Re: Movie review thread...

  • Interestingly, the director of Revenge of the Nerds started his career with an incredibly dark film, starring Hal Holbrook and Louise Fletcher, in which "A man hires hires five hookers to fulfil a final fantasy before killing himself and his family."

  • Basically this flopped because it wasn't animated - and it's probably about 30 minutes too long.

    I thought it was decent.

Length of film was an issue at nearly 2 hours. Some dead spots that could have easily been left out.

  • Waterworld
    JFK
    Open Range
    Thirteen Days
For the Love of the Game
    Tin Cup
    Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
    Bull Durham
    The Untouchables
    Field of Dreams

All Costner movies i really like

Didn't really like prince of thieves that much , is the postman any good? The book was great , quite an original concept in a few ways.

  • Totally agree about No Way Out, that is an excellent espionage thriller. Love the way Roger Donaldson managed to shove in some NZ stuff too.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is one of my faves, although probably more to do with Alan Rickman's brilliant Sheriff. And Sean Connery's Scottish, greybeard version of Richard the Lionheart (young English king who only spoke French and Latin) was usual high standard.

I always think more highly of men who admit to enjoying a well written, well acted romcom. Kinda weird how they get shit, but women don't really if they say they like crime/horror/action??

I got shit for admitting I thought Rock of ages was ok , name a decent rom com . I can't think of any off the top of my head .

Actually i thought Rock Of Ages was an OK movie as well. Started off like a bucket of shit but the musical numbers were good.

Tom Cruise was pretty funny. Also Catherine Zeta Jones dressed up in a leather at the end .
I actually sat through love actually , the guy from walking deads part was pretty creepy especially considering it was his best friends mrs, Alan RIckmans bit was sad not funny and the bit with Hugh Grant was shit for two reasons- it had Huhh Grant in it and had a sanctimonious anti American tirade .

Love Actually, Notting Hill, The Philadelphia Story, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, 10 things I hate about you, Crazy, Stupid Love, Wedding Crashers, Bridget Jones's Diary, The Princess Bride all in my dvd collection.

  • I wouldn't gave thought forgetting sarah Marshall and knocked up would be called rom coms but they were pretty funny.

  • The Duke of Burgundy was excellent.

Love and relationships are the key theme to both. One got dumped, can't get over her, meets new girl who just might be Ms Right. Other is building a relationship after a one night stand goes awry and learning that opposites can make it work. Plus both have a happy ending/happy for now.

    Sorry mate, romcoms.

I was going to suggest Say Anything and 500 Days of Summer but there's not too much com in them I guess - maybe Say Anything more than 500.

    Sorry mate, romcoms.

I like movies with Catherine Heigl in them...

  • spits tea

    My god, man.

  • I like movies with Catherine Heigl in them...

I like looking at Ms. Heigl too.
Watched The Martian, thought it was pretty good.

    You are one sick bastard.

  • You are one sick bastard.

You have Knocked Up in your collection!!!

Final day of the year pedantry - tick.

  • haha i hate that woman's movies, but it pales in to insignificance next to your loathing of her!

And no TR, i don't even think she's hot

  • Ms Heigls career trajectory must have reached the point where she prepared to do at least a partial nude scene I reckon.

  • Anybody see Spotlight yet?

(It's about the true story Catholic pedophile abuse scandal in Boston.)

Micheal Keaton has been having a very good comeback year, another gem for him. Funnily enough, the 2nd starring role for him in a "newspaper" movie, and this one is a lot better than the earlier Ron Howard film "The Paper" (1994) although that one is a guilty pleasure for me

One of the best reviewed films of the year (97% at RT), probably a little too lavish for my taste, but then newspaper critics seem to get bigger erections than usual for "newspaper" movies that get the small details correct that most audiences don't give a rats' ass, because it's about "them" and their "craft." Still, an excellent movie. Getting widely compared to "All the President's Men," and for good reason.

And in an incestuous way, whereas ATPM featured editor Ben Bradlee (Washington Post) as one of the main supporting characters (played by Jason Robards), this one has his kid Ben Bradlee Jr. (Boston Globe) as one of the main support actors (played by Mad Men's John Slattery). Bradlee wrote my fave book of the past couple years ("The Kid") so I was a little worried he was going to be the fall-guy in this suspense story.

Script, dialogue, pacing, suspense, acting all top notch, although Mark Ruffalo for my money needs to dial it down just a touch. He seemed a little too tightly wound in a way that wasn't fully explored.

I'll give it a 8.5/10. definitely worth seeing, but not necessarily on a big screen, a DVD rental will do the trick without losing much impact.

If the best newspaper flicks are Citizen Kane, Sweet Smell of Success, The Big Circus (a.k.a. Ace in the Hole), Park Row (Samuel Fuller's fave film he ever directed), Deadline USA and the aforementioned All the President's Men (...any others I can think of off the top of my head...?), I'd say it belongs in that sort of select company.

