World Club Cup?
-
not sure if it needs its own thread, interesting
-
Until an official decision has been made that there will indeed be a "World Club Cup", this seems the best place to post this.
-
@stargazer just posted it in the Super rugby Thread but yeah, this is a better location
@Machpants ...i mean...we made the SSTT final...but your probably right, maybe hes excited the saders might pick up some injuries

Well they might do very well, relative to other SR teams. No way there will be any ABs involved, even if this pipe dream goes ahead.

@machpants To me, it's again one of those money grabs. You'll never get all the best teams in the world with their strongest line-ups, unless NH and SH competitions run exactly parallel (I can't see that happening any time soon). At the end of SR there is no time for ABs, because of the July tests; NPC players should have their break before they join their NPC teams; if not, then NPC will suffer.
If it's before SR, then the SH teams will be seriously undercooked and not able to compete at their best.
If it's during the second half of the year, again ABs won't be available and NPC is being played.
I understand those pushing for this in the NH want to play the World Champions Cup instead of the final stages of the Heineken/European Champions Cup. Not sure whether they mean QF, SF and/or Final, but those stages are usually played between March and May, so right in the middle of SR.
I'd be really interested to know how they think they're going to solve this timing issue as well as player welfare issues.
If they want to do this without test players being available, it will be nothing but a joke.

@stargazer you may have just explained why they have officially been talking for a year and its been rumoured for much...much longer
agreed its just a money grab, i mean, apparently they cant find space for a full home and away round robin for super rugby...but can try and find room for a whole separate comp
-
2028, allegedly
If true, super rugby teams are stupidly over represented, as are Japan
Eight teams from the Champions Cup will qualify for the new global event, six from Super Rugby and two more, probably from Japan’s Rugby League One, most likely competing in a knockout format across four weekends of June..
8 from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, and South Africa.
6 from NZ, Oz, and Fiji (Tonga, Samoa? Yeah right)
2 from possibly Japan, and if that's the case they're the only nation guaranteed to be there
The idea of a world club championship has been years in the devising, but the breakthrough has been an agreement by all parties on the dates of the competition. Currently, the finals of the two major competitions involved, north and south, are played in June. All have agreed to move their finals to May, which will be achieved in the north by filling in the four weekends usually occupied by the Champions Cup..
Why not play the finals in June, confused as fuck

Well it is about money of course (isn't every pro comp), but isn't a case of damned if they try something like this and damned if they don't? I do genuinely think there will be pretty big interest in the comp, I not sure of details and how keen I am on it, but I can bet a lot of sports would like something similar?
I will add, I know I will be watching it if I can! -

@Machpants I read it as finals in May so world cup comp is played during June?
Oh that maybe the case, I assumed it would be straight into knock outs, but that might not be the case
