    As best of my knowledge
Maori tried selling land to settlers, price agreed. Everyone happy.
Govt went nah... we will take it instead for nothing. So they stole the land off the Maori for nada
Eventually the govt then on sold it to some farmers.
Many years went by- Claim was made under the Treaty, and was pat of a settlement, wedges of cash exchanged.
Fletchers bought it and decided to build, consulted with local tribes, and decided to mnake part of land a reserve and also build a few hundred homes for local Maori on land.
Local Maori leadership happy, fletchers happy
Law student starts agitating about how it is all unfair , I think she loses her case.
So an occupation is organised, against the wishes of local Maori.

That’s the take I got too, the protesters mostly aren’t from the local I will either from what I understand .

Also there’s a Harawira racially abusing immigrants too.

Quite different from the story being spun by the media......

It’s turning into an interesting political mess , National and Winston opposed to the occupation , Jacinda as usual kicking the can down the road to give her time to try and figure out the most politically expedient path to take and the greens sticking it to the man and supporting the occupation.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback That's as concise an explanation as I've seen. So the law student lady is presumably happy to throw the settling iwi under the bus? Is this a power play between two iwi or between her and the government and she simply doesn't give a toss if the local iwi are collateral damage?

Cutting to the chase, I can't imagine the Labour government openly backing Fletchers against the agitators, so what is the end game - all treaty settlements in jeopardy of being reopened?

Hard to believe one person can trash the years of work it takes to make a settlement happen.

The protest leader is the Niece of one of the local Iwi leaders.

So has she got her own axe to grind or was her uncle against the deal?

@Baron-Silas-Greenback Like a lot of tribal politics it's not as straightforward as that. There seems to be some division within the hapu. Could easily be an inter-generational thing as well.

Tainui could also be involved if they chose to as they had a big presence in the area.

It is worth noting that non Maori interests were / are against the development of the land for historic cultural / archaeological reasons as well. Not meaning to be flippant but apparently its the oldest kumara garden in NZ.

I can see why St Cindy is steering well clear. It does show up her "I implore Maori to call us out when we let them down and I promise to take action" for the BS soundbite it was. However no government would want to set a precedent . I can see John Key wriggling just as much.

To give the protest lead some credit she's been occupying the land for two years so clearly is committed. Talks well, media savvy. Poor Fletchers.

She stopped development on the site. Apparently that wasn't enough for the protesters who lead a march to her electorate office.

Did Fletchers know of this potential controversy when they bought the land?
