Tonga - volcano eruption
-
It's trashed our local harbor
-
@taniwharugby Yeah it was very odd. It didn’t have by duration to speak of, just a loud thud that shook the house. I looked all around the house to see if something had fallen over, but nothing.
-
Yep heard it in the bay. More of a feeling than a sound. Big, low, bang.
-
@machpants a rather ironic part of that, is that the Marina would likely have had most of its boats back in when it happened, given the storm warning for huge swells days earlier, loads of boaties would have returned for, er, safe harbour...one of my clients in that very predicament (would have been better staying where they were) instead, thier boat now sits with its bum in the mud and nose breaching the surface!

Not really the tone of the thread but
This eruption has resulted in some beautiful sunrises here

@antipodean Holy shit. I'm surprised there haven't been more fatalities

I don't think they know about the toll on some of the islands, they're cut off. But looking at the videos that have appeared, it wasn't a huge wave/surge, thankfully. People were able to hold on, or easily get above, mostly. It wasn't carrying away houses, even if it was damaging them. So although the low lying Island got lots of damage, hopefully it looks like less fatalities. However environmental health going forward is a major problem, fresh water, sewerage, etc

Her the feeling this will be quite bad in the outer islands nearer the volcano.
Although one of the major island groups in Tonga (cant remember uf Ha'apai or Va'avu ) seemed to be quite high lying. Think it us Va'avu. So might get quite bad in Ha'apai group. Which is closest. Isnt that the group volcano is actually in?
