The Folau Factor

  • Know of a guy who did that, ended up marrying my high school crush and made her hard core christian too.

  • @Virgil and become 'experts' on what the bible means and how to interpret it. Often tied to narrower and more literal interpretation in my (limited) experience.

  • Small sample size, but regular church going Christian girls were awesome to date.

It’s like they try to find loopholes to get around the no sex before marriage thing

  • @taniwharugby said in Aussie Rugby in general:

    @Virgil

    Wtf is that!

They also stupidly rush into marriage so they can root like rabbits. Not realising the person they married after 3 months of ‘dating’ is a shit root and doesn’t tidy up after themself.

God says no sex before marriage but it’s perfectly fine to marry a stranger just so you can fuck without going to hell. Yes I’ve had a fair few mates, relatives and ex flat mates that were/are christians

Had a few Mormon guys play rugby at our club - Islanders, pakeha, whatever. They get married at 21, pregnant almost straight away, and somehow breed like crazy bastards.

Generally a happy lot, tho one or two of them are angry rugby players.

  • First Robbie Deans, then Mike Cron now Maria... izzy.jpg

  • @Magpie_in_aus Daryl Gibson playing a supporting cast role also

  • @taniwharugby said in Aussie Rugby in general:

    @Magpie_in_aus Cron?

Yeah Cron went across the ditch to “help” their scrum issues.

  • @taniwharugby I thought Cron had deflected. Must have a made up post by either the beetota advocate or Izzy Folou

  • @Virgil Born agains are seriously fucking scary. They definitely don't tend to be the 'love one another' and 'judge not lest ye be judged' types.

Yup exactly, it’s like they are trying to cram as much bible into their lives in as little amount of time as possible. They tend to go way overboard. Have to wonder how much of an influence his awful wife is too

  • @Virgil @Mokey new testament is for happy clappers. Old Testament is where its at.

I just don’t like her, her eyes are too close together. She’s allowed to live in oz yet get picked for the ferns and she’s married to a bigoted homophobe. What’s to like about her...

  • @jegga Maria used to be one of my favourite Ferns. She pretty much defines a confidence player. She will take a long distance shot and if it goes in she will start landing them from everywhere. Miss a couple from under the posts and she crumbles.

She always seemed to have time for her supporters and be aware of he sponsor obligations. She was also attractive enough in a pretty sort of way - enough to be a poster girl for NZ Netball at times. When Folau first came out with his mediaeval nonsense last year she publically supported him. At which time I decided she'd been corrupted by an awful Aussie and dismissed her as being an oxygen thief.

  • Interesting hearing Raelene Castle stress that the game is inclusive regardless of race, gender, sexuality and religious beliefs.

There's a pretty big asterisk next to the religion part at the moment. Might need to re-think whether they include it in that? The teachings of Christianity haven't exactly been friendly to gays, and Islam in its current for is about 100 times worse.

I've never been that comfortable including religion in there, as they are just ideas that should be challenged, and I would hope freedom of speech laws would cover religious people anyway from a legal perspective.

That said, I am pretty strongly against hate speech laws as well, as they just come down to whether people are offended or not which is entirely subjective and impossible to define in any meaningful way. We should not be restricting speech unless it is directly inciting violence or defaming someone.

I would imagine my dreams of playing for the Australian women's rugby team would be discriminated against on the basis of at least two of those (along with talent).

I wonder how long is attitude to gays would stay the same if she bought home one of the tidier ferns for a ménage a trois?

My guess is about a nanosecond.

Interesting that this religion and these views have been rightly pummelled and labelled medieval nonsense, yet not a single comment about bigotry or Christianityphobia. Does that only apply to a certain other religion? I hope certain people can see the hypocrisy in all this. Bad ideas, customs and beliefs need to be challenged regardless of their origins.

Nonsense. Do a Hannah Mouncey, identify as a woman and lace up your boots.

I'd imagine divorce is a deadly sin as well.

The focus is on his "anti-gay rant" but in reality anything other than breathing seems to be a sin in this guy's world.

  • @Rancid-Schnitzel yeah but our only Muslim rugby player is coming out and saying 'as long as your good to others, I like you' not 'burn in hell faggot' So bringing up other religions and anti Christian stuff not entirely relevant. If SBW posts about the "Qur’an (4:16) demands unspecified punishment for men guilty of lewdness together unless they repent", then he'd lose his job too. Btw that's the only mention of homosexually being forbidden in the Qur'an, all the fundamentalist stuff from the Muslim world is based on their culture more than scripture. Your also need four eye witnesses before you could be punished, tricky one that!

  • @Machpants I don’t think a reporter has actually asked SBW his opinion about gays etc , considering he hangs out with a preacher that says they are worse than animals I suspect the NZRU might have a hand in making sure that those questions aren’t being asked.

That's not true at all, the fundamentalist stuff comes from not just the Koran but the Hadith as well. In this context the Hadith is most important as that is what Sharia Law is based on, which defines the punishment for homosexuals.

Don't want to derail the thread as this is not about Islam, but the "it's culture not religion" argument is badly flawed and also goes some way to excusing that religion of the scorn and criticism it deserves.

Also on SBW, he lost a BMW contract for his public support of an Imam that believes gays are worse than animals. So he's been burnt already, guess he has learnt to stay quiet.

  • Yeah I don't agree with his, or any religion, they should all be banned. But foolau is not being fired because he's a bigoted religious nutter, but because he broke social media rules he signed up, and incidentally accepted millions of filthy lucre from gay supporting organisations and businesses, for. SBW may also be a bigoted religious nutter, but he still had his Jocelyn because he's filtering his employers rules he signed up to. Maybe after he tries he'll go full issues Daesh on us, I dunno having met him at welly airport, but he could.

  • @No-Quarter true I was ignoring the hadith which is hearsay, but your right, I'm in error for the entire book

yeah has been interesting every article about it has lead with his homophobia comment, not looking at the fact I am scared shitless that I am going to hell for drinking beersies, fornicating (havent repented) and Atheism..although the latter has me most concerned, cos if his belief I am going to hell is stronger than my one of not caring about that aspect, does that mean I will be going to this hell place?

  • @taniwharugby Don't worry all the cool people are there.

And some pretty shitty ones, admittedly

  • @Machpants not to mention the fact that if there is a Hell, then there must be a heavan, but you arent allowed to enjoy a cold beer or a good single malt there? Fuck that!

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Criticism of a certain other religion is very often met with accusations of bigotry and racism (for a religion?) and such criticism is even referred to as a phobia. Yet none of those accusations have been levelled during this pile on of Folau's religion. It's an absurd double standard. We should never be accused of bigotry for calling out bad ideas.

  • @Machpants said in Aussie Rugby in general:

Well I wouldn't ban religions as that would go against free speech, which is a critical part of our society - most importantly for minorities. I have no issues with people seeking meaning in their lives through faith - that's a very human trait. Science has dispelled a lot of the medieval myths associated with religion but it does not address spirituality at all which is why they persist. I guess what I'm advocating for is reform - keep the good spiritual stuff and chuck out the medieval nonsense.

Also don't forget Qantas isn't a gay supporting organisation, as they cut deals with state-owned Airlines whose governments have severe punishments for gays. They are all about the bottom line, don't be fooled by their stance on social issues - they've just decided that it helps with their brand which means more money.
