Our resident Queenslanders and Australian brothers are today laughing at the little Cantab peasants who complained about their Government and the cost of their shiny new stadium.
In case you missed it, a $7bn agreement was reached today between the QLD State Gov and the Feds for about 50/50 spend on:
- a $2.7bn upgrade to the Gabba;
Rebuild. Like SFS was rebuilt.
- A new $2.5bn 15,000 seat "arena; and
17,000 seats, which means each seat now costs less than $150,000 each.
- $2.3bn for "various" other projects
How. The. Fuck. can it cost $2.7bn to UPGRADE a stadium??!!!!
FYI, the original upgrade was costed at $1bn in 2021....
Easy to spend other people's money on vanity projects.
I get that 2023 isn’t 2019, and a stadium isn’t an arena, but Parra Stadium seats 30k and cost $300m
That’s some serious demo costs and inflation to get to 2.5bn for 17k
You're confusing two different things. The rebuild of the Gabba (50,000 seats) is not the new Arena over the railway station at Roma Street.
that's true but they're both stupidly expensive - the Gaba should not cost $2.7bn to knock down and rebuild and a new 17k arena sure as fck shouldn't cost $2.5bn
I don't disagree, but given the cost blowouts of any public infrastructure in Australia, perhaps these are the first to show their true cost?
Under promise, over deliver

So now the terrible superannuation situation in Australia has gotten worse as the Treasurer, the entirely unqualified Jim Chalmers has identified an opportunity: To legislate that superannuation funds need to fulfil certain requirements; namely investing in the white elephant projects dreamed up by the government of the day.
Not specifying that funds needs to maximise returns for members, or that funds are for retirement. No, that wouldn't satisfy their penchant for public policy prescription. Namely that we should be a collective working to a grand design as determined by a political elite.
-
Now we've got further detail, the government wants to tax unrealised gains. That's the collective intellect of Labor; bereft of detail on a simple element of taxation policy, they're unable to explain how a paper gain in illiquid assets can be dealt with.
I'm pleased I didn't drink from the Kool-Aid and invested outside of super, even accounting for the tax benefits as they were at the time.

I’ve always been very careful to keep my super balance below $3m just in case something like this came up
Would be delighted if I had that option ...

One of the few websites that quote his tweet...

lol fuck. Imagine how hard you have to fuck up for Pauline Hanson to call you out?
Has Latham been checked for a tumour or something? His general behaviour borders on deranged.

I think it all stems from when he managed to lose the election. Up until his brain fart, he was going to be Prime Minister.
I'm astonished that a seasoned politician actually wrote what he thought. One thing to think it, another entirely in this day and age to say it. Might as well have had a go at the Jews at the same time. Lunacy.
