Not sure what else to call this or even if it’s worthy of its own thread... but work is quiet so I thought why the fuck not.
Not sure I mentioned this earlier but I recused 3 kittens from the skip bin out front of work a few weeks ago.. oh wait I did?!?.. well anyway they are doing great, one has a new home and we are keeping the other 2.
Slight issue, we already have 2 dogs who have grown up only seeing cats as annoying animals that tease them from the neighbours fence. Anyway long story not so long, we attempted to bond them lastnight.
Didn’t go that well, end result is the Mrs was scratched up badly and the 55inch tv in the lounge is caput.
The wife tried to shoe one of the dogs away with water but inadvertently got water into the tv, unknown to us. Few mins later the picture changed to vertical lines and then nothing.
Anyway it’s probably fucked and I thought great, due to get a new tv anyway, one packed full of flashy bits and coop stuff. But then it’s kinda hit me we don’t watch a lot of tv in the lounge. We have another tv in the bedroom. It’s the only one that is connected to Netflix, Disney + etc
The kids use it or they are glue to the line iPad in the house or the Mac.
So I’m thinking do we need to shell out $1500- $2500 on something that only gets used an hour or so every night?
We ditched sky earlier in the year, don’t miss it. I don’t watch as much sport as I used to ( strange thing to admit too in a sports forum)

Anyone else come to the realisation their habits or lifestyle can just change?
I should point out I’m not turning into one of those insufferable pricks who proudly state they don’t have a tv or device in their house, fuck that. I couldn’t imagine life without a phone or pc/Mac.
New tvs do look cool but do I really need one?...

fuck i bet that was a funny fucking sight

the only thing i would say is, having the boys over for the game is going to be very weird when you get them all in to the master bedroom and sitting on the workbench

The Mrs was in tears at the end, after initially saying out loud a couple times the tv is fucked I proceed to bite my tongue and say nothing.

Yeah that’s a thing too, how are you supposed to impress friends and family with the biggest coolest flat thing if you don’t have one

I assume you can get a decent enough tv for an hour a night without having to shell out $1500-$2500 - if you don't care about brand name. I had an expensive Sony that shat itself and I replaced it with a "temporary" Hisense - and it's been the best TV I've ever owned. It's faster than the Sony at turning on/loading apps etc and the picture and sound are fine (caveat: I'm not a sound guy so that's probably personal preference.

Yeah could get a cheapie from the warehouse or something I guess. But then your throwing away a few hundred $$$ that could go towards plastic surgery or a work bench according to @mariner4life

Not old 6 or 7 years, did think about going through insurance but the rigmarole. Will need to take it away to get assessed bunch of phone calls. Then the access to pay if it goes ahead.. or someone will talk Tower into saying they can fix it and we are out of pocket for a temporary fix.

Probably should go through that but now I can’t stop thinking about boobs

@Virgil at that age, it will probably wont be replacement anyway (cant recall if Tower have the always replacement option) so likely not get alot...electronics get depreciated pretty quickly after the 'standard' 3 years replacement cover ends

What would they do? Decline the claim?

@Virgil no, but lets say your TV cost you $2,000, and is say 6 years old, at a guess, they may depreciate (compounded) it 20% every year, which would end $655 before deduction of your excess, and then there is potential loss of No claims to consider too.

Maybe have a look at the policy, it should tell you if it is blanket replacement or not

I went for a life change this year. Moved to Bali, didn't watch TV for 3 months, read heaps of books, drank heaps less, ate really healthy, started learning how to surf

Then Covid hit and the old lady got worse, and I've been stuck in NZ drinking heaps, eating massive meals, and watching heaps more TV, with no sign of any resolution on the horizon.

Some things are just meant to be.

So buy the new TV bro, a fucking big one with all the bells and whistles. You'll never look back

@Bones Thank you. How you do that to a kitten is beyond me, but I didn't have time earlier to ask.

Rather than buying a new tv, you could just buy a large screen and plug your phone or laptop into it to stream content. That's how my writing desk is set up. I haven't had a tv for about 12 years or so, never miss it because I watch everything online or on my phone.

@Virgil or just buy a cheap and cheerful TV, and wing it for a while.

                                            Man, screen prices have plummetted.

Due to being away for work a fair bit or visiting the other half I've become extremely accustomed to watching stuff on the laptop. There's still obviously a lot to be said for going somewhere to watch a game of some sort but but my TV goes days and days without use sometimes.

You’ll be blown away, tv is in Color now..

Great idea and single childless me ( somewhere in an alternate universe that version of me exists) would go for that.

I still can’t make up my mind, I’ve decided to follow terrible advice and make an insurance claim.

New tvs do look cool but do I really need one?...

wow, that was a roller coaster of a read!

full credit for saving the kittens, boggles the mind how someone could do that

out of the box idea, get a small projector, bring it out when you want to watch some sport or a movie but pack it up otherwise, just cast stuff from you phone

Rather than buying a new tv, you could just buy a large screen and plug your phone or laptop into it to stream content. That's how my writing desk is set up. I haven't had a tv for about 12 years or so, never miss it because I watch everything online or on my phone.
