The Best of RWC - 2015 The Final
-
In consultation with the illustrious Mr @Duluth we've decided that this match deserves special attention. Hence a dedicated thread.
It was the last RWC match played before the next one.
And completes our Mitchell like Journey through the World Cup ages.
Enjoy.

I’ve really enjoyed these.
Also I’ve been surprised by how shit my memory is of the last three tournaments.
I wrote most of the early ones from memory only.
As it wore on I had to rely on YouTube.
Not sure if that is an indication of the enthusiasm of youth or my fading ability to remember stuff.
Something something @dogmeat colonoscopy ...

Great work @booboo
There were AB waves during that game that is most memorable to me. After the card and a flurry by OZ, I still felt we would keep going and the leadership of McCaw combined with our bench impact and Dan’s boot ensured we were never going to lose that game no matter what the Aussies threw at us.
One of the more enjoyable games to watch because the blood pressure never skyrocketed 😀

By way of contrast, how much fun was 2011?

2011 was an emotional watch for me for personal reasons more than anything.
I was nervous and given what had transpired during the tournament I remember a distinct feeling that something would happen to us during the match.

2011 was a horrible experience, I've never even watched a replay!
I just watched a 30min replay of the 2015 final on an Emirates flight. Really surprised by how little I remembered NMS being so involved. He had so many touches in the 1st half, so many shimmies to break the gain line. I miss that guy.

My wife produced a child on the Friday night, and the final was Sunday. Emotionally by halftime I had nothing left - a tournament where we were in prime drop zone during knockouts, dominant team, but 24 years between world cups and DC and the list of 10s that dropped.
Incredible emotional release when we got there. Walking out of the stadium and heading downtown I'v never seen so many people in downtown Auckland so late. Was an incredible experience

For me the best bits of the RWC Final win were Kieran Read, who was somewhere north of cloud 13, chatting to the TV commentators and then rushing off as he was late for the celebratory haka.
And Nigel Owens taking the time to console the losing Wobblie players. Pure class.

Don't be too hard on yourself. There have only been 3 world cups so you can't expect your memory to be too clear from things that happened 32 years ago....

After winning 2 in a row, younger and newer fans can't begin to appreciate the size of the monkey that was on our backs after 24 futile years. At the final whistle I felt nothing but relief it was done. 2015 was a much more enjoyable final because we always seemed in control

I think it's also hard to forget the feeling the week leading up to the final. One would think given the size of the monkey because of 99, 03, 07 that there was simply no way that the public would go into a knockout game overconfident, especially against France.
Then we flogged them in the pool game, they lost to Tonga, reports were that they had locked the coach out of the team room the week of the final... while the ABs had just played the game of their life against Australia. There very much was a sense of anticipation in the days leading up to the game that the duck was about to be broken...
... cut to sitting in the east stand around the 60th minute up by one seeing Ellis and Donald running the show with a very, very, very sick feeling developing.

That's a great clip, really captures the angst of the game.
Henry and Raelene had genuine plans to leave the country if we had lost that game, such was the weight of it and their expectation of blame to come.

I was watching 2011 with Mrs Meldrew - she was seriously concerned for my health.
But I knew we were OK when The Duck, who had just came on, marched up to McCaw at a penalty and said "give me the f*cking ball". A seriously average AB 10 he may have been, but he had balls of steel in that game.

He practiced goal kicks close to the actual spot pregame. He was right in front of us. Made those too

The Ref saw it go over, the Touch judges saw it go over, Thierry Dusautoir said it went over.
But Basil from Berkhamstead, commenting in The Daily Telegraph, tells us it was a fix as he heard from his best mate's cousin's girlfriend's elder sister that she was told by a bloke in a pub in Swansea the he'd heard from his late uncle's brother-in-law's workmate who's read it on the internet somewhere that the IRB had decided to give the Final to NZ.
Personally, I blame the Illuminati.

McCaw gave him the ultimate accolade in his book: "He's a helluva good bugger"

So she basically heard it from someone on TSF then? Was Jaguares a member then?/
