So I am 5 weeks out from starting a 13 month sabbatical - moving the family to Bali, going to (try and) learn to surf, get fit, and also plan to read some books.

      Any suggestions are very welcome

Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. Only two of the three out so far, but outstanding reads. One of the few books I have no hesitation recommending to a wide range of people; well written, grabs you, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Are you looking a for audiobooks, kindle ?

I just finished the madness of crowds by Douglas Murray which to be simultaneously hilarious and depressing. Well worth a read .

American Buffalo by Stephen Rinnella was a cool read , it’s a bit similar to Salt and Cod if you like that genre of history books .

                            @NTA you sure that's a legit prediction?

The article seems to have no sources quoted, and others online giving it a bit of side eye. I'm stoked if it's real, but it's been nearly 10 years, so a year or two longer would no longer surprise me

Anyone read other books by Andy Weir? they author of "the Martian"

I loved the film so read the book and very much enjoyed it, did he just hot one rich vein or are his other books good too?

I recommend The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. He's more known for horror, but this was a cracker first fantasy. Crude, funny, but deep. First of a series but standalone thankfully

Will give it a look after I finish the current queue:

Shogun - never got around to reading this previously but was prompted by someone on twitter. She's a slow burn. About half way through.

I remember playing a game based on this for my C64 back in the 80s. Never understood it.

Leviathan Falls - last book in The Expanse. Sort of thinking I should let the current season of the show on Prime finish before I hop into it.

Made no difference to me, I finished just before it started. It's so many books ahead, and so much has changed it might as well be different characters.

As @Kirwan says above - the books and TV show part company early in the piece. Otherwise it would be packing 9 seasons and barely holding at the seams.

Both are excellent as standalone ventures.

Not bad at all. Not so much an autobiography as just a series of stories from.his.life told in order.

He's in many ways an excitable child who never had to grow up.

Just finished reading After the Tampa by Abbas Nazari. Well worth a read, given the nature of the topics traversed it isn't always an easy read, but thought provoking.

A much better review than I can write here, including:

Four doors down from the Nazaris in Ballantyne Ave were the Mo’ungas, and Abbas and his brothers quickly became mates with Richie, now an All Black.

Mo’unga remembers them all playing touch rugby, barefooted, down the cul-de-sac, with language barriers never standing in the way of the fun they had.

“The thing that amazes me about Abbas and his family was, when they got to Christchurch, it took Abbas probably two years before he spoke better English than me, and was five-times smarter than me, and you could see the way he applied himself – Abbas was always at the library, reading.

“Him and his family, they were all on a mission when they landed.”
All Black Richie Mo’unga grew up a few doors away from Abbas Nazari in Christchurch, and the pair would join the street’s other kids playing rugby, barefoot on the road. “I’m sure he’d still back himself to put me on my back, now.”

Mo’unga says Abbas was a decent rugby player, though they didn’t face each other after primary school.

“Thankfully. Coz he could put me on my backside. He’s a big boy. You see what he’s been through, I think, he’s scared of nothing.”

Abbas played 1st XV rugby, trialled for Canterbury representative teams, and became a devoted Crusaders fan.

Nowhere near enough good songs of it to justify two CD's (old school). Not even listened to a new album since.

The rest is varying shades of meh. I've seen them live and thr book.kinda explains why I was less impressed than most people, including themselves, seem to be with their act.

Final book of The Expanse series. Without a doubt my favourite sci-fi series.

The 6-season TV series departs from it in a number of ways but it a good companion watch, and how I started into the books.

                                                                                    Amos is the fucking man.

There’s nine books, and a few novellas.

First book is called Leviathan Wakes by James Corey. Pretty entertaining books, with a little more realistic physics, good action and fun mysteries.

Pretty easy reads, with lots of quotable lines.

been keeping an eye on Amazon as already had a backlog of books, just picked Leviathan Wakes up for $5 👍🏻
