Word is 2700 tones of ammonia nitrate seized years ago was left unchecked on the docks.
Conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day

ammonia nitrate
That's the fertiliser used in making bombs isn't it?
I'm not going to google as I will end up on another watch list.

The main ingredient in the Oklahoma bombing

No doubt this thread is now being watched.
Sorry @Snowy but one threatening phone call and I’ll roll over so quick, you might want to start filling in your cellar.

I don't have your number unfortunately. I do know roughly where you live though. Will pop around later and "realign" your priorities about who is more dangerous.
On topic - it looks like 73 dead and 3700 injured. That is quite some blast.

God 2020 is a muthaf*****
This is so sad. I got goosebumps seeing the size of that explosion. 😔

That shockwave though!!!
Shit, that was almost Hiroshima like. Obviously on a much tinier scale, but it was still pretty damn big and to captured on the ground in close proximity like that, scary
-
Having made and discharged ANFO bombs, though not of that size, that's awesome to watch. Quite why you'd leave near three tonnes of the stuff in a port is enormously negligent.
-
Yeah that's a big blast. Reading around it, 80% of all the wheat used in the country comes through that port. Beirut totally reliant on it, so food shortages are next 🤕

@antipodean Fucking Jesus, I'm not a religious person but prayers go out to those people
-
that shockwave makes my only real frame of reference for such thing, movies, look stupid, thats unbelievable
amazing just forgetting about something like that and leaving it sitting around could have such a result
anyone with more knowledge, this is just from it sitting around for a long time...degrading in some way?
-
@antipodean I have no idea how it's not thousands dead. It just disintegrates that building. I wish there was footage of CCTV as they don't chicken out and turn their back and drop phone....
-
@antipodean FUCK!

Something tells me storing that stuff like that was not OSH approved
-
I'd hazard the only saving grace is if the port wasn't busy and is reasonably isolated. I don't know Beirut well enough to say. But given my limited experience with ANFO, the results once they can get in will be devastating.

It's an oxidising agent. It doesn't degrade as such, but if subjected to large shock or a fire can explode. It'll sit around quite happily until you provide an ignition source. Given its properties, you'd never store that much together in one place.
-
There is another vid on facebook circulating that is the best so far in terms of showing the impact of the blast. They are high up and much further away!
Alas, I have no idea how to post it on here. If someone that is on my facebook knows how to, I will tag them in.
It's spectacular

-
@Tim i was gong to say it looked like fireworks but thought that might have just been how that stuff reacted
-
@Hooroo is easier on desktop than phone, tag me and I'll do it

Holy fuck

-
@Virgil cant word it better than that
seeing it rip through the adjacent buildings!
-
jesus h christ that is insane footage
is it in profile though?
(i know i know)
-
Hopefully the original fire wasn't burning long enough for fire and ambulance crews to turn up. If they knew of the ammonium nitrate, the best they could do is simply wait a good distance back.
-
a couple more angles here
-
I am reassessing my opinion on my dangerous goods courses.
