@mn5 At Wellington. Or Auckland. Wellington I heard was peaceful. A friendly atmosphere and a good sized crowd. And my understanding is it wasn't anti vac but pro freedom.
Sounds like our sources have different views on things

Yeah, different perception based on where you sit I guess.
So the yelling into Police faces. The outright abuse of journalists doing their job etc didn't happen or just not near you? And wtf does that ex US President have to do with anything?
Looked likeferals from both ends of the spectrum to me.Some people need to relearn what freedom actually means or go live in the bush.

@crucial Pro-Freedom and threatening to shut down a city dont sound exactly complementary to me. I imagine there are some people genuinely concerned about the impingement of their democratic freedoms but from what little I saw it seemed more like a grand coalition of the feral.
Just from reading the signs on display

Yep I’m picturing the conversation with the ex wife right now…..
“Sorry, some feral fucks have blocked the motorway, I can’t come and get the boys today…..”

99% would have been fine. Just concerned about the direction this country is going (as I am but I wasn't there. I was told about a brief report from someone who was). But the media reporting would focus on the 1% of course.
Are you even a little concerned about where we are heading in NZ. I am and I'm in the vunerable older age group
-
Given the recent 'freedom' protests, today's relaxation of restrictions in Auckland and the very real lockdown fatigue felt - in Auckland at least - I think this graph is interesting. NZ really has had it reasonably easy overall and countries like UK for all the talk of Freedom Day - it's relative. Still quite locked down it seems and nowhere near as open as NZ L1 (remember that ?)

For a start this is the wrong flagpole to run the flag up on that.
Irrespective of the govt, the country needs to get open and moving. We know that we aren't a rich country health infrastructure wise because we simply dont have a big population. Whether you dont like people telling you what you should do or not, it is common sense for the good of the country as a whole to get with the vax.
Plus, you have a vote. If you don't like then vote for someone else. Simple.
So many people with the stupid argument that they won't vax because they are being told to. Suck it up and stop being selfish FFS. This isn't about you.
Are you free to smoke in public places? Free to drink and drive? Free to wear a seatbelt?
You have freedom to make choices. Those choices come with consequences.
As for teachers crying that they love their job and shouldn't bear consequences? What about the children in your care? They have their personal risk increased because you won't play your part in society simply because you want to 'make a point'. Tough shit. There is a choice to make a good decision for yourself and for everyone else. Those people yesterday are no better than children throwing tantrums because they don't want to do what mum and dad say. The answer is the same as always. Leave home and see how you get on.

If NZ went tits up and followed the same path as the UK the total deaths would be around 9,000, of which a big percentage would be over 75 and/or already seriously ill.
Not a huge number in the big scheme of things.
It’s time to move on and let the die fall.

it's callous as fuck but
this
if, after everything that has been done, people die from Covid, then they were gonna die anyway. Short of locking the country away for eternity (or until they die of something else) those people are doomed.

NZ deaths from WWI were about 16k and we commemorate those losses every year. Just a thought.
Although the age profiles of NZ and UK are similar we have a high rate of respiratory illness (asthma) and health problems are grouped in ethnic risks. I guess that throws out decision problems that point to knowingly putting identifiable groups to risk.
I agree that we need to make this something we live with but don't forget that we are a small population and the degrees of separation are much smaller. Something like 9k dead over a 18 month period would touch almost everybody.
Besides that I don't like the idea of the aged as 'disposable'

What a ridiculous comparison. NZ was five times smaller than it is now, and those people were a sizeable % of the young future males of the country.
Edit: 33,300 people died in NZ in 2018. Any death is a tragedy, but it happens.
Edit edit: More than 9000 in 2018 from cancer. We're not putting up statues for them.

9000 people died in the 1918 influenza pandemic and we don't commemorate them.
It's almost like the reason we commemorate the casualties from wars because of what they died for, not just the fact that they died.

It wasn't meant to be a comparison just a counterpoint and despite the growth of the NZ population 9k is still a lot of people.
I think that it was worked out that projected COVID deaths would end up something like the number three cause of death as a group.
I totally buy into the fact that we have to 'live with it' to an extent but don't buy into the argument that the elderly were going to die anyway.
Why do we bother treating health conditions of the elderly (or unhealthy) if that is the logic ? Could save a lot of money if we just said, over 80 go sit in the corner and pass away. -

Yep, a counterpoint that was going to get misunderstood.
