TV Serieseseses

  • I thought it was great as well and I hope they do the next books as well.

As an aside I did enjoy the TV adaptation of Sharpe as well, although budgets and production values make it look a little amateur by today's standards

By all accounts the second series is either in production or has been green-lighted. Can't remember which.

  • I haven't had a lot of time to watch much recently but am slowly getting through The Man in the High Castle.

My only criticism is that in its aim for realism the dialogue can be a bit mumbly and muffled at times. An old fella like me keeps having to rewind scenes when I realise I missed something.

The rest of the production is amazing. The details and thought put into sets etc quite incredible. Feels very real and certainly not fantasy. I think the most amazing scenes are the simple household ones where behaviors are quite normal but at the same time different (neighbours greeting each other with cheery 'Sieg Heils' as if they are saying 'howdy')

  • Anyone watching Jessica Jones on Netflix?

Pretty good stuff I much prefer it to daredevil.

I was reluctant to watch this (getting to 'superhero' overload - although have bailed on Arrow so far this year) but I watched the 1st ep,and am intrigued enough to watch a few more at least.

  • That showing here on TV anywhere?

No, I had to find it on the internet. Pop me a PM if you want me to give you a copy

What source are you using to watch this one, sounds interesting

  • What source are you using to watch this one, sounds interesting

It's an Amazon production. So officially through whatever way they distribute.

    Unofficially? I can't say.

Edit: Only comes with a sub to Amazon Prime so whether that is available or geoblocked I don't know. The Amazon.com US site has a sign up for 1 month trial of Amazon prime for free which includes movies and TV

  • Was on YouTube last night watching trailer after trailer of new TV. Shannara, Colony, Man In The High Castle, Vikings (fuck yes), Heroes Reborn, Westworld... Where the fuck am I going to find time for all this?

You can ditch Heroes Reborn from you list for starters

  • Still wouldn't help. That is a lot of TV.

Most of it isn't new though. It has been released already and over a period of time. You just need to keep up. 😉

    • Only 4 months too Game of Thrones..

Just to add to your misery, if you like Vikings, you will like the Last Kingdom, and as you like boobies, you will enjoy the first few eps of Narcos

I know your pain - on my current too watch list is the latest series of: Rectified, Orange is the New Black, The Leftovers, The Walking Dead & Fear of the Walking Dead - and that's before I start any new shows.

I'm quite keen to see Man In The High Castle of the new shows.

As for Jessica Jones I'm not sure if I'll watch it due to a number of reasons: 1. I'm a bit superhero-ed out, 2. I thought Daredevil was hugely overrated so wonder if this will be the same, 3. I don't really like Kirsten Ritter (she's like Nicole Kidman to me where I really struggle to watch her).

I havent bothered with Rectify since S1...I gave up on OITNB latest series, was just a bit meh....

  • Watched The Man in The High Castle this weekend, was pretty good I thought.  Certainly worth a watch.  Have not read the book.

ATTN Battlestar Galactica nerds.  Your new sci-fi show to gush about premiered last night on the SyFy Channel in the US.  It is called The Expanse, and the 1st episode was great.  Awesome production values, excellent special affects, and pretty engrossing so far, with easy to learn characters/story.  Second episode airs in about 2 hours, then once a week on Tues in the US.  Again, never read the book

  • Alright Episode 3 and 4 of The Expanse are available on OnDemand or online on Syfy.com.  Couldn't help myself and watched them.  Episode 4 was freaking amazing.  The special effects were on point, great space battle, best I have seen since BSG.  Only bummer is I now have to wait 3 weeks till ep 5

Seriously, if you like sci-fi, watch this.  I also enjoyed Killjoys on the same network earlier this year.

    3 weeks? Bugger.

  • For those in NZ that are interested, this is airing on 'The Zone' (which is one of the basic sky channels and I assume something to do with MTV??) on the 5th of Jan, TR Jnr & I read The Sword of Shannara earlier this year so he is looking forward to it as well.

Thanks to whoever suggested Jessica Jones too, I thought I was all 'heroed' out and wasnt gonna watch it, but am enjoying it, have 2 eps to go, like the odd reference to The Avengers in it as well. I see they are making another series with JJ, Luke Cage (the big indestructible black guy who JJ actually marries in the Marvel world) and Daredevil.

Has co-incided with me getting TR Jnr the Marvel superheroes and villains encyclopedia for Christmas (I had been reading it before giving it to him...)

  • No, I had to find it on the internet. Pop me a PM if you want me to give you a copy

Very much enjoying The Last Kingdom. Shame there is only 8 episodes.

