5 to 10 sick days has a big impact in average sick leave usage but it's not from an average of nearly 5 to an average of nearly 10
It started on July 24. We are only a couple of months in and that has been in lockdown, so the research is projection, not actuality surely. I wouldn't use the public service as a general indicator of the private sector either. You are quite right though it is a significant cost to employers government or otherwise. Over %50 cost increase if those days are averaged out.
It's not projected research as it wasn't part of the impact analysis for the Holidays Act amendment, it was research from long before that which looked at companies which increased sick leave from 5 days to more than that, but 10 days was the most common. I have a feeling it was CLEW (Vic Uni) but it could have been someone else.
-
@godder Appreciate seeing it if you can find it. Sample sizes that sort of thing. I studied stats for a while at uni so intrigued what it was all based on.
Judging peoples health is also very dubious. Some will be honest others not in a workplace (maybe the surf was up...)
It's still a 50% increase to a business either way using those numbers. So it does have an impact.

the employer benefits greatly in reduced sick leave usage
Hmmm. Really. If you give an employee 10 days sick leave they take it. If you give them 5 that is what they use.
I agree about sick people at work, don't want that.
Won't even comment on vaccines. We agree, it should be obvious.
I like the goon squad idea, better than bribing morons.
Rubbish!
We have untold amounts of sick leave in the business not taken each year
Lucky you!!

Same
We allow people to carry over sick leave up to 20 days. There would be scores of people with 20 days accrued.
There are a minority who use it as an entitlement to be enjoyed to the full, but it is a minority and always has been everywhere that I have worked.
Mind you that minority are a monumental pain in the arse. Fortunately they are normally consistent assholes across their employment so give ample opportunities to exit them or pay them less than their peers

So do we and there is no value to them either so it is rather genuine.

My staff have been on paid holiday for a couple of months in the last 18 months sick or not.
@Hooroo Want a job? Or send me some staff? The healthy ones.
No! Do you know how hard it is to recruit in the CNI???

@hooroo I know, at my last job my sick leave was capped at 100 days, and had <5 days sick in 10 years, my current job is 10 I think? I actually have no idea, I have had 2 sick days in 6 years here.
you are either a medical marvel, or one of those martyrs who feels the need to be at work no matter what
-
@mariner4life I just don't get sick...which means I'll likely get some rare cancer the day I retire and be dead in a month.
We get 5 Wellness days, to take off whenever not as annual leave, if you dont take them by end of year you lose them.

some of the new-age tech companies offer unlimited leave - be interesting to see the results of that over a 10+ year period
That's less common, but the companies and government departments that do offer that for sick leave in NZ don't report any difference between that and a reasonable finite figure. When I was looking into this for work, ANZ came up as the main proponents of uncapped sick leave in corporate NZ, although talking to union organisers and delegates from there, it's not all sunshine and roses (ANZ manage it quite strictly).
Unlimited annual leave is a trap unless there is a great workplace culture about taking leave (not to mention legal issues in NZ with the Holidays Act which requires unused annual leave to be paid out when someone leaves employment). Totally legal in the USA because there is no federal minimum, so it means no liability for payment which is great for startups needing to minimise liabilities on the balance sheet or who want to pretend they offer great benefits while the job is a relentless grind with no opportunity to take leave as there is nobody else to do the work in your absence.

We've got effectively unlimited sick leave - but as a part owner of the business, I hate taking time off But seriously, in a healthy business people take time if they're sick, get encouraged to, and the sick leave amounts aren't massive. The number of people who abuse it is very very low

I don't think that all that unusual, before I wnet o Aus to live I had worked at company for 15 years and used 5 days sick pay and a couple of them were for a funeral. I worked in Aus for 23 years (self employed) but only had 2 days off, never felt I worked when I was sick, just some people don't get sick.

@nzzp I had to have a 'discussion ' with one of my team about excessive sick leave, they'd average maybe half a dozen unpaid days a year.
worked with someone who was going on holiday, didn't have enough leave, so told the office they were taking sick leave as annual leave. Then were surprised when the leave got declined. Like, WTAF...

I know there were days when I felt off but popped a few pills and got on with it. Those days are gone now
