NZR vs Mark Reason
-
Some good comments in that piece by Brent Impey:
He also makes a number of recommendations which to those of us at NZR just go to prove he has done little research on how our organisation works
We are doing the very work Reason asks for
Reason has no concept of the differences between the amateur and professional game
It is so easy for a columnist to make claims which are general without any specifics or substantiation.
I don't expect any apology or correction, as it would mean nothing coming from Mr Reason.

Reason will be happy. NZR has fed the troll. These people require controversy to survive, it's the fuel for their fire. I honestly virtually never read any of his articles, and I haven't read this one either. Along with Wynne Gray, who is more smug than a bug in a rug, I just avoid.
Speaking of journalists, Marc Hinton has put out some pure garbage this week, with all the sycophantic junk. Cliche after cliche.
And I for one have no problem with Garcès being the ref. He's top class and frankly we sound Irish or Welsh if we keep whining about the refs.

@billy-tell agree about Wynn’s Grey,should stay retired..!

He drives me nuts
- Can't stand his style
- He is not very expert for someone who styles himself as an expert
I might be wrong, but he sort faded out of being the Herald's main rugby writer in somewhat mysterious circumstances, I seem to recall an article which reading between the lines suggested he wasn't great at getting on with his colleagues.
Every country has their journalists who seem to drool on every word put out by their national coach etc, Knowler and Hinton spring to mind, and then the whole "subplot glowing feud" storyline about Shields and the coaches etc, just spare us.
I don't think I've ever been so confident about a game at Twickenham - no doubt we'll now lose - but honestly England currently have no major scrum threat, a passable lineout, no great maul, not major backrow threats, no great box-kicker, a rugby league second-five, and a somewhat dodgy choice at 15 (Daly is a better winger). If we get as much territory and possession as SA, it'll be at least a 15 point win.

In general I agree with that principal. Although I think it's worth pushing back on basic factual errors/lies if that bad information gets repeated by others
I think Impey got the tone right. Point by point on the factual errors while never taking Reason seriously

Gregor Paul has rapidly declined in his quality.
He wrote a peice this week about how the AB coaches 'can't stand Brad Shields' and I was listening to RS yesterday and they had him on and asked him about it and if that was how the AB coaches really felt and he said it wasnt....twat.
The standard of our 'journalism' in NZ has deteriorated so badly.
Funnily, as many know, I am no fan of Rattue, however I have listened to him a few times on the radio and he comes across much better than his click bait ramblings.
Many of the punters on here could write better articles than we see regularly in our major media outlets.
-
@billy-tell Gray just sounds arrogant when I have heard him on the radio..and you are right,I have real doubts about his actual knowledge and the same now applies to Gregor Paul..Another arrogant twat..!
-
Journalism in general has descended into
- Start with sensational story title. Need not be an accurate summary of the content of the article or be factual
- Write a bunch of your own opinions not essentially based in fact
- Cut and paste other tidbits from old articles.
They might have all worked for woman's day

I for one am super pleased Impey has replied.
After having been defamed both as an organisation and as individuals within it he should stand up and defend the Union, colleagues and staff.
I don't think for a second it has fed the troll. IMO it has deflated Reasons position, and hopefully his ego.
Should see more push back on bullshit that is published.

Yes, normally I would agree about the feeding the troll. But this sort of comprehensive dismantling ruins his reputation, and he actually cares about that.

Any game with a Tier 1 nation where they show up physically is likely to be tight. That's why RWC knockout games are so hard - physicaly commitment and attitude goes such a long way. It takes some magic to break down those defences, and I'm really looking forward to it.

They kept quiet through the early 2000s while the uk press accused us of destroying pacific island rugby and poaching , the only reason they stopped writing articles about it was when their own teams started getting brown too.
I don’t think doing nothing is an option when a scumbag is spreading misinformation about you . That was a great response from Impey . I don’t know how Reason has a career, there’s nothing particularly special about his writing and he’s not particularly clever either .
-
He has a career because enraged kiwis click on his articles and then post angry comments below his articles.
Clicks = advertising revenue.

Wynne Gray has had the dream life. Covering EVERY AB's test live since 1866 or whatever it was. In some ways thats even better than being an AB. None of this 3 years of glory and then slink back to the corners. Every AB test. Best seat in the house. Year after year. I'd guess after about 15 years he'd just take it for granted, only natural he'd become incredibly spoiled.
Add to that dream life of being a resident ferner....
