@Stargazer interesting they've named Banks and Havili. They both looked quite banged up.

I think if Wednesday was do or die, Christie would've played.

@ACT-Crusader Yeah, I guess they want to do absolutely everything possible to get those 5 points and don't think they can do it without Banks and Havili starting.

Good to see Banks and Havili fit enough to play - well, I hope they are. Also pleased to see Samu and Christie back. Samu, especially, had found some great form in the past few games and I think he was missed against Harbour. Edging towards full strength, though my jury is still out on bringing the top props off the bench.

Most interesting selection is Pari Pari Parkinson to make his debut. He's got some real size about him, so one to watch - 2.04 metres and 115kgs - and apparently a frame that could carry another 10kg - i.e. Brodie Retallick proportions. Still, he's only 19 - but, hopefully he'll be good enough for this level and bolster our lineout.

Is the Southland loosehead prop any good or is he just another ordinary average guy ?

Don't know about him, but I'll be keeping a close eye on that cheating Aussie in the 23 jersey!

@MN5 Played a couple of games for Waikato last year before moving south. So life's been good to him so far.

He's playing out of Invercargill, life can't have been that good to him.

Mitch hunt looking good at 10 so far. Hope he gets a go next year ahead of volavola and Mackenzie

What's happened to southland? Those southern men are supposed to be natural tight forwards. Their scrum is a disgrace

Hunt seems to have most of the same attributes as Damien McKenzie - small, fast, skillful and not lacking in courage - but, for whatever reason, he just doesn't seem to be anywhere near as effective.

Hands let him down several times today. He's probably got more potential than Volavola and Marty McKenzie, but I'm not sure he's a Super rugby quality 10 yet.

Hope Marty Banks is fit for next week - don't think we'll be much of a chance without him.

Generally a good effort by the Makos, today - though still lacked composure at times. Southland pretty much out-muscled across the board.

Was very surprised how one sided that was. 56-0! Fucking hell.

                              Hunt kicked very well.

I missed patches of this game, but did I see 3 other times Tasman crossed the line but were held up?

Southland have a very light premier comp that needs a big shake up somehow. Basically they allowed a couple of teams to consolidate the talent at the expense of a strong comp. Fringe teams at Prem level decided it wasn't good for them to trot out each weekend for a thumping so withdrew to the next div down and played country footy for fun.
They have got a bit caught up in fast tracking young players and making promises so they don't lose them to other unions/schools ala DMac.
There are some good talents there it's just that they aren't getting a good enough apprenticeship before mixing it with the big boys.
I don't know what the answer is but it is clear that changes and some clever thinking needs to be done.

Pretty sure Southland ramped up their player recruitment a few seasons back when they had the Shield - overspent and got in a financial hole. NZRU had to bail them out and they're still repaying the debt, so I guess they're also paying for that in terms of who they can afford to recruit now.

Cowan looks spent, seems to be even more niggly than he used to, doesn't offer a great deal from what I have seen this season.
