I will never understand why these scumbags get name suppression

Survives 6 weeks in South America, doesn’t make it through a few days in NZ
The piece of shit should be made to do his time in some old run down prison in the UK. We will pick up the tab but at least thete he can be subjected to abuse and the daily chore of getting through each day alive.. -

I agree but if it means some scumbag lawyer can’t get them off on a technicality it’s probably worth it.

If I'd been charged with murder, I'd want name suppression too. At least till I was found guilty...

You'd like to think that if the cops had enough to charge that they are pretty sure. I guess they have been wrong before
-
pretty fucked up all round, gutting for the family!
Apparently 6 weeks on a tour group in SA, then alone to NZ and here a week...is speculation they met on Tinder, which makes you wonder if something dodgy but accidental went down and dude panicked and here we are?
Cant imagine what it'd be like, you can see the cop involved is pretty emotional about it too.
-
@canefan that story makes me sick. Murdered and dumped in bushes. Cases like this really make me wish we had the death penalty. It's hard to see what the reason is for name suppression, the police seem very confident and made the arrest very fast.

It seems to have moved very quickly. The speed at which they found the body in a rural area straight after a 26 year old started 'helping police with their enquiries' suggests a strong chance they're on the right track.
Agree with the thoughts on the death penalty. Not sure what on earth goes on in peoples brains when they start the night with a date and finish the night with murder - but it's not the sort of mind that should be free for a very, very long time...
-
I saw some idiot woman on Twitter say she was ashamed to be a New Zealander because of this murder. Shit like that irritates the fuck out of me also.
I'm not taking responsibility for the hideous acts of others, thanks very much. This is not a 'NZ thing'. It is entirely on the shoulders of the 26-year old perp.

Jesus, that’s a scary attitude. Police are just people, and make mistakes or have vendettas. You can ruin someone’s life with a false allegation.
Something I wish all the MeTo witch-hunts would understand.

Something I wish all the MeTo witch-hunts would understand.I have been doing my civic duty sitting on a Jury today, and man, some of the minor detail the defence is honing in on to try and poke holes in the police reports/notes is pathetic.
I know what they are trying to achieve but to me it seems like they are trying to confuse us with all the legal side of things so we start doubting the evidence in front of our eyes.

Good on you for paying attention. In the unlikely event I'm called upon to sit in judgement, I'll make up my mind as soon as I see them.
-
I'm 0-5 when it comes to getting on a jury. When I lived in Palmy I think the pool of jurors was so poor that my name got drawn 6 times in 5 years - I went to 3 of them and then got excluded from the other ones because I know I had no hope of selection being often the only person there under 40, and only ever one or two of any type of Polynesian descent.
-
@nepia I went through a period where I was called up at least 2 times a year for about 5 or 6 years (never once got called to sit on the jury though) then one time, I decided not to turn up, was 5 years before I got called up again.
I know this aint PC, but many of those I saw attending court here today (and my work is across the road from the courthouse, so see many of the comings and goings, odd scuffle) are usually Maori, yet the vast majority of those who turn up for Jury service are not, therefore, the majority of those that selected will also not be Maori so not really tried by a Jury of thier peers.
I do find it amusing how when selecting a Jury, this must be about the only time you allowed to profile someone based on sex, race, religion, age or whatever other demographic they choose based on how you look and the information they have on you.
-
@taniwharugby Yeah, that was what I was alluding too. One time there was me and a PI women and we weren't getting close to being on the jury (me due to my job moreso that how I look).
I would have liked to have been called up once, but one time one of my mates got a horrific rape case and another mate of mine was involved in an (equally horrific) child abuse case and a couple of years later I wound up being pretty good friends with one of the victims of that case. Anyway, point being, TBH I'm glad I didn't have to sit through a case like that.
-
@nepia yeah one case I was called for, but didnt get on was a historical sex abise case of a dude that was 70odd with kids dating back into the 70s and 80s.
I did not like the fact they read every single charge with a bit of detail as to the charge, then you dont get on but you know too much about it already, something I will never forget.
Next one involved my old neighbours (I have mentioned them a fair bit on here before in various threads...) and I can tell you I certainly had some pre-conceived ideas about the charges I heard, again, in far too much detail.
Fortunately the one I am on now, 2 days tops and wont be too emotionally taxing and wont be one that'll bother me greatly regardless of the result.
-
@taniwharugby Jesus, that's rough. Also weird you got called up for your (TSF famouse) neighbours trial too.
The rape case I mentioned went for over three weeks so really wasn't pleasant for my friend.

On the road much of today and listening to talk back and Yes, while the lynch mob are all baying for blood sometimes you need to be a bit sensible about things like this. If he's not guilty having his name out there can potentially fuck him for life.

It seems the judge agrees with you and declined suppression. However the defence indicated that they intend to appeal so I gather the judge is obliged to give interim suppression just in case the appeal is successful.
The Herald was reporting yesterday that the police were so keen to get the car so they could use the GPS to track where the car went, which along with tracking his cellphone would explain why they were able to home in in the Waitakeres. So the guy may not have surrendered any info at all.

@taniwharugby I've only sat on a jury once in London decades ago
It did result in a full page editorial piece in the Express about the failure of the jury system that focussed mainly on me as a new Zealand barrack room lawyer who swayed the others to my opinion and as a result civilisation as we knew it was threatened
It was clearly a result of the one (bitter rascist old trout) who was the only juror in favour of convicting a young black man of purse snatching spilling her guts to the paper about how I moved the jury from 3not guilties to 11
The interesting thing the article didn't mention was that we (old hag and I) had sat together in a jury the previous week where after we listened to the prosecution the judge through the case out because the police admitted that they manufactured evidence lied and denied the defendants their civil rights in order to meet their arrest targets.
That didn't make it into the Express article. I wish I'd kept it. Rather flattering artists depiction of me in full oratorical flow. Although I have never had a beard or a corduroy jacket
Like you I despair of the judicial system except like me Churchill's description of democracy it's the least bad system.
