Jacinda resigned

They'd run out of glitter?

I thought she would step down soon, cost of living is going up, business confidence at an all time low, she was in for a hell of a time this year. Some time off followed by a cushy UN job would be a very attractive proposition for her now.
I'm still salty that she got in ahead of English, I think NZ would be in a far better position right now if he had taken over the reigns at that time.

Best news. National back in power post-election, surely.

Didn't the recent polls suggest she'd lose anyway?

It’s one thing for a PM to be unpopular but I’m not sure if National are organised enough to win an election?
-
I’m no fan of hers at all, but she really has done this the right way.
Get out far away enough from it that she is set for her next role with the UN or whatever.
She’ll continue to be the world darling and likely won’t wear any of the deserved shit that should be coming labors way.

Yeah, but this surely seals the deal.

My thoughts almost exactly. I didn't mind her, but I really don't like her government trying to turn NZ back to the 1980s.
Losing an election would spoil her brand. Never mind she didn't actually win the first election she got to be PM, and the second was basically NZ back-slapping themselves over how awesome we were at keeping Covid out (cough!), people outside NZ think she is pure magic and we are all in love with her.
I don't imagine she did it for those reasons directly though. You can see the effect being PM has had on her physically. She may want another child.
I hadn't picked the Fern to be quite so anti-Jacinda though. Are there no fans here?

Absolutely. Aged about 20 years in her time as PM.

Is there anything her government has done well?

Regrettably normal for leadership. You see the toll on Key and Obama most recently...8 years is like 20. It's ridiculously stressful and demanding

Whatever you think of her and her government decisions, the decisions and clarity of communication early in the pandemic was a masterclass.
The emotional response to Christchurch Mosque was also completely on point.

from a half interested outsider
absolutely this. I found her to be a bloody good leader in times of crisis. This doesn't make her a great PM, but her leadership in tough times was pretty much on point
NZ did bloody well early doors of COVID. i found the whole "mission accomplished" bullshit in 2020 cringey and predictably premature (the same thing happened in Qld to the exact same result) but overall in 2020 they did well. I don't think the same after that though.
Another shrewd political move here too. she plays politics bloody well.
