  • Is rotorua and te puke gone as well? There was that one amazing ground in rotorua, in a natural bowl. Great deck on it too.

  • Bloody clubrooms. Marist had rooms on Mandeville St in Riccarton when I was at school (unsure where the home ground was) and by the time I played for them from 1997, they'd amalgamated with Albion and were at Lochee Rd, Riccarton, on a site with several fields sharing facilities with The Riccarton Club whilst also having adjoining rooms of their own. This was a great set up, and we were able to walk to our sponsor pub on Blenheim Rd as well. Latterly all that set up somehow turned to shit and now they share a bowling club on Condell Ave, Bishopdale. Unsure if they play at the adjacent fields these days, but suspect still Lochee Rd.

  • @dogmeat anything for the mighty cote?

  • @shark Yes they play at Condell Ave these days. Been there for a few years now.

Thanks for clarifying. I thought I recalled a score update cross last year on Red n Black radio that had them at Lochee Rd, but I must have been deluded, or drunk, or severely hung.

Te Puke.. I think has lost clubrooms as well.
Smallbone is awesome, but all the teams over there have changed. Hard to keep up. None of teams you played still exist

    That's so strange to think

  • @mariner4life Central folded, St Michael's folded, RBHS doesn't have a real cricket program. A team called Indians started up in B grade did well and to Prem grade, then changed to be Central Indians, some team called Geyser city us still knocking about. Taupo as well has a Prem team.
Things aren't as grim as I appear to be saying, the scene is still strong, very strong.

  • @Canes4life Even though Tana was from my hometown he never actually played for Wainui so you can have him

  • @Daffy-Jaffy Geez we really are stacked with talent over the years aren't we? We could name quite a few sides and still be strong.

  • @Bones You reckon we could get a game each out of Piri 😂

  • @JK This is too hard. Be easier if I could pick leaguies

    1 Ron Williams
    2
    3 James Afoa
4 Snow White (OK he was a LHP but he also played TH and Lock for the AB's)

A few other names I recall from back in the day are Paul Carlton (but we good for wingers), Craig Burgess (was he a 15?) and some Ward fella who I think was a loosie who was either bloody quick or offside 80% of the time but he was a machine. Room for any Mayhews? I also think Wayne Pivac played for both Northcote and Takapuna (not sure how anyone could bring themselves to do that!)

    Added Mike Harris at 10.

  • I only remember Craies as a 1st 5.

  • @ JK I was trying to pick guys who would be widely recognised rather than club stalwarts but yeah I'll through in a couple of Mayhews. Pivac did start with Cotes but.... nah...

@Bovidae you are quite right Craies was a 10 - don't know what I was thinking. He originally moved south because Fox was in his way at Akl

Cupboards pretty bare then I think!

Did Terry Wright actually play any games in the maroon and gold? (at prem level)

  • @Bones said in Pick your clubs all time team.:

    4 Sam Lousi

He would have had to lose a few kegs to rep Eastbourne's solo 85kg team.

  • @dogmeat Loteru Tolai is a good hooker. Ben Nee-Nee and Danny Drake were solid NPC locks.

  • @mikey07 there's enough of him to go around these days!

  • @Canes4life he can just be the whole tight 5 on his own.

  • Was talking to a friend over the weekend about some of these old club rugby stories, and he told me a couple of stories from North Canterbury rugby - including about a future AB.

1 A prop was pulling an opposition lock down in the lineout. The opposing prop said, "Boof, if you don't stop pulling him down, I'm going to have to hit you."

Next lineout, and Boof pulled him down - the opposing prop punched him and knocked out his front teeth. The two of them looked at the teeth on the ground. The puncher said, "Are you going to pick them up"?

Boof said, "I don't want them". And ran off.

2 A similar story of a young prop pulling down a lineout jumper, getting warned and then punched. Except, this time the guy got hit in the eye socket and his eye popped out (like the basketball guy). Guy whose eye supposedly popped out got it stitched back in and then went on to play AB rugby.

  • mate of mine tells the story of his first senior game . he was goog to be marking a waikato hooker .our all black no8 told him as the first scrum breaks up to lean to the left he repled what to be told again just go left .so first scrum goes down and finished mate leans to the left just in time for the punch from the back of the scrum to go passed his head to smack the hooker in the head.after a bit off a scrap game goes on and mate had no problems out of oppersition hooker for rest of game

  • This isn't my club but Norths (Porirua) would have a fairly handy team.

Ope Peleseuma - Centre (Wellington Lions)
Brian Lima - Utility (Auckland, Highlanders, Blues)
James O'Reilly - Hooker (Wellington Lions, Hurricanes)
Joe Apikitoa - Prop (Wellington Lions, Hawkes Bay)
Ben Power - Hooker (Hawke's Bay)
Salesi Rayasi (Wellington, Auckland, Hurricanes, NZ Sevens)

  • @ploughboy Similar to the Marty Brooke move for Auckland to target the opposition hooker.

  • @Canes4life Huh....when did Lima play? Never knew that! Throw Salesi onto Tiatia's wing and Ope in at 12. Taione still the best pick of the hookers there.

  • @Bones I think for a while now but more as a bench option.

    Article below mentions him.

    http://www.clubrugby.co.nz/wellington/story.php?id=914

  • @Canes4life I reckon if you went back pre-amalgamation, you could probably swap in a few old-timers from Titahi Bay or Porirua rugby club too.

  • @Canes4life hmmm...was that "the" Brian Lima? At 42 years old?

  • @Bones maybe a son? Will try and investigate further.

  • @Wally

Actually should replace Philpott( I know not a SF favourite but was a genuine hard man club lock in the 90s) with Johnny Gray Scotland.

  • @Canes4life said in Pick your clubs all time team.:

    @Daffy-Jaffy Petone updated:

    1. Ken Gray / Laurence Hullena

    With a straight face?

  • Technically, Petone could also call upon Purvis.

  • Wellington Axemen Top XV - This has had a bit of thought put into it but once again without any outside references for help could well be subject to change a bit later. • @Nepia He is always injured and has only laced up his boots a couple of times for The Texans so cannot really be selected on his schoolboy rating and such limited performances at senior level. Was given consideration nonetheless.