    Sorry mate, romcoms.

Maybe , if they keep up the stealth angle of rom coms I can tolerate them . I'm guessing you'd include bridesmaids in there?
The more I think about love actually the more appalling I remember it being , especially for Laura Linneys character . Let's be honest if you found out your mate was sitting at home watching videos of the woman you just married and coming around to your house late at night to tell her he will wait till she leaves you he'd be looking at some extensive dental work .

  • Having seen the trailer for the new Captain America movie, and thinking it looked pretty bad ass, i thought i should watch the first two (I'm not much of a Captain America fan).

The first one was okay, pretty standard fare really, but i can see why i skipped it all this time.

But The Winter Soldier is fucking fantastic, i reckon it's just about the best of the "Avengers" movies, and if Civil War is as good as it looks (and the story line promises to be given the comics) then CA will easily be the best franchise out of all of them, going way past Iron Man (movies really just carried by RDJ being smugly entertaining).

Should probably watch the 2nd Avengers movie at some point.

Along with Iron Man, Captain America is easily my favouriste 'Avenger' ( Thor is my least, girlie ass ex home and away git)

The 2nd Avengers movie isnt nearly as good as the original, no doubt mostly due to the whole 'its so fucken cool all the avengers are together in one movie' vibe.

If you look up career suicide in the dictionary you will find a picture of her. Shes just pissed off so many co stars, producers etc its not funny.
Shes known in the biz to be 'hard to work with' along with her mom/manager.

I used to have a thing for her back in the day when she was in Roswell ( i um used to watch it with um an ex girl friend)

  • I think CA is probably the only one I actually read comic books for as a kid, not sure why, but I did.

Have yet to watch WS, but might give it a crack, I've not thought alot of the Avengers movies TBH, just too much I think?

  • Deadpool trailer looks decent

I used to do the same - although Heigel was my least favourite of the 3 lead females.

Winter Soldier is my favourite Marvel too. In saying that I didn't mind the 2nd Avengers, it was never going to not live up to the hype ... and I just looked at it as switch your brain entertainment and on that level I enjoyed it.

In Star Wars news, it is about 20m off passing Avatar for the biggest US box office but missed out on taking the 2015 record off Jurassic World by $300k ... although TBF JW had a few months to make that total. $1.5B worldwide so far. Yes, I have a bit of time on my hands at the moment.

  • Didn't i read Star Wars doesn't open in China until Feb? Which means they still get to write a few more records then?

How to make all of the money in one easy step...

While nerding about I was reading about China. The initial estimate for China was only $100m total take due to the lack of success of the prequels and the fact that the original trilogy only played their for the first time this year.

But, I think they're rethinking that and think the hype will carry it like it did with Jurassic World.

  • China has become a huge earner in the last couple of years, they are probably personally responsible for the continuation of the wonderful and awesome Transformer franchise.

Last i read SW has broken some 45 Box Office records, its nuts.

  • You can see all their number 1s here:
    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars7.htm

What actually did surprise me is that it got a bunch of adjusted records as well (still behind the original for adjusted box office though).

  • Took the kids to the The Peanuts Movie. Meh. I read the comics as a kid, and didn't really dig any of them (was ordinary and childish compared to Footrot Flats) and I was fucking bored by this. Sooooo bored

Some of those records are cool (or boring as bat shit of your not into stats)
Looking at consecutive weeks at #1. Tootsie in 1982 spent 13 weeks straight at number 1, Tootsie!
On the other hand Porky's spent 8 weeks at #1...

Can often be a factor of what else is showing at the time.

But in this case... no. Though many other execs, knowing that this was coming, would have held off on their shit.

Nice try no its made in Denmark
Shesh the trolling on here these days is pretty weak 😉

  • Just catching up on this read through lack of other reading.
Shame on Mokey for lumping Princess Bride in with her list of romcoms

  • I wouldn't gave thought forgetting sarah Marshall and knocked up would be called rom coms but they were pretty funny.

I got married in the same resort that was filmed in. The line in the movie where he yells at the couple getting married in Hawaii being soooo original had me cringing, after being happy to see the place 🙂
Seriously though, every scene was somewhere that looked familiar - even had where we actually got married.

  • Watched Legend the other night about the Kray brothers in London. Good without being amazing, there were some very hilarious scenes with Tom Hardy playing both twins brilliantly. Definitely worth a watch.

  • Pan - the Hugh Jackman vehicle which was widely .... wait for it ... panned.

And so it should be. Was visually nice, but dithered and fluttered around like a drunken butterfly. The kids just couldn't act and Garrett Hedlund was shit. Jackman had some moments of delivery that were good, but overall I was glad this was an AppleTV rent and not a movie experience.
