@Victor-Meldrew yeah, guess it just looked too "golden" in colour for what I've seen in pics of sparrowhawk - but just found this of a juvenile. It definitely had the sparrowhawk tail IIRC.

@MiketheSnow Not funny. Mrs Cato insists on feeding the birds out in our back yard so we get a few sparrows and the like spilling seed all over the place and then the fucking pigeons come strutting around eating up the spillage and shitting on all the cars.
Net position here is that I am paying for birds to shit on my cars and then paying the local Polish guys to wash it off.
So. Not funny.
Probably killing off the birds anyway.

Awesome stuff you see on the balcony...
Female Kestrel by the look of it.

We're not 100% sure what it was TBH. Resident avian expert, Mrs M, thought the banding on the tail feathers looked more Sparrowhawk than Kestrel. If it is a Kestrel, it was poss. a juvenile. As you say, looks to be female.
Other small possibility is it was a migrating Merlin. Which would be awesome.

Not really awesome as such but mother natures power is...8 weeks ago we were at the tail end of the worst drought in decades, last nights rain described as a 1 in 500 year event.
Whangarei Dam got to 100% capacity after a significant downpour on Wednesday.
Then we got more rain last night.
Here’s a mind blowing fact. The Hatea River at Whareora Road peaked at over 500 cubic meters of water per second at 10pm last night. That’s half a million litres per second!
To put this in comparison, the Huka Falls near Taupo is flowing at 200cu/m/s and the average flow for the whole Waikato river is 340cu/m/s.Anyone that's been the Whangarei, this is the Riverside BP last night

@taniwharugby sitting up on our hill looking at Ngunguru estuary, looking very high but I don't think it's going to flood the village at high tide. Fingers crossed
-
@Machpants seems very isolated pockets of flooding in town, with Rathbone Street flooding, Porowini Ave under water last night, but I spoke to a few clients this morning in Finlayson St, Lower Dent, Reyburn, Lower Cameron St and the Cafes in the Basin are all ok.

@MiketheSnow We are all going to hell for laughing at that. I even know where they are and he has they same fucked up sense of humour as everybody else around there - like my father in law.
