US C-130 FIRE bomber crashed South of Canberra.
3 American crew dead.
Christ that is sad.
I know they get paid, and I know it is their job, but I have a huge amount of respect for humans that do that sort of work to help others.
(Let alone the volunteers who di it just for live)

So my cousin and hubby (and multitudinous cats) in Canberra are having to evacuate due to an out of control fire burning towards their place.
Weather looks to be high 30s, winds up to 40km/r, very low humidity.
Reported as being the most dangerous fire weather in Canberra since the 2003 fire storm.
Just when you thought the worst was over ...

and, in a nice contrast, the monsoon finally arrived in FNQ, and it's wet as fuck.

I have watched this video elsewhere - these fellas are going about their preparation, a warning call comes in and they cease what they are doing and move quickly to get into their vehicles and away. The wind borne sparks start appearing and, just 1 minute 30 seconds after the warning call, the flames arrive at the spot previously occupied by their parked ute.
The ute had to get out of the way of the reversing truck, so it reversed 50 metres down the road - didn't waste time doing a U turn. The truck was able to reverse then depart driving forward. Had the truck driver stalled it during the manouver, and taken 20 seconds to re-start, they would have been firemen flambé.
On a couple of occasions over the years I have seen advancing fires from perhaps 500 metres distance and the most remarkable features are the noise (like a steam engine at full throttle) and the speed with which the fire front travels. There is no way a man could outrun it.
Bloody dangerous stuff eh!?

That's fucking insane

Hottest Feb day in Cairns on record yesterday. The monsoon turned up for 2 days, a few weeks ago. No real rain since, and the heat is just building day on day. Fuck this summer.

Humidity?
Whilst we got lucky with the rain over the last week or so filling up the dams - we were on Level 2 restrictions and drying out - it's brought the humidity something awful. Also means I have to mow the lawns for the first time in months, in 34 degrees, and dripping humidity.
First world problems.

Yeah, it's a bit humid...
The "feels like" just ticked over 40 again. No rain in sight. It's Feb in the tropics and I am considering putting the sprinklers on.

2020 comes full circle.
Bush fire season in QLD and we're doing our best to burn the entirety of Fraser Island.
Been burning for 6 weeks after an illegal campfire got out of control, and it's totalled 30% of the island so far. Expected to burn for weeks yet. A couple of the resorts may come under threat too.
Bit of an easterly currently blowing the smoke directly onto our part of town and we're in the midst of a horrible smog.
Has been enough smoke to see on the BOM rain radar (but not this morning).

@booboo shit really? I hadn't heard that
was blindly hoping the record rain we had last weekend would help dampen things for a while...at least we're all use to wearing masks....hahahah..
I was just about to post the same thing, how the fck didn't I know about this??!!
"Thanks" for sharing @booboo

We haven't had decent rain for a while. Not really since March. Not that you'd expect it over winter here. Spring/early summer seems to be our long hot dry period.
Being promised a La Ninã but not here yet. Will no doubt arrive just in time for Christmas.

And a lot of rain in winter = more growth to burn in summer, so....

Disaster guy at Council has sent around an update (being on Secondment here I get them too). Won't reproduce in full, but in summary:
Have hit 50% of island. Turning to shit Saturday night with northerly change which is going to fuck everything over.
Kingfisher Bay and Happy Valley resorts preparing to evacuate.
Fire not going to be put out without significant rain so they're trying to divert it around communities. Smoke we're getting is from backburning.

Panoramic photo from this morning sitting at the western end of town looking west to east across the Bay.
Smoke haze hanging across the island (starting way way up beyond left of picture past the tree), few plumes of smoke as you work north/left to south/right then big plumes where fire is burning on two fronts.
Wind northerly so smoke heading towards Sunny Coast and Brissy.
Photo doesn't do it justice.
