What a headline. At what point are you fuckers going to get over yourself.
It's pretty damn impressive.
She keeps referring to the team of 5 million all the time and while it is a massive cliché, she is right. Collectively, for the most, we have all helped achieve this by supporting each other at a community level and sticking to the guidelines in terms of behaviours.
I'm a proud kiwi at the moment.
Closing the borders of a small island nation was all it took really. Australia, but for a cruise ship, had the same numbers per capita and people worked more during lockdown.
Well done NZ but being able to stop international travel so easily on an island is the major point of difference to the rest of the world " in awe".
But if it's a game of one upmanship, then bravo NZ!
And we did it, which is great.
Oh, and it took more than just closing the borders as the virus was able to spread inside the borders too... just in case you are new to Covid-19 awareness

Were we ever likely to be hit as hard as the rest of the world in particular Europe and the States.
So much about NZ is different to them, smaller population for more spread. We don’t have this desire to hug and kiss everyone we meet like the Italians and Spaniards do ( basing that on cliche opinion) we don’t smoke as much as they do either.
Plus major parts of Europe and the US ( New York especially which was hit hard) are travel hubs for the rest of the world.
I’m glad it’s ‘stamped out’ and I know we had to do something but I wonder if we should have just closed out boarders, quarantined those who came in after a certain date and let the country carry on.Part of me also thinks all those scientists, micro biologists etc live for this shit, they had their moment in the sun so to speak.
Also I hope our friends in the rest of the world get over this soon.

Credit where it’s due.
I think if you swapped political responses UK would still be fucked and NZ still doing great, as other factors are the main issue. However, it would be churlish to suggest NZ recovery wasn’t massively in part to a willing population and superb communication.
-
@MajorRage I agree to a point, I have said all along that responses almost needed to be tailored to the nation (what worked here wont necessarily work in Aus, or UK or anywhere...)
Not entirely sure NZ was willing, which is why it was the stricter lockdown to get compliance from the larger section of population, given the numbers they needed was somethign like 80% for lockdown to be effective (or am I mis-remembering??)
Our news is (or was) reporting how schools in the UK are re-opening, yet my sister-in-law says she has been told she will likely be home-schooling through to September...
-
@taniwharugby that is the difference between a media which tries to sell a country as to one which tries to destroy it.
Nz media would tell you the lockdown was followed perfectly.
Uk would tell you the opposite.
-
@Virgil 250 ICU beds and we couldn't contact trace 10 cases. That's why we went straight to Level 4 and that's why yes we could have had a very poor result if we hadn't.
95 cases from one bar in Matamata shows you don't have to living in densely populated cities for it to get away.
-
If being an island and 5m population made beating the virus so super duper easy, how come Ireland has 25k cases and over 1600 deaths?
Yes, most of the fawning over Ardern is cringeworthy, but those who want to negate the NZ sacrifice of jobs and income and home schooling and mental health effects of lockdown to work together and get the virus under control, can fuck right off.

Even those who don't support the government in general, and I count myself in that group, have to give them credit for getting us here. On Sunday I will be able to take CF Jnr to see a pro rugby game live at the stadium with no restrictions in safety. No one else can say that

Open the fucking border already. I don't care if I need a blood test - I should be just back from a long weekend in Te Aroha drinking beer and watching rugby
Nothing personal, but we just can't trust you aussie critters 😉

Fucking possums.
So what's this, a new hobby?
Nice skins, but claws too sharp for fucking I would think.
I am actually a serial killer of possums. Bloody Aussies.

Just another animal right? Skinning and butchering is a transferrable skill

Almost same, same. Possum fur does have to be "plucked" when they are "fresh".
