@mariner4life since when has that been a requirement on the fern?
it actually used to, and it made discussion possible.

I quite like the "Oh, I'll just leave this here. It will make me look clever by illustrating my point without me actually saying it" approach, as nearly always - it does the complete opposite.
It's typically a standalone point of data, which might support one's stance on something in an echo-chamber, but to a wider audience - is largely irrelevant. And therefore, makes the poster look FAR from clever.Also... it's easily ignored. One can just look at the piece-of-info in isolation, as a mildly interesting snippet, and ignore the motives of the poster, because... they didn't actually state their ridiculous opinion, so it doesn't need to be debated.
Everybody's happy - either in delusion or laziness. -
@mariner4life There are a lot of neo-nazi and neo-nazi associated paramilitary groups in Ukraine. Like Azov Battalion.
-
@mariner4life They're a lot of neo-nazi and neo-nazi associated paramilitary groups in Ukraine. Like Azov Battalion.
no doubt.
But in the 1930s a lot of them were less pro-Nazi and more Anti-soviet. Old mate being celebrated above was pro-Germany as a way to get Ukrainian independence. Right up until they chucked him in jail for trying have an independent Ukraine.
Eastern Europe has proper fucked up history

@mariner4life They also had very nazi compatible views on jews.

I'm not surprised that Putin wants a sphere of influence around Russia, and if Ukraine won't play ball as he demands, he'll take what he wants.
At the end of the day, no-one is going to go to war with him over the Ukraine.
He always wanted to rebuild the old USSR, and he's doing it one small piece at a time
The Ukraine is twice the size of Poland and the second largest country in Europe. Crimea was a significant chunk of land as well with 2.4 million people. Here is what the Ukraine govt thinks: https://mfa.gov.ua/en/10-facts-you-should-know-about-russian-military-aggression-against-ukraine
Do we say the New Zealand or New Zealand? It’s Ukraine not the Ukraine.
Yeah that annoys me!
Think its a carry over of when Ukraine used to be referred to as "the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic"?
Yes. Since 1991 "the Ukraine" isn't supposed to be used and I'm probably insulting Ukrainians because I was thinking in my head of the area as it used to be known, or perhaps I've been brainwashed by Putin, or perhaps it is "the Ukraine crisis" with various regions now "liberated" but sovereignty isn't totally clear.
But it did used to be known as the Ukraine, unlike The New Zealand.
I guess I'm just living in a previous era.My apologies, gentlemen.

@jk you have more faith in people's intelligence than i...personally i think it has more to do with
Ok now you are being unnecessarily insulting.
I've just realized an archaeologist colleague of mine used to talk about his digs in "the Ukraine" but not only was English not his first language, he was also talking about the Bronze age region.
Hence it is still "the Ukraine" in some UNESCO documents on archaeological finds in the area. Anyway, I'm out of here. You guys play mean. -
@nostrildamus was not meaning to be insulting, that scene is one of the more famous ones, at least amongst people ive met especially when playing Risk, it transcended the show to some degree and i honestly think for a lot of people it is one of very few touch stones in regards to Ukraine and so may have played a role in continuing the use of the "The"
now, why they use the term could quite well be because it was the 90's and there was more of a hangover re it former name
-
When I was a kid and the shortwave band was blanketed by Soviet transmitters and English language propaganda, all easily receivable throughout the South Pacific, Radio Kiev always identified themselves as “Radio Kiev, Ukraine SSR,” there was never a “The” and I don’t recall them ever employing the prefix. I tried to get the Station I.D. here but sadly yt only has their interval signal. Pretty sure I got some airchecks I taped on a recorder and QSLs buried somewhere. Hey man, when it was one tv channel, in b&w, off-air at midnight, kids had to find their own entertainment. 73s!

It now has a choice, effectively allow Putin to move westwards to eventually confront EU states like Poland in a few years time, or have its economy fucked by high energy prices if Russia turns the gas supply off. The chickens may be coming home to roost.
Russia needs export dollars more than the EU needs gas long term. It would decimate Russia's economy - petroleum exports constitutes half its exports.
Not to mention Ukraine has a sheetload of mineral resources, including uranium, and a very large percentage of arable land.

The circular firing squad cometh. The question America is asking tonight is, Is Sleepy Joe awake?

@kid-chocolate the answer would be no

China’s not a small market. China doesn’t always play by our rules. They have their own self-interests and could flip us all the bird. They also like oil, ‘cos they don’t have the deepest reserves. While the rest of us have been distracted and dancing to panic from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chairman Xi has been quietly getting chummy with Vlad. Could just be a coincidence?
