Oh no not creepy at all...

The atheist in me puts it all down to his imagination. But about 2% of me wonders if there's something more to it...

That would make a great headline:

"Militant atheist finds religion due to reincarnated son"

Perhaps he could be Mohammed reincarnated and tell all the Muslim crazies out there that they got it all wrong

  • @canefan tell them I was talking about Raisins!

  • @Virgil @No-Quarter Both my kids are adamant our house is haunted and both claim to have see "the Ghost" several times. They separately describe something similar to each other but of course I would not rule out previous collusion. I've seen fuck all and don't give this sort of thing much credence. However I do not like going into my office building during the night or at weekends due to creepiness. It is converted from a Victorian city hospital. Our offices are in the last chance saloon ward, next to the morgue.

Spoke to a mate at work about this and he was talking about Epigenetics - the study of inherited changes in gene expression…changes that are inherited, but they are not inherent to our DNA. For instance, life experiences, which aren’t directly coded in human DNA, can actually be passed on to children.

There was a study on Rats where they gave a rat a shock, thus creating a fear of it, and this fear was passed down to its children and children's children.

I think that theory makes the most sense if we do believe the kids are remembering something. Apparently it was much stronger in Neanderthals then it is in Homo Sapiens. And most of the reported cases of this has been within the family - I.E. the child remembering a previous family member.

    Food for thought... 🙂

Possibly not a lot different to instinctive behaviors in animals. Certain things get passed on that can't be put down to physiology.
We used to have a gun dog of a certain breed that was quite unique and worked in a unique way (they are flushers). One day we took him out with a pack of others of the same breed and the breeder showed us how they worked. Not a single command was needed but these dogs organised themselves and spread out into a line the moved forward through the undergrowth. A pheasant was flushed and the gun was fired. All the dogs came back and lined up next to the 'leader' who then went out to retrieve.
I have no clue if that is some kind of hard coded genetics or a passed on memory but it was freaky to watch.

  • Oh and @No-Quarter I wouldn't be too concerned until it reaches this stage

I have no doubt both your house and your work are haunted. So many old buildings with shady pasts in England. When I was about 8, and my brother 5, we stayed with our Grandparents in Camberley for a couple of nights. Both nights at about 2AM the door to our bedroom started shaking violently, as if there was someone on the other side shaking it. Lasted for a few minutes then stopped. Needless to say we were scared out of our minds and never wanted to stay there again.

  • When I was 10 I was staying at a friends place and I woke in the morning (probably a little after dawn) to see my mates mum on her knees praying looking out the bedroom window which had its curtains open. I thought this was super strange since they weren't religious, it was then that I noticed her clothing was super olden day and that it wasn't in fact my mates mum. She kind of started turning her head towards me and then sort of disappeared in front of me. I hid under the blankets fully freaked out. When I eventually came out there was no sign of her.

Of course now I put it down to early morning groggyness and maybe early morning light coming through the window tricking my brain. Back then though I slept for a full week with my light on.

  • Yea, i also had a mate whose mum i used to imagine on her knees in my bedroom. Sadly that also never happened...

Fark me. I couldn't handle that shit. I used to get shocking nightmares when I was about that age. If I'd experienced that I would have turned out like this guy:

  • So I think we're all in agreement. Religion is still complete bullshit but Ghosts absolutely do exist, and sometimes kids either see them or are possessed by them. Glad we've got this cleared up.

  • @No-Quarter also there is the distinct possibility your house is built on some sort of ancient burial ground

  • If he sees a unicorn that shits our rainbows it's probably the ghost of gollum

  • I have had something lock me in a room, from the side I was on when I was only one in the room more than once (in an old school house that has since been demolished) and have also seen a UFO...the former, has happened to other people, the latter, me and 3 mates saw it, and we were all sober...we all tried to explain each away, with no real plausible answers (although I find it easier to believe in UFO's than the former....)

  • This could be the greatest thread of all time..

  • @Virgil nah, got a long, long way to go toward getting up with the Guns and Strippers thread!

@taniwharugby I also had the former and more than once! One particular time I remember was at a gay bar in palmy back in my uni days. I was just a small town lad new to the big city of Palmy North. I went into town with some girls who wanted to go to the gay bar to dance, well being the super progressive lefty hippy I was I figured this would be the perfect chance to show off my liberalness and no doubt impress one of these lasses to bed (spoiler: virginity remained for a good couple more years..). Anyway we were in this bar and I was quietly freaking out having had zero interaction with the gay world up to this point. After a few beers it became time to venture to the bathrooms, fortunately a male mate of equal awkwardness also had to go so we figured we'd be safer as a pair.

We walked in and headed to the urinal trying to be cool calm and collected, got as far as washing our hands when the worlds campest man walks in puts his arms around us an asks us 'how are you two sweet things?'. Our coolness left in a hurry. We stuttered something like "ah good thanks...how are you?" as we made a break for the exit. In panic I grabbed the the door handle and pulled but it wouldn't budge! My mate tried the same, no success! "Oh my god, what strange gay voodoo was this!?" It was at this point the camp man with a huge smile on his face pointed to the door that wasn't actually the cleaners cupboard and said "I think that's the one you're after guys"..Actually thinking about it, every time I have found myself locked in a room it has involved multiple beers.

So tell us more of this UFO experience

Without doubt. A Kiwi friend of mine that had lived in Exeter for over twenty years, went back to NZ and met and married some poor bloke. They came over to visit and I took him on a pub crawl. I showed him the skeleton of a Roman soldier (apparently) which had been found in the foundations of an old pub and had been on display for about 50 years. He found this very weird. What I found strange was that she had never heard of it despite living in the city for so long - he saw it before she did!

  • See, we are clever in NZ. If a building is likely to have spookies we just burn it down.

    Isn't that right Mr Bain?

  • I went to a seminar about this kind of thing once and the lecturer asked if anyone had ever seen a ghost, a couple of people put up their hands . He asked how close they got and one of them said he actually touched it, the lecturer asked him where he touched it and he said "all over I had sex with it". The lecturer was astounded and called the guy up the front to tell the gathering about sex with a ghost, unfortunately they guy said "ghost? I thought you said goat".
