But not everyone knows Russell was the capital.
Okiato really. "Pedant" but they have a sign up so better give them their due.
Russell was known as the hell hole of the pacific. Full of whalers /sailors looking for hookers who were available I believe. Likely to have have been a fun town. Was there last week and it seems to have quietened down a bit. I think that there was a sailor but he wasn't my type and the hookers were completely absent.

@snowy Another thing COVID is to blame for. Used to be a little knocking shop in the street between York and the waterfront (never have known what it's called) There was an old junk shop - next to it was a half shop with a door that was always curtained off.
Relied on the Cruise ships apparently and has had to shut up shop but until very recently the spirit of Kororareka lived on. Allegedly

@snowy was basically lawless, they had to get Busby??? over from NSW to try and instill some civility into the locals (everyone - whalers, whores, Maori) which lead to the Treaty.
If you are ever in Waitangi, the interactive Museum there is well worth the hour or so, Pompallier House in Russell is a good visit too.
Learn how a number of sayings that came from the printing industry (can never remember them) such as Upper and Lower case letters, purely cos they were kept in an 'upper' case and a 'lower' case.

@taniwharugby and check the date on the newspaper on display

@jc Only a Porsche. I could buy the whole of freaking Russell. I was anchored up in the Bay once for 11 days and there was nothing to do but row ashore to the Duke and eat oysters and drink beer. Plus I usually have at least two weekends there every year.

I feel your pain but am happy to take it on for you, Prometheus-like.

It wasn't Russell but Hobson did change its name to Russell (I believe) but not sure when it became known as Old Russell or changed back to Okiato...

I think that you would approve. We stayed at Kauri Cliffs then went to the Duke. I actually preferred the Duke, mostly in terms of price (dinner, bed, and breakfast deal) had a great room, big balcony to sit and drink on, and it's still got a pretty chilled pub feel to it.

Self-avowed anti-racist paid megabucks to fight racism turns out to be a racist.
Never saw that one coming..

He has remained with the company however.
Not fired.

@tim it's ridiculous. You simply can't say anything online anymore
Correct mate. I advise mocking this premise/strategy in private conversations wherever and whenever you can.
And for God's sake teach your children why it's wrong, cannot last and ruins good and innocent people's lives
ALL of humanity's most tragic events use this silencing and fear as a tactic to cause untold harm.
