  • And they've re-signed JG-B. I'm wondering whether they're going to re-sign James Marshall and Fletcher Smith, too.

And do they already know what BB is going to do and has that influenced their decision to re-sign JG-B or decisions regarding Marshall and Smith?

I also wonder whether McClutchie is in the mix somehow; or will be, if he has a good M10 Cup season?

  • Oh man JGB got renewed.

  • @Stargazer Crusaders may need a First Five if Hunt moves to the Landers chance for McClutchie or Smith ?

  • @Chris From a player development perspective, it would be great if the Crusaders sign McClutchie. He's like a younger, inexperienced version of Mo'unga at the moment with a lot of potential that just needs to be developed. He'd be able to learn so much from RM, probably more than from BB, who's an entirely different player - both in style and physique and who may not even be there (next year).

From a Magpies supporter perspective, I don't really care where he goes, as long as he gets plenty of opportunity to become the best player he can be - and that includes game time (and the Canes aren't usually very good at giving all their prospects game time). That will then benefit the Bay as well.

  • @Stargazer May not need to let anyone go considering Beauden will most likely have a year off. McClutchie will just come in for him I would say.

  • @Canes4life Yeah, possibly, but I prefer longer term thinking and what's best for the development of McClutchie as a player. He can't learn anything from BB if BB isn't there.

  • @Stargazer doesn't matter, we have the King in our coaching lineup. 😃

  • @Stargazer Crusaders through Philpott,Dagg and a few other do have a strong connection with the Bay so I am sure they are watching McClutchie.

  • @Chris Arggghhhhh, don't mention Philpott to a Magpies supporter on the Fern. That name is still giving us nightmares! And Philpott is also the one who left McClutchie out of the NZU20 squad for the JWC this year! 😠

  • Squad so far for 2020: If we can get both Barretts, Walker-Leawere and a couple solid props signed up in addition to the below, we could be looking pretty solid next year with very little impact from the post WC exodus.

    Signed:

    • Xavier Numia
    • Fraser Armstrong
    • Alex Fidow
    • Dane Coles
    • Asafo Aumua
    • Ricky Riccitelli
    • Liam Mitchell
    • James Blackwell
    • Kane Le'aupepe
    • Reed Prinsep
    • Ardie Savea
    • Devan Flanders
    • Du Plessis Kirifi
    • Gareth Evans
    • TJ Perenara
    • Jackson Garden-Bachop
    • Vince Aso
    • Wes Goosen
    • Ngani Laumape
    • Billy Proctor
    • Salesi Rayasi
    • Ben Lam
    • Jonah Lowe
    • Chase Tiatia
    • Danny Toala

  • @Canes4life

    • Vaea Fifita

  • @Stargazer Why do you think Canterbury got rid of him

Some solid @Nepia bait there, he'll be along shortly to defend Philpott.

  • Please please please don’t re-sign May or Eves, I wonder if they’ll resign HBC for another year considering how he’s had like two bench appearances this year would rather have him then Prinsep.

  • This post is deleted!

  • @mikey07 May & Eves need to follow Toomaga Allen out the door. We need some experience though so Toby Smith has to be re-signed IMO, also isn't as old as I thought he was. Only 30.

  • So Scrafton has signed for the Canes according to JK on the Breakdown. Good to see we are signing bigger guys for next year - just need to re-sign IWL.

  • @Canes4life Do we get him this season?

    Pretty pleeeeeeeeeeease

    I rate him, good signing

  • @Machpants From what I've seen against the Canes and last week against the Chiefs he looked solid. I think he was probably one of the best for the Blues last week so they will be annoyed at seeing him go. Good to see we are looking outside our catchment area, now we just need to get a couple more experienced props and we will have a good foundation for next year.

  • Dane Coles and Gareth Evans both playing club rugby in Wellington this week.

  • @Canes4life Great news, although I must admit that it's a bit disappointing that Evans plays club rugby in Wellington instead of Havelock North.

  • They are probably lining him up for the South Africa trip so he will have to be in Wellington so he can fly out with the Canes on Sunday.

  • @Canes4life Yeah, that makes sense!

  • @Stargazer Former NZ Warrior, Charlie Gubb, in there.

