Reds v Waratahs

A very green looking Tahs team for Friday night.
Waratahs (1-15): Angus Bell, Robbie Abel, Harry Johnson-Holmes, Ned Hanigan, Rob Simmons, Lachlan Swinton, Michael Hooper, Will Harris, Mitch Short, Will Harrison, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Joey Walton, Alex Newsome, James Ramm, Jack Maddocks. Bench: Tom Horton, Tetera Faulkner, Tiaan Tauakipulu, Tom Staniforth, Jack Dempsey, Michael McDonald, Ben Donaldson, Tepai Moeroa.

I split this off into the rugby matches area
Not sure how much interest there will be in the Aus competition.. might as well have match threads for now
-
Wallabies World Cup squad member Jack Dempsey has been dropped to the Waratahs bench for Friday’s clash with the Queensland Reds and will be replaced at No.8 by rising star Will Harris in an extremely youthful side. NSW could field five debutants in the opening round of Super Rugby AU, with Harris and centre Joey Walton given the nod in the starting XV
Anyone know much about the new players?
-
is this going ahead? I thought they all went on strike?
-
@mariner4life from an article last week
Players had been united behind the idea of boycotting the Super Rugby AU tournament, starting July 3, on Wednesday, however it seems cooler heads have prevailed and they will take the field next weekend. However, the caveat will be that some stars ask RA to release them from their contracts on September 30 so they can take up more lucrative offers overseas.

fuck off we're full!!
-
Tiaan Tauakipulu was the starting TH prop for the NZ Schools team last year. Played for St Kents.
-
Will Harris coming in at 8, he's only 20 and is one to watch. Will Harrison at 10 is still the focal point, very young and is being thrown in the deep end massively without Gordon, Hunt and Beale.
Reds should win by 15+, but the real winner will be the Australian rugby public who finally have a local fkn GAME to watch.

-
By the way, in case you've missed it, in SR AU they have more law trials than we have in SRA.
They're in this article:
-
Ahh cool, more rugby to watch! This is being broadcast on sky UK too.
-

I don't know what the rules are for crowds at games in Australia, but it's good to see real people in the stands instead of cardboard cutouts.
The game isn't too bad. It's like watching two development teams play with all those young players (and the odd 23+ player).
-
Haha, and a bit of shoulder from Paisami.
-
Push over or penalty try coming..
-
I think I've already seen more scrum-resets in this game than in the first three rounds of SRA.
-
Reds scrum dominant.
-
What the fuck was that by McDermott? He's run straight into the line of a tackler much bigger than him, why not veer away? Weird.
-
HT: Reds 19 - 13 Tahs
-
Reds should be further in front. Tahs need to stop attempting every offload
-
Great try from Maddocks.
-
Which player were they talking about when the commentator said that NZ "poached" a player from Australia? (He played for NZ Schools)
-
@KiwiMurph that inexperience showed in the last 10 minutes. Not a bad game and a good win for the Reds who haven’t beaten the Tahs in ages I don’t think
-
FT: Reds 32 - 26 Waratahs
Lots of rust and rookie mistakes, and the Aussie hookers also seem to have problems throwing in the line-out, but a reasonably entertaining game. Good to see rugby being played again in Oz, too.
-
Swinton and McDermott were both really impressive. Australia have a lot of quality youngsters coming through.
-
@Stargazer did Tupou play for NZ schools while at Sacred Heart?

Something about a bloke called Tiann? Was at school in QLD before playing for NZ schools then coming back
-
@Bones No, I don't think he played for NZ Schools.
Edit: see this article from the Courier Mail.
-
@Stargazer @Bones I’m pretty sure the NZ schoolboys player that was mentioned tonight was the Tiaan Tauakipulu.
-
@NTA @ACT-Crusader Yes, it was Tiaan Tauakipulu.
Definitely not a poach, because he was born in Auckland (according to his own Facebook page). He must have moved to Brisbane at some point and then gone back to Auckland to attend St Kent's. He played for NZ Schools in 2018 and 2019.
-
@Bones yeah that was a strange one. Other than that I thought he played pretty well.
-
@ACT-Crusader yeah, you see it often from someone big and fast who can brush off the tackle, but he's tiny and was only 10m away, could just have swerved towards the sideline. Bizarre!
-
@Bones No he wasn't elligible due to not having a NZ passport IIRC.

As I mentioned previously, Tiaan's brother Keynan was in the Aust Schools team last year, having attended St Kents himself. Aust has re-poached them.

Shit crowd turn out...
-
@Machpants Can't work out whether your comment is serious or not.
You've heard of COVID-19, I assume?
-
@Stargazer thus the ...
JOC looked good, pretty messy game, but close enough to be interesting
-
Haha, good stuff:
"Again, it’s low hanging fruit. But Kearns is horrific. Sounds sad, boring and heaps whiny. Like a vegan at a BBQ."
"Kearns actually just sounds like a fan who's a 5 beers deep making one-eyed offhand comments to his mate beside him"
"Kearns doing his best to lower the price for Fox."
"Phil Kearns is a lot like Covid. There's no vaccine to cure it, and for now, we just hope he goes away. "

Jeez I my joke wasn;t far off " In contrast, 20,000 fans were permitted to attend Suncorp Stadium for the Reds-Waratahs game, but only 5,600 turned up."
