Magpies 2020

  • @taniwharugby No doubt, the Landers lose valuable experience and leadership if they sub off Aaron, but it's just not good from a player welfare perspective to let him play 80 minutes every single week. Besides, they signed Fakatava to have a replacement for Smith in the long-term. How is Fakatava to become that replacement if he never plays? I know he's only 20, but they have to start giving him game time at some point and trust him to do a good job. I guess they'll look at where things are at during each game and will sub Smith off when either the game can't be won anymore, or when it's in the bag.

After a breakout season in 2020 for the Magpies Neria "Bubba" Fomai with his great step and ability to be in the right place at the right time is a fantastic addition to the Magpies midfield.

  • From HBRU Facebook:

    Preseason games
    Fri 28 August - 2.05pm - venue TBC
    Waikato v Hawke's Bay

    Fri 4 September - 2.30pm - venue TBC
    Hawke's Bay v Auckland

They called the latter game an "actual game", but not "first class". So I assume the HB Saracens or a Hawke's Bay XV will play the first game and the Magpies will play the second.

Interesting that they're playing the games in King Country province, or has Taupo rejoined us?

  • @Nepia Didn't Hawkes and Waikato play in Taupo last year or the year before? I'd say it is just a location approx. halfway for each team. A little more travel for Auckland obviously.

  • Confirmed for 2020 season:

  • Magpies have signed Kurt Baker (All Blacks Sevens/Manawatu/Taranaki/NZ Maori/Highlanders). He is playing for Tech OB tomorrow against Central.

  • @Number-10 @Magpie_in_aus Bloody hell, just when things were going along so swimmingly and then this hits us. In my case, and Magpie-in-Aus as well, it is a double whammy with him also turning out for our beloved Texans. Luckily I am not up home again until Aug 15 (v Havelock) all going well but by god this is going to be hard to accept an imposter from the 'Poo in my team! Bring back the Barracuda ASAP.

😲 Why? He's a great attacking player but why would he come to us and not the poo where he belongs? I expect our penalty/card account to increase this year.

  • @Nepia I think there's something going on in Manawatu that we don't know about. If it's true that Otere Black, and Rob Thompson have both gone to Bay of Plenty, Aaron Cruden not playing for them, and Laumape as well, and possibly Milner-Skudder then suddenly there Million dollar backline becomes $2. Kurt Baker's still a very good player who will add experience, but yes his discipline needs to be right.

  • Not really happy with this signing, but I agree with @Billsy111. When I read about the possible move of Black and Thompson, I was wondering what was going on with Manawatu. My wife even wondered whether they were going to pull out of the comp for financial reasons, but then there was the news of the signing of Alaalatoa and others, so that's not likely to happen. Really strange situation. I guess they could have signed a worse player than Baker; I wonder whether he comes in to replace McNicol? Maybe his ankle injury is so bad that he won't be available again?

  • @Stargazer Yes quite possibly that's the case. Kurt Baker does offer a really good attacking option, and adds depth. To be honest I do like the way the Bay are shaping there team.

  • Also confirmed for 2020:

  • Hawkes Bay, Counties, and Otago contending for the title?

  • @Tim And Taranaki if the Barretts are available. I think that will be the semi-finalists.

@Higgins - Tech are playing Clive on the 15th. Tech beat Havelock last Saturday.

  • @Number-10 My records look to reliably incorrect as per usual then! I shall look forward to seeing the new guy Visinia playing then, also checking up on the progress of Liam Udy Jones.

Joel Hintz returns for his second season with the Magpies after a solid 2019. As the heart of the Central Hawkes Bay premier forward pack, Hintzy brings power and strength to the tighthead side of the Magpies scrum.

  • Article in the HBT about the Kurt Baker signing.

  • Look like a bit of good old fashioned biffo in Waipuk. I would have been in my element on the sidelines down there cheering on the Texans and voicing my displeasure and disappointedness at what must have been one eyed allocations of the red cards!

I will have to re-watch the replays of last season matches to see if I agree with the comments shown below the photograph as my fading memory does not recall too much of the last sentence.

I went to the Taradale Clive game on Saturday. Visinia is HUGE! Both height and mass. He was playing 13 with Jonah Lowe at 12. Best player for Clive (returning from injury) was Josh Kaifa - all over the park, tackling everything and making some strong runs

I agree he has power and strength, that does not mean he utilizes all that when scrumming through...

  • I believe Ben May has been signed by Taranaki.

  • @Number-10 I'm surprised. I thought he was going to retire after Super Rugby? Is that his 6th province?

Phew, that might allow me to start having nightmare free sleeps this week.

Magpies Captain Ash Dixon has had an outstanding season in Super Rugby with the Highlanders and his hard edge and leadership will be hugely beneficial to the team this year. Heading into his 11th season in the Black and White jersey, Dicko looks to join an elite group of players, playing 100 games for Hawke's Bay.

  • @Stargazer What's the go with the back with a mullet that played for highlanders but has been injured for a while. One of my favourite Super Rugby players. Tough as teak for a guy not too big.

    Has he had to retire?

  • Buckman!! That's the one. What happened to him?

  • @Hooroo Do you mean Richard Buckman? As far as I know, he isn't playing club rugby. He was signed with a Japanese club, last year, and he's in NZ, but not sure whether he'll return to Japan or has retired.

  • Bryn Evans is coming home. Are we short on locks, or do we have enough good youngsters coming through? Not sure if Allardice will be available for Mitre 10 Cup, but would Bryn Evans still be good enough to replace him? Would you want him to? He's 35.

  • @Stargazer He might be 35, but all that experience would be very valuable. Can't see Bryn turning down the chance to play a season with Gareth. Adds hugely to the locking stocks.

The hard carrying Isaia Walker-Leawere will be looking forward to getting back to the Bay and continuing his great form from the 2019 Magpies season. The big Maori All Black and Hurricanes lock provides size and grunt in the Magpies engine room

Stacey Ili, a player who can play most positions in the backs has been a key part of the Magpies backline over recent seasons. A creative and gutsy player and great team man, we are delighted to have Stacey back this season.

Comment from Danny Toala under the FB post:

Stacey Ili when you back g 😂

So is he playing club rugby in Hawke's Bay, or not? Toala's comment suggest he's not. But if he isn't, where is he?

Be a great addition. Didn't he get named in some northern hemisphere team of the decade?
