"Russian troop phone calls in Ukraine were intercepted after they used commercial phone lines to communicate. Russia built a 'secure' phone that relied on stable infrastructure in a warzone
The military was forced to use the unencrypted lines of communication after their own attacks on 3G towers broke the Russian government-built 'Era cryptophone' that was meant to be used to communicate.
The security failure allowed Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency to confirm that Russian general Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff of the 41st Army, was killed"

@victor-meldrew the hits just keep coming don't they. I guess 4G will be around for a while but how can any system be full proof if it's reliant on infrastructure... that you might be blowing up!
-
Mass formation psychosis, but it hits Vlad where it hurts the most, and that’s the main thing.
-
-
@antipodean that is even more terrifying. Putin's bucket list ain't exactly comparable with what most of us would be writing down!
-
@antipodean
Parkinson's. What next. Isn't the demonization of Putin and Russia a bit over the top. Esp when the wests leaders are not that great.I will wait and see.
-
@winger dont we see all those western leaders get lambasted some way or other too? i dont think biden, boris or even scomo and jacinda have avoided some sort of inflammatory headline...and they havent invaded another country in the last few weeks

If you've wondered how we sleepwalked into this while people were pointing out this would be the outcome of public policy, reflect that an ex-head of MI6 thinks Parkinson's is the best explanation.
I am worried the one-sided propaganda we are seeing on the cable networks - "Putin BAD, West blameless!!!" is a reflection of the ignorance of the general population.
Two things can be true, what Putin has done is wrong and it was wrong of the West to flagrantly dangle Ukraine NATO membership in front of Putin and expect him to do nothing. Those bordering countries should always have been neutral buffer zones.
-
one of the most concerning things is it appears Russia is just easing into things, not a full on assault, possibly expecting Ukraine to fall easily if we were to believe the narrative from Putin, if they go in all guns blazing...so from here, where to for Putin?
I dont think peace is an option for him is it? What does he want, to stop whats going on? All of Ukraine? the Eastern parts? He certainly doesnt just call a truce now and all his troops turn around and go home, and maintain his grip on Russia.

why? they should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they like.
NATO membership isn't a right.

Like the arsehole at the party, booze accentuates his arseholeness.
Same with Putin.

True, but being able to ask to join is any country’s right though.
-
Yeah, it's working out well for them.
Sorry, but if a country wants to join NATO, the EU or whatever then it's up to them to ask - and there's no justification for other country to invade and cause mass civilian casualties.
And it certainly isn't up to any country - Western or Eastern - to arbitrarily decide whether a country is a neutral buffer zone or not

UK government effectively takes takes control of Chelsea FC. Season tickets still valid and matches can go ahead but no new ticket or merchandise sales.

Just because they ask doesn't mean their request should be entertained. And there's precedent for dealing with what is perceived to be a threat.
And it certainly isn't up to any country - Western or Eastern - to arbitrarily decide whether a country is a neutral buffer zone or not
Of course it is - by mutual agreement neither side will let them join their own private club.

Yeah it is - it's a mutual agreement between the two different sides for the sake of long term peace.
