    Apollo 11 launched.

Got to rate this as probably Man/Mankind's greatest achievement.

    The questions for me are:

    • are we heading back there?
    • when?
    • what will the reasons be that drive us there?

    My answers currently:

    • yes
    • who knows
    • money, as opposed to a ghlobal worldeide pisding competition that drove the first shot

    Discuss.

They need to do a moon base as a test for any Mars colonisation. Having a base close like that lets rescue missions be an option.

Apparantly it's also easier to launch to Mars from the Moon.

Reasons for doing it? If we don't become a multi-planetary species, and eventually multi-solar system too, then we have end date for the human species based on the conditions of Earth and the Sun.

So it's not a choice, it's a requirement long term.

Short term, if we could mine the asteroid belt and gases of Jupiter (for example) we exponetially increase the natural resources available for use.

NASA heading back to Moon soon, and this time to stay

NASA is accelerating plans to return Americans to the Moon, and this time, the US space agency says it will be there to stay.

Apparently Trump wants a landing by 2024 now. It will involve R&D from the private sector. In other news India's unmanned mission to the moon was scrubbed right before launch

SpaceX is on target for that sort of mission for the Falcon Heavy and Starship.

@Kirwan yeah and it's 100% they've got a shitload of ideas and dev going on for launching from the moon and/or moon orbit. Really keen to hear how they'll make it more efficient by generating fuel and other expendables on the moon, rather than having to ship everything up for assembly etc. That level of set up will really free the shackles and accelerate our space exploration.

There's no carbon on the moon. Very unlikely to able to setup a sustainable colony there.

Come on guys, get creative. This could be the best "discussion over beers" thread in ages.

We need something like the moon landing to focus the human spirit. Don't listen to the naysayers who say it's a waste of money, we need aspirations

Have a read about Operation Paperclip. The American effort in the space race with Russia was in part due to a number Nazi scientists who were involved in the development of the V2 rocket and then secretly moved to the US after WWII.

The majority of roads around North Harbour Industrial Estate in Albany are named after the space programme including William Pickering Drive but also Beatrice Tilsey, Apollo, Orbit, Constellation, Vega, Antares, Triton, Canaveral. Speaking to the developer they were originally going to be fruit to reflect the areas orcharding history but obviously a space nut got involved and full credit to them! Much rather work in Triton than Nashi

    @Rancid-Schnitzel Owned pretty badly here;

"USSR and post-Soviet Russia combined? 4 women astronauts since 1963. The USA? Almost 50, including all these firsts: mother, Chinese-born woman, payload specialist, married couple, black woman, hispanic woman, shuttle pilot and commander, ISS commander, and teacher. Also oldest. "

Yep, but since when has the NYT allowed facts to get in the way of a good virtue signal. Should also be noted that the USSR never actually put anyone on the moon.

Yeah those whacky misunderstood soviets , this podcast gives a rundown on how awful their space program was . Basically the cosmonaut was given a craft so badly made he refused to go up in it and he was told if he didn’t they’d make his friend Gagarin go up instead . He died cursing them over the radio and there’s a picture of the worst open casket funeral ever in the link.

@jegga the article you posted has a link to an update that refutes / questions a lot of the original.

The US were similarly cowboy-ish. I've just finished listening to 13 minutes to the moon and multiples sources are quoted as saying Apollo1 should never have flown although ironically the disaster was the reality check the program needed

I listened to a podcast last year from someone from the former Soviet union and the original story was the one they broadcast. Being the Soviet union its hard to know the exact truth from the article and the updates and a lot of it on both sides is word of mouth .

Here's the link to the podcast, its a decent rundown of the space race from the Russian side. He also does some interesting stuff about Russian elections and life in the Soviet union. http://theeasternborder.lv/podcast/episode-12-the-red-space-race/

Recorded a Ch4 docu on the moon landings last night, just watched it. Oh simply breath taking, how I wish I had been alive back then! It brought a tear to my eye, all of the world watching an amazing achievement together... I wish I could witness something of that magnitude. Nowadays when all the world's attention is on one thing it is terror related, and filtered through 100 different channels first.
Super grateful for all we have tech wise but I am such an old soul I long for a simpler time, a summer of love... maybe get my first real six-string, buy it at the five-and-dime, I'd play it 'til my fingers bled....