  • @Dice Yeah, he has been playing for MSP since the beginning of the season.

  • Maybe I’ve been out of the loop for too long. I try to keep up with the new names etc but I am finding it hard to watch the canes this season. The WC year has meant anything but consistent selection and I understand the perceived need for that. But most of the games have looked like preseason games. Fuck all crowd. So bugger all atmosphere. Not a lot of top draw play and as good as the Jags have been this year there was no fucken way we should have lost to that team.

I dunno may six years in the bogan Mecca that is the Gold Coast I’m just too far removed. Honestly I think they just look shit. But so do all the other NZ teams, Crusaders aside. And I don’t think my living in OZ means I’ve suddenly developed a dislike of NZ rugby...

  • The Hurricanes squad to tour South Africa is:

    Forwards

    James Blackwell
    Kane Le'aupepe
    Isaia Walker-Leawere
    Ardie Savea
    Gareth Evans
    Vaea Fifita
    Reed Prinsep
    Du'Plessis Kirifi

    Backs
    TJ Perenara
    Richard Judd
    Beauden Barrett
    James Marshall
    Peter Umaga-Jensen
    Ngani Laumape
    Matt Proctor
    Wes Goosen
    Jordie Barrett
    Ben Lam
    Chase Tiatia

HURRICANES SQUAD NAMED TO TOUR SOUTH AFRICA

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has named a 27-man squad to tour South Africa for their Investec Super Rugby matches against the Sharks and Lions.

The squad features the return of club captain Dane Coles and experienced loose forward Gareth Evans who have been sidelined with calf injuries.

Coles last featured for the Hurricanes in their round five match against the Chiefs while Evans has not played since the round two match against the Crusaders.

The pair played club rugby in Wellington yesterday and satisfied Plumtree that they were ready to make the two-match tour.

"We have been patient with both players through their rehab and we think that is really going to benefit us at the back of of this season," he said.

The touring squad features a 16-forward, 11-back split and also sees the return of first five-eighth Beauden Barrett who missed the Hurricanes loss to the Jaguares due to the second of his All Black rest weeks.

The Hurricanes returned to work on Friday following the second of their byes and Plumtree was pleased with the attitude as they prepare to travel to the republic.

"We were obviously disappointed with the result against the Jaguares after what had been a good four week period for us," he said.

"The next two matches are vital for us in South Africa as we push for a home quarterfinal but we know the size of the challenge against two quality sides who are also fighting really hard for places at the top of their conference."

That’s a much better excuse for not watching Rugby than I have

    Some injury updates:

    • Fidow isn't playing atm due to fitness related issues from his shoulder injury.
    • Ben May had minor surgery on his knee but should be okay for the playoffs.
    • Fraser Armstrong has a minor back complaint.
    • Coles is still having trouble with the calf, so much so the Canes made him get a scan on his back.
    • Chase Tiatia has a hamstring injury.

Shame about Fidow. Potentially the dynamic prop that the Canes need. Like The Tongan Bear - a big part of the Canes winning squad - but also injury prone. Coles. It looks like time has caught up with him. Hope not though

Both Xavier Numia and Alex Fidow featured on the bench for Oriental yesterday. Strange that Numia was named as reserve hooker and Fidow as reserve looshead. Must have been a teamsheet mistake.

  • @Canes4life Is Charles Gubb (No. 6 for MSP) the former Warrior?

  • @Chris-B Yeah I believe so.

  • Highlights of DC's return.

  • Love the first fives' Jerry Collins tribute haircut!

  • I feel sorry for Nehe Milner-Skudder; he has no luck.

    From his instagram:

Halfway through what's been a challenging year. There was plenty to work towards and look forward too on the Rugby to-do list but unfortunately due to ongoing issues with my shoulder from a prior surgery not going as well we'd hoped, it was the best decision to go under the knife again to get it sorted. I've been through "a few" injuries but this has easily been the toughest one - both physically and mentally. However, I'm not ready to give up anytime soon, love a good challenge and have so much love and support around me #Grateful 🙌 Obviously I'm guttered at how the start of the year has panned out but as the great MLK once said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." ✊ Much love to you all ❤
