New health report and TV debates highlight backlash against gender reassignment

I flatted with a Swedish chick for a little while , she was gay and hated being a woman . This was back in about 1996 , anyway she went home and about four years later she sends us a email with photos of herself dressed as a man announces her new male name that we were to use from now on . It was long enough ago for the general consensus amongst people in NZ who knew her to think “ wtf?” . As far as I know she never visited NZ again so I have no idea if it worked out .
Turns out she was just way ahead of her time , there’s been a 1500% increase in the number of reported trans teens in Sweden and double mastectomies are being done on girls as young as 14.

Between that , the highest number of grenade attacks anywhere in the world outside of a war zone and the slight chance of being stuck on public transport next to Greta Thunberg I don’t see myself visiting any time soon .

More importantly, the cost of alcohol is ridiculous. Same as most of Scandi. Prohibitively expensive. As if it isn't miserable enough up North anyway.

@Catogrande there is no such thing as prohibitively expensive alcohol. Just fucking annoyingly ruiniously expensive alcohol.

@voodoo A little pedantic but yes, you're right, going by my experience anyway...

I’ve heard that , is it massive taxes on all alcohol?

It must be. Anecdotally it would seem you pay much the same in a skanky bar as you do in a good hotel bar.

I am also told that, unsurprisingly, there is a fine tradition of home distillation.

Weird country alright. Had an AMAZING time as the only kiwi accent at Hultsfred music festival about a decade back. Incredibly sad what has happened to the country in recent years. Group think seems to be a massive issue.

I found this chat on the Rubin Report pretty illuminating on the situation they find themselves in. Seems kinda similar to Germany with perhaps some past Nazi support guilt driving some of today's horrendous decision making.

I’d say music festivals aren’t as popular as they used to be there . Mumford and Sons won’t play there anymore because immigrants like to play what they call the “ rape game “ at concerts .

The other thing Sweden has in common with Germany is an ability to keep this sort of thing out of the press .

Yeah very sad. Even talking to my mate who lives there, he knows what is going on but would never say it publicly. Tow the line. Its men that assaulted those girls, anything more specific in reporting or crime statistics would be waycist. Ban men from festivals, that will fix the issues.

Next election is 2022, will be interesting to see if the Swedish Democrats continue their rise. Polling suggests they might probably more so if they implement suggested improvements in their not-as-secret-as-it-should-be ballot.

@Catogrande 40! years ago I spent a couple of months hitching through Scandinavia. In those days lager was 5 quid a pint!!!

Nevertheless everyone was very generous. I seldom got a lift without an accompanying meal and a beer - which was awkward as your host would offer you a can and then not have one themselves as it was too fucking expensive.

There were also a reasonable number (in the 20's) of people dying every year when their backwoods stills exploded.

Ferries were packed with people getting absolutely shitfaced for the day on duty frees.
