Region Of Origin SR Teams
-
On the back of where I was taking the Chiefs vs Crusaders thread, how about a compilation of regional SR sides based on provincial origins? I listed around 18 players I’m pretty certain are current Crusaders from the catchment, plus another group from the region playing for other SR sides. No doubt the Blues will kill this. Here’s my Crusaders team:
15 David Havilii
14 Will Jordan
11 Solomon Alaimalo
13 Ryan Crotty
12 ALB
10 Richie Mo’unga
9 Mitchell Drummond
8 Elliott Dixon
7 Matt Todd
6 Ethan Blackadder
5 Brodie Retallick
4 Luke Romano
3 Owen Franks
2 Ash Dixon
1 Joe MoodyBench
Tim Perry
DLB
Cupboards a little bare at hooker currently, so Brodie McAlister maybe
Quentin Strange
James Lentjes
Halfback same as hooker so maybe Connor Collins
Josh McKay
Tim BatemanA pretty handy 23 at the moment, albeit with a couple of holes. No doubt at times in the past it may have been stronger, and also weaker (mid to late 90s for example). Plenty of outside back talent at the moment with Ngani Punivai and Leicester Fainga’anuku waiting in the wings and open side flankers to burn (Billy Harmon as well). Depth at 10 is light and I have McKay covering here rather than picking Fletcher Smith, compared to the days of Mehrts, DC, Slade, Taylor and even Brett and Bleyendaal.

Hurricanes
1 Atu Moli
2 Codie Taylor/ Dane Coles
3 Jeff To'omaga-Allan
4 Isaia Walker-Leawere
5 Sam Whitelock
6 Liam Squire / Luke Whitelock
7 Ardie Savea
8 Gareth Evans
9 Aaron Smith / TJ Perenara
10 Otere Black
11 George Bridge
12 Ngane Laumape
13 Rob Thompson
14 Matt Proctor
15 Nehe Milner-SkudderBench:
16 Dane Coles / Codie Taylor, with Asafo Aumua waiting in the stands; James Parsons will be there, too)
17 Kane Hames / Xavier Numia / Donald Brighouse
18 Alex Fidow
19 Jackson Hemopo / Michael Allardice (James Blackwell and Kane Le'aupepe in the stands)
20 Luke Whitelock / Liam Squire/ Marino Mikaele-Tu'u (Liam Mitchell in the stands)
21 TJ Perenara / Aaron Smith / Brad Weber (Kayne Hammington sitting in the stands)
22 Stephen Perofeta / Tiaan Falcon (Brett Cameron and JGB sitting in the stands)
23 Ma'a Nonu / the Umaga-Jensen twins / Jonah Lowe / Salesi Rayasi / Billy Proctor / Sam McNicolMany variations in the outside backs are possible; also some swaps possible in the midfield.
FYI, Moli is from Gisborne, Perofeta from Whanganui. Allardice is from Taihape (so Wanganui).
No doubt, I forgot a few players.Several young hookers and props with Mitre 10 Cup experience coming up in the Bay (Kereru-Symes, Devery / Farrell, Rakete-Stones, Tavita-Metcalfe); first five-eighth McClutchie; now if the Canes would sign and develop them, there could be more depth in those positions in the future ... Of course, Danny Toala and Devan Flanders have already been signed.
Also a possibility: Vilimoni Koroi (Whanganui)

- Aidan Ross
- Nathan Harris
- Nepo Laulala
- Lachlan Boshier (because I couldn't think of another lock)
- Scott Barrett
- Luke Jacobson
- Sam Cane
- Kieran Read (if he counts, signed for Counties but originally for Canterbury)
- Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi
- Beauden Barrett
- Waisake Naholo
- Sonny Bill Williams
- Sean Wainui (naturally a midfielder)
- Sevu Reece
- Jordie Barrett
Reserves:
16. Ricky Riccitelli
17. Ayden Johnstone
18. Josh Iosefa-Scott
19. Laghlan McWhannell
20. Mitchell Brown
21. Augustine Pulu
22. Beaver Donald
23. Etene Nanai-SeturoLocks were a hard one. Also midfielders was a bit of a mish.

- Sam Cane
- Kieran Read
- Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi
- Beauden Barrett
- Sevu Reece
- Teihorangi Walden
- Sean Wainui
- Waisake Naholo
- Jordie Barrett
Off the top of my head could be wrong on some and missed others
-
@Yeetyaah It's about "origin", so not where they are currently playing NPC or SR. I've gone with where players were born, or if that was unclear, where they went to school.
Kieran Read is from Papakura, not Canterbury.
Nepo Laulala wasn't born in NZ, so can't be in any NZ line-up.
Same for Naholo and Sevu Reece, who were born in Fiji.Looked it up, and Sean Wainui is from Whatatutu (north of Gisborne), so the Canes can claim him.
SBW is from Auckland, you'll have to take him off the list, too.Riccitelli was born in South Africa.
@ARHS ALB and James Tucker are from Canterbury
@Yeah-The-Boys Moli isn't from the Chiefs catchment
-
Let's try again.
- Ayden Johnstone
- Nathan Harris
- Josh Iosefa-Scott
- Lachlan Boshier
- Scott Barrett
- Luke Jacobson
- Sam Cane
- Kieran Read
- Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi
- Beauden Barrett
- Teihorangi Walden
- Jordie Barrett
Reserves:
16. Liam Coltman
17. Reuben O'Neill
18.
19. Laghlan McWhannell
20. Mitchell Brown
21. Augustine Pulu
22. Beaver Donald
23. Etene Nanai-SeturoEdit: Removed Sevu Reece, Waisake Naholo, Nepo Laulala, Aidan Ross, Ricky Riccitelli and Sean Wainui.
Thought about Gatland at 12 and Walden at 13 but meh. Cant think of any more.

@shark Probably Mitch Hunt as reserve first five - or Marty Banks - or even James Marshall, or Fletcher Smith. We've got lots of Tasman first fives!
No idea who Connor Collins is, so Jack Grooby at halfback.
My bad! The next kid to come through the NZ U20s, ex CBHS, will add to the depth too!

@ARHS said in Region Of Origin SR Teams:
Anton Lienert-Brown and Tom Franklin would fill those slots. James Tucker and Kane Leaupepe also contenders. Atu Moli and Toby Smith might go in as props and Solomon Alaimano as back 3. Pretty strong combo.
Someone hasn't quite got the gist of the criteria. Or maybe i wasnt clear.
ALB is from chch and went to CBHS
Tucker and Alaimalo also Cantabs, both out of St Bede's. -
OK so this is MY silly team, so here are MY qualification rules.
Born in a region and went to HS in the same region is an easy qualification, and I'd say most guys would fall into this criteria.
Born overseas but NZ qualified? Then its where they went to school.
Born overseas, schooled overseas but NZ qualified? Then it's about the province first represented.
The hardest ones would be if a guy was born in, say, Auckland, and then moved elsewhere with his family at say, 15. Personally I'd say they qualify for wherever they ended up after several years of HS in the region followed by provincial representation. The likes of Siate Tokolahi and D McKenzie who won one year scholarships to Christchurch high schools, i dont count as Cantabs. Case by case with these i guess so let the debate flow in instances like this. -
