NZs vaccine strategy for a highly contagious virus has a problem. That most if not all countries have. The not insignificant part of the population that refuse to be vaccinated. Generally healthy people aged 20 to 65 who think they have nothing to fear and feel that the altruistic good of herd immunity does not trump their personal freedoms.
You can only save those who want to be saved
But at the price of shutting down NZ to itself and the world? Is NZ just planning to string together a series of level 4 lockdowns over the next couple of years each time a case is confirmed? How long will people accept that before it wears thin?
That wasn't my take of the plan (such as it was) last week, it seems to be a plan of 'buy enough time to get everyone vaccinated who wants to be, and then you take your chances'. Unfortunately "front of the queue" (Chris Hipkins) for vaccines turned out to be one of the slowest in the OECD, but another 2-4 months and it looks like we're there.
If there's any sort of silver lining out of this Level 4, maybe it will give the vaccine hesitant/slack a bit of a nudge.
But one everyone’s vaccinated who wants to be…then the govt has to accept that opening up the country means those that aren’t vaccinated risk getting infected. Will jacinda accept that??
Yes.
In my opinion they should be told that if you aren't vaccinated then you don't get hospitilisation or respiratory / ventilator assistance. You made your choice, live / or die with it.
You know that would never float, but yes I agree. Funny how when there is a measles outbreak or such incident, all the anti-vaxx parents come out of the woodwork frantically wanting medical attention

Our medical system couldn't even deal with spikes in normal Winter illness, let alone a full blown covid19 outbreak, that is why we lockdown and enforce MIQ. As we all know, no one seems to want to force people to have the vaccine (believe me, I'm all for enforcing it). What we need is to vaccinate every person that wants to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
This is what kills me, and Oz is the same. How much has Covid and these lockdowns cost us? And yet what have we spent on improving our healthcare system? Or even building fit-for-purpose MIQ? It feels like we are exactly where we were 18 months ago.
Healthcare is expensive. It takes years to upgrade or build new facilities in NZ
That's a massive cop-out. It takes too long so let's not start? May as well not build new roads either.
It would not be hard to build proper MIQ outside Auckland CBD. How many ventilators do we have?
It's been 18mths, what's been achieved?
Don't make the mistake of thinking I don't agree with you. Just saying that the wheels of bureaucracy are painfully slow. It is a criticism not a justification

MsDM had her first jab last night. Apparently there were scores of people without appointments who were trying to get in having suddenly decided getting a jab was a good idea.
One of my co-workers was in Ward 65 last week and now has flu like symptoms...
Thing is the whole building has been in the grip of a flu like bug for the past month so it is most likely she's just the latest to go down with it - but the levels of concern are approaching hysteria.

We go from periods of apathy into periods of hysteria. Life is strange right now

From the looks of my Facebook feed, plenty are happy to have the do not enter sign up forever.
I dont want people in NZ getting sick and dying, but at some point the virus will enter the country, so hopefully this stimulates people to get their shots and then the government to face that reality,

In a city/country full of people who are (supposedly) worth millions of dollars, how about the government finds a way of confronting some of those infrastructure issues?

We have been on water use restrictions for most of the year, in a city where it rains a lot. The system is full of leaks so we waste hundreds of thousands of litres. We have a cross harbour bridge which can no longer be repaired and no replacement bridge ready to be built. Our roads are fucked. Yours is a valid question but there are no easy answers when bureaucrats are involved

@billy-tell yea fun as watching nz in lockdown...what a dumb comment
Not as fun as not getting home for my dads 70th. Or my cousins funeral. FFS as a kiwi citizen I’m cut off from my own country. I’m fully vaccinated but to come home, to my country, I’d have to go on a waiting list, to spend 2 weeks in a hotel. And not sure I can bring the wife, coz she’s not a nz citizen. How long does is this expected to go on for? So yeah I would find it ironic that after shutting nz off to its citizens the virus ends up taking hold anyway.
Do you not read the news mate? They laid out the plan for next year a few days ago.
If people like you had your way, then there'd be plenty of people whose dad's 70th would be dad's funeral instead.what a fucking dick comment. uppercut yourself

Our good fortune is part of the problem. It creates apathy and the illusion that no vax is actually a credible option. Pictures of mass mortuaries and wards full of people on ventilators fail to hit home to these people when it isn't even happening in NZ

I'm annoyed because I could get my jab tomorrow but now I can't. I like the idea of "driveby" jabbing. I usually have my arm out the window of the ute so I just have to cruise past the local medical centre like it was a Maccas. Job / jab done.
They are actually talking about doing that after the 48 hour hiatus.
Uggg so you were booked for a jab and now have to rebook? Means back down the list i presume. I only booked yesterday for early Sept and the wife rang our local an hour later and got mid September.
Drive by jabbing would be good!

48 hours to get the setup right and you should be all go
This is the stuff that kills me, why wasn't that in place ALREADY? Work with the assumption that there will be more lockdowns and enable those delivering them to work with both models.
This is why people complain about this governments ability to deliver. They rely on luck and are reactive instead of proactive. Comedy hour stuff.

Why should we be surprised? The bureaucracy is exactly how we think it is. Lots of people too afraid to do anything for fear of drawing attention to themselves

Never have had to work in real jobs and afraid to do anything too unpopular in case it loses votes. That's why are Covid annoucemnets are 30mins of arse covering before telling people the necessary details.

I'm not even talking about the government. Once they make a decision to do something the bureaucracy will make sure it takes so long to action it will often be years before things happen. And by then another lot is in charge and they want to reassess the plan of action. And the merry go round goes on

That's a false distinction IMO.

Not sure how it will pan out actually. They might shift everything by a couple of days or they might make rebookings. Can't talk to anyone so will have to see.
It is a bit fucked that the jab centres are so far apart. It was North Shore or Wellsford for me. Neither is convenient and Warkworth / Snells beach/ Matakana are the major population bases. Where did you go @Tim ?

images like this are both awesomely powerful, and scary
then we have this, the different time frames for Auckland, but borders open for spread until then??
