ban based on % of travellers arriving at MIQ infected.

very light NSW restrictions.
Now i await Dear Leader and the Deputy Cuck to declare Sydney New New Delhi and to execute anyone who has been to NSW in the past 5 years on site.

Im sure WA will join QLD in such an action.
