@nta If I was doing it on a Mac it would be Command+k (takes you straight to the Connect To Server dialog), then type smb://nameofcomputer/nameofdrive then hit Return. You can enter the address as an IP address too, but us Mac people are no good with remembering numbers, we’re creative dontchaknow

The device is a standalone NAS so doesn't report back a name in the same way as a computer
No doubt I could edit the equivalent of a Host File entry on the Macs in question, but really could not be fucking bothered learning how.The kids probably won't use it, but I've managed to get them set up with your instructions - thanks! Now we wait until they fill up their existing storage and bitch that I didn't provide them a solution

@nta Yeah, you’d think eh? But sadly no. Most of the people who try to sell you a Mac in a shop over here are embarrassing as well. The bullshit I’ve heard Noel Leeming and Harvey Norman salesmen telling punters is not funny. A while back I heard one telling a lady who wanted a new iPad for her kid to replace an older one (i.e. she’s already got an operating appleID and iCloud account) that sure, if they brought them in they would arrange to transfer all the data for a very reasonable fee. Fucking sharks.

@nta Open Finder, Connect to Server and type in the address or browse if it’s on the same network, click Connect. It’s then in the sidebar under Location. Add it to a list of favourites in the same window if you want so you don’t have to locate it ever again. Add it to login items for a user if you want it to load every time they log in.
What am I missing?

I'm sure there is a brilliant way to do this on the command line in Mac, but when I open "Finder" it lists a whole heap of shit and is poorly ordered.

"Easiest way is to type the command cd followed by a space, then drag the icon for the external onto the Terminal window, then hit the return key. You can also find the path using the mount command and enter that after cd. Then you should be able to navigate to the .Trash folder and do any copying or moving you need to do."

I got the new Macbook Pro. One of the cheaper models but it's pretty choice. The camera at the top of the screen can be a bit of a pain but you get used to it.
Couple of problems I've had with Macs in the past.
Getting the battery replaced is ridiculously expensive if you go through the recommended service provider. I had a quote to replace the battery in my 2016/17 Macbook pro and they advised it would be $600-$700. I ended up taking it to some dodgy looking place that was a dairy/computer IT place. Charged me $150 and it still works fine.
I had a 2011/12 Macbook pro where the motherboard (something like that) died. Apple knew this was an issue but mine died about one year after they stopped their support of fixing for free. I could either spend $1,000+ on getting a new part, or $700 odd on putting in a 2nd hand part that they couldn't guarantee would last long. I probably should've investigated using the Consumers Guarantees act but the computer was getting on a bit and I'm lazy.

@voodoo FYI as you’re not normally a Mac guy, make sure you buy via the Education store as they have a small discount so you’ll save a bit of cash.

We waited until post-Xmas sales and saved a couple of hundred I think. Apple don't do discounts, generally speaking.
I got my latest Air and iPhone on sale at JB, which was actually a better deal than the Education discount. Then I was going to get the tax back when I flew to NZ which didn't happen due to Gladys' Delta.
I make it a rule never to pay full price for Apple products. I once got a Macbook 11" for nearly half price at Harvey Norman Malaysia in a Xmas sale.

The Boy's 13" Macbook Air is starting to get a bit tired, he's about to turn 18, and his interest in Multimedia (including video/photo editing, effects, music, etc) means he's probably due a new macbook. When I go to JB Hifi here in Oz and lock the price margin in at $2k-$3k, it ends up with basically 2 options if I want to go New:
Macbook Pro 13-inch with M1 chip and 512GB @ $2199
OR
Macbook Pro 14-inch with M1 chip and 512GB @ $2999The third option is a Refurb:
MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.0GHz i5 chip and 512GB @ $2549
Size of monitor isn't really a thing as you can always plug in a decent 4K unit, so I guess my question is between the New M1 and the refurbed i5 chip.
Advice appreciated.

@machpants I’m voting the other way. I have a big, nerdy collection of macs. The M1Pro (NOT Max) that my wife uses is significantly faster than the i9 Macbook Pro 16 I have when they are both running on battery. They are about the same on mains power.
An i5 powered Macbook is nowhere near the performance of one of the M1 powered versions.

Yup, probably not even as good as the M1, let alone the pro. It would interesting with the latest 12th gen Intels, which are awesome. But they're not available. So if you want to be stuck in that dictatorial microsystem that is apple, M1 is the way to go!

I have the new 13 inch pro, the M1 Macbook air, and the Intel Macbook air right before that.
I don't do any video editing but do a lot on SPSS and all three handle that well (naturally the pro is faster).
Personally speaking, I get really good performance from the Air and like it better as it is lighter and easier to carry.
However, having all the ports on the Pro makes it my take to class/conference computer, and if you need power I would say it has plentyyyyy.
