Musk & Twitter
-
Nice comment I read - It was all good when Twitter was run by Jack/Parag and his Merry Woke Band of Cancellers. But the thought of Elon introducing free speech, giving everyone a voice, instituting rational oversight, and eliminating cancellation, is just terrifying for some people and for the progressive left narrative.

Musk makes offer to buy Twitter (seems like a lowball offer to me)
I think he's doing it so he can walk away with his pride when his offer gets rejected - or at least, now he gets a 'win' either way.
He has legal trouble as well and if I were an investor in the states I'd be expecting the authorities to do something about him ignoring their rules. If he can do whatever he wants, they'll be shown to be completely useless.

@gt12
I disagree. I think he genuinely believes in free speech and wants to change the company either through activism or taking it over.As for the legal trouble, he'll probably just be fined.
I also think it possible a bidding war develops for Twitter.
I also read the Twitter BOD is preparing a "poison pill" should Musk raise his stake.

He may or may not, but either way I don’t think he’s taking over Twitter.
I’m happy to take the bet - first beer when I’m in Taiwan next time?
I also don’t think Musk cares about anyone except Elon Musk.
I find him really distasteful - he’s brilliant, truly amazing as a product developer/entrepreneur - but he’s a fluffybunny.
Edit: btw I think you may be right about the fine, which will be nothing to him anyway.
-
@gt12
I am not saying he will necessarily take it over (he might), just that accumulating that size a stake means he wants to effect *(at a minimum) some kind of meaningful changes in the company's practices.Agree with your take on him in part, but he has achieved great things and deserves a lot of respect (edited)
-
I don't think he's a fluffybunny at all. I think he's reckless and careless and irresponsible when it comes to his public comments. But I don't think he does what he does for any personal profile purpose. He's rich enough to not care what people think anymore. And the stuff he has achieved has been simply astonishing. Sure he seems grandiose at times, but maybe that's what's needed to achieve big things like he's done.
-
I think this tweet is based on the idea the Twitter is very much an ideological political company and will do everything in its power to keep Musk from making ideological changes. Cuban also reckons Musk is in it for a quick profit and isn't serious about free speech changes. I think he's wrong, but we will see.

@hooroo it is, but when they get into censorship drama they fall back on we are a private company and can moderate how we see fit.
Think hoisted by their own petard.
I suppose they can based on what their owners want.
Yep. Where it gets creepy is when like minded companies band together to decide what can be online or not. So you get Twitter, Patreon, online payment companies and credit card companies de-platforming people and new compnaies to create a closed shop.
That shouldn't be allowed.
It should soon be interesting as the UK is currently passing legislation on social media which which will enshrine free-speech and removes the companies power to do that. What is harmful contact or not will be decided by an independent body and not social media companies.

I can feel their trauma.

Plan B: Activated.
Multiple reports across news media this morning that Musk has secured financing of $46.5B and can now execute what’s called a “tender offer,” bypassing the board and their blocking measures and making offer directly to shareholders.

Any news on who he has hopping on?

Finance institutions. Morgan Stanley and others are providing financing some of it is a loan against Tesla shares
The rest ($21 billion) is from his piggy bank
Assuming the reporting is accurate..

Good timing then, as Tesla had good news a few days ago beating expectations again. Imagine having access to 21 billion to buy a dumspter fire like Twitter.

I'm still skeptical.
Why do you think Musk is doing this?
Because he likes his name in the media; he's brilliant but he's also a complete narcissist and probably the best troll in the world.
We've had a pattern for a few years of once you are uber wealthy you get to do whatever you want and I think this is an example of that.
