The 8 new cases had all returned from overseas travel. That's the common factor here.
I wonder if the next step is to test everyone arriving at the international airports, but the MoH say their limit is 1000 tests per day.
Definitely felt weird today to arrive at international airport, with all the plans ready to self iso for 2 weeks, but there is this weird interim period where you're allowed to cruise around the airport - rent a car, chat to customs, engage with the nurses. Shit, you could have grabbed coffee and a lamington if you were so inclined.
But the second you leave the airport, that's it for social contact for 14 days 🤷♂️

A comment about the effect on airline travel at the moment. A family friend just came back from the UK via Hong Kong. On the London to HK leg he was the only person in premium economy and there were 2 people in business. About 30 in economy on the flight so no problems with social distancing.

I see they have listed some flight details of the new infections. Looks like one was likely on my brothers flight. Thing is I think there have been very few if any airplane infections, apparently hospital grade aircon? Dunno for sure but they aren't like those bloody plague ships.

You would have to be pretty unlucky, touch the same surface as the infected person (assuming they aren't overtly sick and sneezing) then put your fingers in your mouth without washing or sanitizing

The thing that I struggle with is that I woke with a mildly sore throat yesterday morning and wondered if I should go to work (Sometimes snoring can give me a sore throat)
By middle of the day, no sore throat but one dry cough piqued my interest but that was also one off.
Went to Gym this morning for PT and did the best workout yet. So energy levels are excellent. Still have a annoyance in throat today but it is not sore.
Basically, I can't tell within myself if I am hyper-noticing what I would never notice before??
You are mate. I do the same thing every day. And due to the marathon training I'm smashing all fitness levels out of the park.
Yet, I wake up most nights to either cough or with a slightly sore throat and wonder if I should get out of bed or not.

@Donsteppa has to be done if these people want to see another Summer. I assume the staff will be screened big time
I've been wondering how that might work. Given the way coronavirus could spread through an aged care facility, a further risk is that most of the staff end up away sick/quarantined, and that could get even more hairy very quickly... not a great situation at all.
Exactly. My old man is 89 3/4 and my sister is at war with me and my brothers, because she has read the Ryman's releases about lockdown, testing etc.. But my dad lives at home, with my bro and his partner in flat underneath, so we argue his risk is down to them keeping virus free. Seems that will require Countdown and Pharmacy deliveries and the occasional drive in the car without getting out.
But hard judgements.

In going from 600 tests in total as of this morning, to potentially 1500 per day later this week, I wonder whether testing has been tightly rationed to some extent so far. Korea seems to have had one of the most successful approaches so far - test extensively and isolate accordingly.

I can’t see how you can stop the spread without knowing where it is. All feels like action after the horse has bolted, all this action should have been done at least a week ago.
If you don't have test capability the next best thing is to ask for suspected coronavirus patients to self isolate if they don't require hospitalization
About as effective as waving your hands. Relying on people to self isolate is hopeful at best.
It doesn't sound like much. And it won't be foolproof, far from it. But if it helps even a bit that can't be bad
It has a very substantial impact IF the population at large abides.

So in all this chaos, here is a great kiwiana story for youse all.
I'm in Day 2 of iso, and have a Countdown delivery order coming today. I tried to change the address online yesterday because we changed our accommodation after I placed the order, but couldn't do it. I spoke to the local store, and they said to call back this morning.
So I grab the phone this morning and hit the most recently called number. But I'd forgotten that we ordered fish'n'chip delivery for dinner last night, so Anna, the owner of the chippy picks up instead.
At 7am.
Oops
Anyway, I apologise, she asks who I was trying to call, we get chatting. Less than 45 minutes later she has dropped off eggs, bread, butter and
crackers to our driveway for brekkie. What a fucking legend.
It's good to be home.

That makes me very happy!!! Super Story!

Disturbing if true

Considering all our cases are imports I'd say this feels accurate
-
@canefan It is accurate. Radio NZ had a reporter arrive in Monday after the deadline and they told the same story.
NZ officials are relying on people doing the right thing. Possibly because the accuracy of airport temperature screening is considered dubious?
Where the answers given don't ring true Police follow up.

I don't have a problem with it, they are trying to limit, not stop.
Police have limited resource and I thin most people will not be dicks about it. -

In saying that though, if some foreign prick thinks they can come into the country and not abide by our 14 day isolation rule, I am very happy for them to be beaten then deported
-
@Baron-Silas-Greenback me neither- its striking a balance.
-
Apologies if this has been posted before but this is a site that people should IMO consider registering with
Basically it allows Moh (NZ and Australia) to track where people who self-report fever or cough live and therefore see where outbreaks may be occurring.
Every week they map these - down to street level. Far out there's a lot of it about (coughs and fever not necessarily C-19)
-
Hopefully this is a rapidly spreading urban myth - but I have heard from three sources in the last 30 minutes that NZ is going into lockdown from tomorrow.
I find it hard to credit TBH unless they know its out in the community and they think they've lost control.
Otherwise it sounds like an alarming and unnecessary escalation.
