@Nepia but you aint a co-ordinated 11 yr old, clearly bought up on GTA~
Yeah, I was brought up on the Fountain:
-
@Nepia family friends had this...oddly, now that I look back, I musta been a shade too young at the time (~12) to realise that the fact they had a 12 year old daughter, a 14 yr old daughter and 16yr twins was a better reason to visit....

@Nepia my man!! that was our first console. Loved the 'pacman' knock off. haha lets just use exactly the same design but use spiders. $5 on a game of plane battle bro, holy shit my brother and I sunk a lot of time on that!
I went down a rabbit hole a couple of years ago to find out what the system was - because it's actually 1970s tech released in NZ in the 80s, and because of the import restrictions then it couldn't be imported as it's actual product name. Imagine if the PS4 had to be called something completely different in NZ?
It was a clone of this IIRC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VC_4000

Yeah, when there's family friends when you're young there's that cross over point from just hanging out and playing to these are girls and they're hot.
-
@Nepia I think it was when they moved to Perth a year or so later I cottoned onto the fact they were hot and I missed my shot (cos I had one!!)...although from what I have heard, one of the daughters went completely off the rails, prostitution, drugs etc....
this was my first console

You may have dodged a bullet on that one then.
Oh, you had one of the fancy ones after deregulation - I didn't own another one until the PS1.
But I used to hire the Master System from the video store and go crazy once a month.
-
@taniwharugby said in Alternative needed from the absolute crap of stuff.co.nz:
@Nepia she was one of the twins, so was outta my league anyway at that age haha
Me and my mates had some all night sessions playing Alex The Kid!
Never heard of Alex the Kid actually.
I think the Sega Saturn used to have Red Alert so I used to practice my tactics before playing my mates on computer - but that was probably mid 90s, just before the PS1 came out I guess.

Was that the blatant Mario Brothers rip-off?
-
@taniwharugby said in Alternative needed from the absolute crap of stuff.co.nz:
@Kruse dont think so, but TBH no idea....plenty of games were similar back then.
Yeah - remember that... definitely a Mario Bros rip-off. But yeah, to be fair, not much imagination in the industry back in that day.
-
Now that this has become a distinct thread... on the topic the mod has named, not console games, but C64...
- Commando - remember being able to "clock" that about 6 times in a single game
- Midnight Resistance - was THE game when I was 10 or so
- Airwolf
- Choplifter
Then along came the Amiga, and...
- F/A 18 Interceptor
- Pirates
- Syndicate
And I have no idea of anybody who ever actually paid for a legal version of any of those.
-
Alex the Kid was the nuts. Still remember the music
First "console" was one of these bad boys. Playing Tomb of Tarabash. On a fucking tape

Did anyone used to play Battle Isle in the early 90s?
We'd sneak off from school to my mates place (whose Dad was the guidance counsellor at school) and play two on two at lunch time. Two on two meant for of us would sit around the tiny computer whispering away to out teammate as we go.
Was a cracking game.

Amiga 500? Hell of a game if its the one I'm thinking of.

Yeah, turned based with split screens.
Another turn based game that I love (but falls out of the classic period) is Combat Mission.
You pick they battlefield, then pick the configuration/men/weaponry etc that you want in the battle and your opponent does the same, then you input your moves and it's all on.
It's fairly realistic in that you can use MG's to suppress squads and negatively impact their morale etc. One major issue with it is that if you get certain buildings first you can control things so I'd always select at least one truck or APC to get a squad to strategic points as quick as possible.
Edit: In the Afrika Corps version you can play as NZ.
-
Ha. Classic sequeway fellas....
First game I remember is Panzar assault. Took about half an hour to load ( on a tape ) and part of the fun was whether or not the fucken game would actually work or not.
....and the end result if it did was a block ( tank ) shooting other blocks.
rad.
-
I started on that original console, too. Was still working last time I tried it a few years ago at my parents place. Epic tank and plane wars (one turn in, shoot at the right time, game over) with that. Then I went up market to Vic 20, and Omega Race was so fkn hard I spent ages on it.
-
Bloody amusing look at this and reminiscing but you know what?
Modern isn't always better. A mate got Red Dead Redemption two, I house sat for him and played and I'm a massive western and GTA fan.
Despite all the things you can do and the massive world and amazing graphics I was bored fucken shitless.

I barely play games and if I do my kids kick my arse - except for the Street Fighter games. I choose Ken or Sagat and fuck them right up.

I used to get my arse kicked using Zangif and Dahlsin. Was embarrassing. Then my brother and I managed to get hold of a 2nd hand Megadrive and we spent a good year saving up for a copy of SS2. Went ballistic after that. Played it at an arcade last year and nearly went the whole way. Pity it wasn't 1992.
Anyone play GI Joe on C64? That was cool. Remember they had that decathlon game that absolutely farked up the joystick.

My son's fuck my shit up on Star Wars battlefront 2. It's actually embarrassing and to make it worse they make the condescending remarks like 'Ooooo you actually did ok Dad, you nearly killed me'
fluffybunnies.
Yeah, I experienced the same when I logged on to school my 11 year old. He just force pushed my off the cloud city for fun, like 100 times.

Princess Leia is way too tough. My efforts clumsily trying to kill her with Darth Vader were cringeworthy.
I was better with Boba Fett. that jetpack is awesome for getting out of trouble but ultimately it was still an inept man vs highly skilled boys....

It triggers me nearly as much as Rose, Admiral Holdo and DJ.

Now I'm triggered.
Was inspired by this thread and dusted off the xbox360. Just finished SFIV with Ken. You fight some gimp called Seth at the end who is much harder than M. Bisen. Farken hardookened the shit out of him!
