Blues v Chiefs

  • @Machpants @African-Monkey interesting- watching live it looked marginal as anything. Can't comment on the replay, but most fo the people around us were spewing

  • The Chiefs should've gone to a setpiece with Plummer in the bin, instead Cane calls for a tap.🤦♂

  • @nzzp yeah it was clear as daylight and actually a really good call.

He made it pretty clear he didn't trust his tight forwards eh.

  • Both Slater and Eklund played well. Both look set to play a lot of games for their franchises and must bge on the AB selectors radars.

Centre field 10 metres out is a hard kick for touch. Lots of risk. Scrum was possibly a lottery so they tried to take the ref out of the game. He found another way in.
I have no issue with the tap.

  • @sparky with Coles and to a lesser extent Taylor getting on it's good to see. Not so good to see Taukeiaho and Makalio dropping off though.

  • Just one more from me about Baby face Pickerell ( decides that makes him sound like the criminal he is)

I expect to not see him officiate next week. If he gets another game then the ref assessors should be sacked. Big screwups two weeks in a row should mean go to jail, do not pass go!

  • @Crucial he had two senior refs on the sdieslines too, trying to help.

Weber looks nervously over his shoulder

I think we can all agree that the NZ refs are crap. Williams the best of a very average group.

You reckon the Sky producer was a Blues fan too? Interesting what replays weren't shown. 😉

  • The Chiefs scrum went to shit when Thomson went into lock. I think there was an opportunity to go right at the end. Only a try was needed.

Remind me who is the referee manager these days?

There's basically no replays this season. Irritating for anoraks, but good for the game I think- not poring over every call and lambasting the ref

  • @nzzp There are more replays on TV than at the ground.

I'm fucked off NZR haven't activated Sports Ears for SRA because I like to know what the penalties are for and to hear the communication between the ref and ARs.

  • @Bovidae said in Blues v Chiefs:

Are there? The lack of replays in rugby coverage is one of the biggest first world bugbears for me at the moment.

  • @Nepia And when are going to get 50 or 60 frames per second coverage!

  • @Bovidae I will continue to be bewildered how a 38yo lock from well out of the franchise and whose best years are way, waaaaaaay behind him, got a Chiefs contract.

  • @Tim said in Blues v Chiefs:

@Nepia And when are going to get 50 or 60 frames per second coverage!

That would be nice. Although, for 2 weekends I was watching rugby at 720p because Kayo reset itself to "HD", I saw the setting and just assumed HD would include 1080p, but nope, you have to set "auto" to get 1080.

  • The Blues are no longer the easy beats of the NZ franchises.
They have developed a close team comradeship that puts the defence of their line a top priority. They fight for each other, and results are forthcoming. No way are they the complete deal yet ,but boy do they fight.,and from time to time thrill us with class tries.Enjoy it Blues fans,I am.

Yes. The big screens are used for entertainment purposes as much as replays at the ground, at least in SRA at the moment. Maybe it's all part of cost-cutting by Sky and NZR, although the former flies a dozen "experts" to games each week.

I think my point is there's barely any replays now on the TV coverage, so that would basically equate to none ever at the ground.

  • @Mokey The Chiefs are scraping the bottom of the barrel for locks. The problem is that Thomson has never been a lock.

Hopefully Ah Kuoi is back next week.

  • Still no idea what BP pulled out of his arse at the end there, but goddamn I'll take it. Was reflecting on the game last year or the year before in Hamilton, where we won 4-5 scrum penalties on teh bounce with no card or other sanction. Referee bottled it there too, but we just weren't good enough to do anything with it.

Despite having the possession and territory, the Chiefs couldn't get it done- so while the call at the end was poor, it wasn't the game

  • @trodthesod Well said. Defence is an attitude thing and we are showing plenty of grit in that area. As you said, there's loads of fight in this side but plenty to improve on.

It’s a big positive for me, we have plenty to improve on but because the defence and set pieces are working so well we are still winning close games.

They attack has not clicked at all except for the odd moment.

    Newshub say:
They seemed to have achieved that in the dying moments, when No.8 Pita Gus Sowakula dove for the line, but was ruled to have knocked on and the Blues won a clearing penalty.

  • @nzzp Looked like a knock on on the replay, and he looked to try to go again from the deck.

Well that’s the end of the complaints then, doesn’t matter what’s happened after the knock on.

    Good defence.

  • @Kirwan A lot of it because of our own undoing with our poor discipline on attack. We do look good when we are on attack, but ruin it with that on annoying word - discipline!

  • @African-Monkey said in Blues v Chiefs:

We seemed to get pinged a lot for side entry and losing our feet. Even on attack.

Ignoring other teams being able to get away with that, just clearing those two things up to take the ref out of the game would allow us to build more pressure.

100%. Breakdown discipline is easily fixed too - I'm hopeful for next year. It's been our achilles heel all season - getting into good positions and then either conceding a penalty, or doing something stupid.

  • i can live with the call at the end sometimes calls go your way, other days you dont get them. lot easier to take than last week where TMO didnt know the rules, this week we just weren't good enough.

  • @Kirwan Definitely, and we'd be putting sides ike the Chiefs away with ease IF we could make these small adjustments, but hey, why am I moaning, we've literally won more local derbies this year then we have in the last 5 years!

  • @African-Monkey thing is we could say same things. DMac throws good pass, find touch ,QT catches the ball etc and its a good win

  • @ploughboy Yup fair. I still stand by what I say though haha.

  • As irritated as Chiefs supporters may be by the final penalty, the first try was a disgraceful abrogation of Pickerill's application of the laws.

    alt text

All players not participating at the scrum remain at least five metres behind the hindmost foot of their team.

That looked so obvious to me when watching the game.

It was obvious but had no effect - if a defender was taken out, I would have more sympathy, but he went so early and got his timing so wrong that it literally had zero impact.

  • That’s five in a row for the Blues at Eden Park.