Reminds me of how fucking dumb and impatient Uhtred can be, but the series now parallels my own working life: I have little no tact or patience for politics, but do what I do well enough to keep me around 🙂

  • I spent part of my holiday break watching all ten episodes of the new Netflix series "The Making of a Murder." correction, "Making A Murderer."

It's a single piece in ten hour-long installments. Probably (almost certainly) the most insane documentary I've ever watched. If you like a good murder mystery with roller-coaster twists & turns, be sure to check it out, understanding in a truth-is-stranger-than-fiction way that if it was a drama you wouldn't believe any of it. And it might -- just might -- make you question the legal system and motivation of rogue corrupt police forces

My brother put me on to that and also pointed me in the direction of a reddit discussion on it. Certainly a disturbing individual and case.

Have been binge watching Vikings after enough people told me it was good. Do recommend. Think Game of Thrones with less T&A and dragons, and more stabby stabby and intrigue.

  • Anyone else watched discovery turbo? Quite liking gas monkey garage and fantomworks, that guy on chasing classic cars is pretty boring though . The American chopper series is about three years old and cut short due to Paul sr abusing his wife , google tells me Pauly jr has been very successful since he parted ways with his dad .

  • am about 4 eps into The Man in the High Castle, liking it.

Yeah, I just recently watched it, on a whim - it wasn't in my list of stuff I want to watch but Rusty's mention of it peaked my interest. Good show as I like a decent alternate history. I do find that the stakes don't seem that high at times - or at least they don't seem as high to the characters as they should.

Just started watching Fear of the Walking Dead - I assume you've all probably discussed this in the thread but The Walking Dead franchise don't do themselves any favours when it comes to addressing claims that they don't like black people. One disappears after the first couple of episodes and the other turns out to be a dodgy dealer. Meanwhile they have 4 hispanic characters, a Maori character, and a half Maori/Hispanic character who looks indian to cover other ethnic bases. I'm on the 4th episode now, it's a bit so so, but I assume like the original it will get better as it develops.

Was having a chat about this the other day, one of the best post apocalyptic stories I reckon is the stand . King points out the geeks , tech heads etc will naturally gravitate to Flagg because he offers them protection and purpose . Curtis character is like that, I'm going to be interested to see what he does when he realised the rugs been pulled out from under him for good. It's a very different show to twd though, I liked it and the black character you have yet to meet is pretty cool. I hope he bucks the trend and lives for a while.

  • Do we actually know old what's his face is playing a Maori in FTWD? I don't recall a reference to it in the series.

  • His character is Travis Manawa, and I think there was a reference to NZ and/or Maori in there early on.

I liked FTWD, especially the first couple of eps when shit started to hit the fan, but like others, how relaxed everyone was about a lot of it wasn't right.

Cliff Curtis said in an interview how stoked he was that they wanted him to play a Maori .

  • Cheers. Obviously I missed those references and didn't pick up on his last name 🙂

  • Cliff Curtis is a Maori? I thought he was a South American Arab

  • Holy shit Mr Robot is so fucking good. One episode to go

  • Holy shit Mr Robot is so fucking good. One episode to go

3 episodes in and I'm a bit underwhelmed, started watching Show Me A Hero instead but will finish Mr Robot when I'm done.

  • The third series of Endeavour (The prequel to Inspector Morse) has arrived. The first episode was a bit too convoluted but the acting, mood and attention to period detail was great.

  • I'm late to the party with Fargo but I'm hooked. I was reticent to watch this on account of Billy Bob Thornton is far from being my favourite actor and Martin Freeman usually plays, well Martin Freeman. But Billy Bob is great in this and Freeman is not quite so samey. The rest of the cast are just great too and the writing is bloody good although a bizarre storyline.

    Highly recommended.

  • Fargo season one is really good. I didn't care for the next season. Especially the knock-off Tarantino character "Mike Milligan".

Thank you. Forewarned. Ms Cato No2 has also dissed series 2.

  • yeah I had heard some average reviews of S2, not to mention there is no continuation anyway as I think it is set about 30 years before S1?

  • I thought S2 was great, and all the people I know who have watched it (in the real world) thought so to - watch the first couple of episodes for yourself Cato to see.

Because of the tone of it I reckon you should have a bit of time between watching it and the original (kind of like how you'd be best to watch Paul Thomas Anderson films with gaps if his style could annoy you).

TR: It's a prequel with the Dad who runs the diner as one of the main characters. The main policewoman is a character (albeit a minor one as she's a young child).

FOTWD (SPOILERS): Good to know that the writers of FOTWD are carrying on with the stupidity from TWD. Lets leave the city gates open as we leave, then lets let loose a horde of zombies that kill numbers of people all so we can save 3 people. I have half an hour to go in the last episode.

  • If it has McShane and Olyphant as Swearengen and Bullock, it'll be great!
