Are you watching the death rattle of all authentic sports?

I feel greatly saddened and wanted to express this. Not sure others feel the same way but....
After almost 38 years of passionate (and i mean passionate) sports following of Rugby, league, cricket and boxing etc I feel we are now watching the death of true competitive sports.
-
Politics has fully taken over now.
-
Freedom of speech no longer exists
-
Money dictates the ruling opinion
This rugby world cup potentially could have a host of world-class athletes sitting on ths sidelines and a lot of people not tuning in because of peoples beliefs. To believe in and to believe not.
The end of true sport is almost here.
Why? Because of politics.
End of the day everyone is different and everyone should be allowed freedom of speech and belief. Whether you agree with their opinions is up to you.
An atheist, a Christian, a Satanist, a Muslim, a capitalist, a socialist should all be welcome to play and all welcome to have their own opinions they can express. We dont have to agree with them.
Isn't that normal life anyhow?
Politics is using sports to enforce cultural identity. The day this was allowed was the day true sports died.
The days of the best playing the best are about to leave us. What we will be left with is an inferior product.
And not true sport.
What we are left with is what we are conditioned to be allowed to watch.
Politics should have no place in sport.
Its not about right or wrong because they are clearly subjective.
Enjoy what true fair sport you have left now because its almost over.
The last 38 years were a pleasure.

I think what you're seeing is the realities of professional sport. Money availability is dictated by the public perception, so sponsors are now feeling obliged to move beyond the exposure their money bought to being active in how they are perceived.

Politics in sport is hardly a new thing. Just look at Hitler back in 1936 and the multiple Olympic boycotts, not to mention NZ (shamelessly) not selecting coloured players for SA tours.
But I can see how it can destroy someone's interest in watching sport. Sporting competitions should be about that - the competition. It should be a chance for people to block out whatever bullshit is happening in their lives and enjoy something that can entertain and even inspire them. I can say from personal experience that the Canes and ABs certainly did this for me. If the Barrett Brothers took a knee to the anthem or Richie started talking about global warming post match then I'd switch off. There's a time and a place and that simply isn't it.

Doom and gloom on here again. I’ll support any team that plays for Canterbury as long as I’m alive.
if anything, it's the Crusaders, Canterbury, the Melbourne Storm, The New England Patriots, The Golden State Warriors, and Man City who are fucking sports. Over-achieving fluffybunnies.
-
@jegga get amongst it bro - most of the popular games have some form of coverage - even if it's just finding a streamer that you enjoy watching (not cam girls btw). Def some ebbs and flows with games coming and going. But E-sports is getting better and better imo.

I've played computer games competitively with and against players much better and worse than me. It's interesting watching people who are genuinely good at anything you do and seeing the difference in how they do things. The same way you feel when taking the field with/ against Test players. It's like a different sport.
Oh and you can become a millionaire playing in Korea. Their rugby team is a bit shit though...
-
@antipodean look, we are all allowed our foibles, and thus there is no fucking way in the world you are ever going to get me to consider playing video games a "sport"

Darts and Chess are considered sports though aren't they ?
......and I'll never forget being hungover ( or possibly still pissed ) and turning on ESPN and seeing the spelling bee live.......it was actually fucken good viewing and I think I missed a calling cos I was playing bloody well from the living room.
-
@mariner4life ugh no fucking way bro. I'm a Starcraft 2 and strategy game junkie. Shooting games aren't my vibe. But will frequently be playing a game and have a stream or youtube vid running on the other screen. Actually I have a 2 year old so that's about 2x a week for a 15min window!
-
@antipodean that level of money has opened up across the world - still for a select pool of games but it's crazy aye. LoL and DOTA can earn you massive coin, but some of the big Twitch streamers are making shitloads without ever going to comps.

Its happening. Just look at the news everyday.
Falou is arguably the best rugby player in the world.
He won't be at the world cup likely because of his opinion,
Others will sit the tournament out to most likely.
Politics is ripping the heart out of the sport.
This is just the begining.

and I couldn't give a toss. There is always something. Always!
This will have no affect on my watching of the WC. I can't wait for the Cricket season for the Boxing day test with Aussie too.
You're just too panicky about the trivial, in my mind
-
You don't give a toss that you a robbed of watching the best sports talent in the world?
You don't give a toss that you are missing out on watching the best in the sport due to politics?
Your not a fan. Not a true one.

I am going to watch a great world cup. We lose people to injuries etc all the time. It's no real biggie.
I haven't been robbed of anything.
You are just being hysterical about something that isn't a big deal in my eyes
-
So you are saying losing some of the best athlete talent in the world from playing in a tournament supposed to feature the worlds best players isn't a big deal?
WOW. I would of thought that would have quite a negative impact.
As far as your concerned. It doesnt matter who plays as long as they wear the jersey?
This is the death of true sports for sure.

Do you like Def Leppard mate? They have a great song and album around your thoughts.
The sky shall not fall and sport will have its "ups and downs" all the time.
-
@NightmareHitter if you are freaking out, take a look at Olympics and the massive political influence over history. They are still going rather well.
I hope that helps a little
-
Many would say on form Falou has been the best player in the world the last two seasons. Once again subjective but if he was a kiwi he would be in the All Blacks.
Claims many wallabies will sit out if he is allowed to play on. And rumours starting to circulate that a few pacific island players will sit out the world cup to if he is not allowed to play.
-
@NightmareHitter said in Are you watching the death rattle of all authentic sports?:
Are the olympics still going well though?
Women who are men winning 100m sprint titles cant be good?
They still seem pretty popular.
You are just getting your knickers in a twist over an isolated incident and think that one thing means that it will happen forever.

There's a big difference between being the best player in the world and being in the All Blacks. Even if he was in the All Blacks he wouldn't even be amongst the top 2 outside backs in the team (Rieko, Ben Smith). That's a long way from arguably the best player in the world.
-
Claims and rumours do not equal "most likely".

Ben Smith cough cough cough get off the meth.
Ben smith maybe 4 years ago. Falou way ahead of Smith.
Rieko is faster not better than Falou.
Falou all time best try scorer in super rugby.

It happened in a high school athletics meet in the states which practically the same as the olympics .

Yeah. There are now cases of girls missing out on scholarships to men which sucks, but I can't see this getting much further - particularly at the top level. The biggest concern I have with transgender athletes isn't so much that women's sport will be ruined, its the inevitable backlash against trans people, most who have no interest in being the centre of attention, when the radical activists try and push it too far.
